Bullshit.
My point is...Dilla had a huge influence on Tribes sound. Tip is on record with that.
This was the Sundance cut, and they might have added more footage since then.
It comes out in theaters this July.

Dilla did the worst tribe album ever (beats, rhymes, and life)
They met on the MM tour. Tip put Dilla on.
After that he had an influence on everything Tip did from THEN.
WHich basically includes his solo stuff, and production work on other things.
So Tip influenced Dilla way before that.
Great documentary on one of the greatest and most influential groups of all-time.
Back in middle school/high school, Tribe was my favorite rap group hands-down. From the time that I heard "Left My Wallet..." and "Bonita Applebaum," I was a fan. Then when they dropped "Check the Rhime" & "We Got the Jazz" I went crazy!!! Just straight Fie!! Watching this documentary brought back a lot of memories from back in the early-mid nineties.
Low End Theory & Midnight Marauders were the soundtracks of my life at that time. Midnight Marauders is my favorite Tribe album and one of my favorites of all-time. On that album Tribe came full-circle. It felt like a more complete album (On a sidenote: Outkast would later do the same thing on their 3rd release "Aquemini")
I loved Tribe because I could relate to them moreso than the rest of the Native Tongues. Don't get me wrong, I was a huge fan of their click but Tribe were the ones that really stood out to me. Tribe wasn't too weird like De La nor were they extremely Black conscious like the JBs. They were right there in the middle. Not too mention they still had that street cred (without being macho and gangsta) to go along with it.
Honestly, when Tribe called it quits back in 98, I was relieved because after Midnight Marauders, their music went downhill bigtime. I hated the hell out of the Beats & Rhymes album. I still don't like it. I love Dilla but adding him to help produce didnt help at all. The Love Movement was a decent but it seemed forced.
Didn't know Q-Tip produced the first three albums. I thought him & Ali produced those joints even though the credits read "Produced by ATCQ." Man, Q-Tip really is a genius!! He could've easily took all of the credit but he didn't. Like he said in the documentary, "its all about the unit!!"
I really would like to see a documantary on the making of "Low End Theory" & "Midnight Marauders." That would be very interesting. Someone stated that they would like to see a "Native Tongue" documentary. Thats a good idea. After seeing this documentary, next up: a documentary on De La.
the best thing about this movie was q-tip reminding me that i need this cold ass minnie riperton cut on my ipod ASAP!... this song was before my time, but this is some mellow ass player shit right here bro....& you can hear the ATCQ "lyrics to go" sample at the 3:09 to 3:18 mark

The Love Movement was the worst album by far
The fire in Tip's crib had a lot to do with their downfall... Tip lost A LOT OF BREAKS in that fire... Shit that really couldn't be replaced... after that, it was like he STOPPED making beats... I mean, even now, why haven't we heard Tip produced record?? that is sad if you ask me... The homie even now is stll one of the BEST producers to ever do it... Too bad he stopped producing...![]()
Beats, Rhymes you can see the division in the group and the quality went down. They still had some gems though.
Actually man, I never was in to Dilla like a lot of other underground heads, because I was always blamed him for Tribe going down.
That's why I can see the De La is better than Tribe argument, because they remained consistent and put out quality music. BR&L was spotty, and the only thing that saved The Love Movement for me was having a good copy of Scenario Remix on the bonus disk...because honestly that's the worst album I've ever heard by rappers I loved. Every two years I'll pull The Love Movement out to see if it really is that bad, and it has me going like a spades game, I'll try to squeeze out...one and a possible.
You're losing me fam. The Ummah was Q-Tip, Jay-Dee, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed. No one else. Those other folks you named were members of the Soulquarians. I don't know what else to tell you.
No, I didn't google because I don't have to.
Edit: I googled just for you...
"The Ummah was a music production collective, composed of members Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, and the late Jay Dee (now known as J Dilla) of the Detroit-based group Slum Village. Occasional members included Raphael Saadiq, and D'Angelo. In addition to producing nearly the entirety of A Tribe Called Quest's fourth and fifth album, the Ummah provided backing tracks for a notable array of hip hop and contemporary R&B artists, including Busta Rhymes, Whitney Houston, Keith Murray, the Brand New Heavies, Janet Jackson, and Jon B. The group was so named because two of its members (Tip and Ali) are devout Muslims. The word "ummah" is Arabic for "community", "nation", or "brotherhood"."
Leave em alone fam...You are absolutely right tuckdog This is the most elementary shit real questers don't need wiki the ummah![]()
I get the impression you have many good stories to tell. Is it Vandamark?
I'm sorry but Beats Rhymes Life was their worst album. I still hate that damn album!!!I bought it when it first dropped. It was a special edition copy that had a hologram/moving cover....still have it...that shyt looked cool as hell.
Anyway, I was so excited because their 1st single "1nce Again" was hot plus Tribe hadn't released an album in 3 years. Popped that shyt in the CD player (oh yeah, this was one of my first cds) and boy was I dissappointed!!! Album was straight garbage.
I think its amazing how De La Soul has stayed together for over 20 years and still put out hot shyt. I swear, someone needs to get crackin' on a De La documentary ASAP! I remember seeing them perform at the Spit Kicker concert back in 2000 and the kids their didn't know any of their music except for "Oooh" feat. Redman because it was on the radio at the timeThose dudes are highly under-rated.
The fucked up part about all this though,is TCQ still has one album left on their record deal. I wonder what it would sound like in this times if they ever released it. If Phife and Qtip were getting along they could've released it a long time ago, i bet shit like this is what has Qtip pissed off.
I can't wait for Dela soul's documentary, that shit has to be good![]()
