Just finished watching the ATCQ Documentary....

like i said in the movie forum...... all phife had to do was take care of himself, show up on time and shut up..... that whole "im not talking to you right now" 5 minutes before showtime was some attention whore little girl bs....

not to diminish what the effects of diabetes can cause but it really can be managed...with healthy living and he admitted to sugar binges and shyt... he would front and say he was ok, and then get mad when he wasn't babied...

only part i didnt like was at the end when he asked if it was wierd performing without phife and he was like no :hmm:....

wish they would have went into some more of the native tongue and LONS stuff, especially with queen latifah and monie...

I look at it like this. Sometimes you're upset and you just want some time alone and you don't want to talk about it. Plus the discussion q-Tip wanted to have wasn't one they should have had 5 minutes before a show.

And the show up and shut up shit. These are grown ass men. Jarobi hinted how Q-Tip was, and even Q-Tip said he was a drill sargent/gym teacher or whatever.

only part i didnt like was at the end when he asked if it was wierd performing without phife and he was like no :hmm:....

That was fucked up, but you could kind of tell he was lying

What he said in concert was fucked up also though.

great documentary
real inspiring musically.
both of them are sensitive phife and q-tip. q-tip took less credit than he deserved on the production and getting the group together type of thing.
and phife was being reckless with his life.
ali was just quiet and played the background, seems like that's how he is, he loves it and is happy to be there.
q-tip said that he was very in their face about shit, and he also said that if he knew he was taking it like that he would have approached it different.
all phife had to do is just say yo i don't like how you're coming at me and be done with it. to me it seemed like instead of responding like that he escalated it because he was taking shit some kind of way.
both were wrong

I was always a bigger fan of Phife...especially after "Butter" dropped. But he really came off like a bitch in this. I gotta give Q-tip alot of credit. Successful groups need a hard-charging personality like his.

Good watch.

The documentary was good but one thing, what did Ali Shaheed do?
Tip pretty much told us what we knew already which is that he did all the beats himself so what purpose did Shaheed serve?

Watched this last week Friday. Pretty good documentary, and sad at the same time.

Q-Tip as it has been said took less credit for a lot of the shit (production) he did.

The way I see it, Phife was on some emotional shit. All he had to do was show up, and do his part. Even with his health condition, the others were trying to look out for him to get him to do right, work out, eat healthy, but he took it the wrong way.

All in all. I still love ATCQ till death, and I am happy that at least Q-Tip is still active musically dropping gems here and there.

I guess Shaheed was the DJ of the group, but otherwise brother was along for the ride

i think shaheed did a little more than he's willing to say or portray. he just seems like a background laid back kind of dude. his was the only even personality on the whole thing which is why they didn't focus much on him. he was the dj but he has talent production wise and everything as well so he probably had some input on the way the music sounded. not saying he was the architect but just judging by how he was during the whole thing even if he had done everything by himself he still wouldn't have said anything at all..

those two arguing and cussing and shit
and he's like "i gotta go start the show"

even phife's wife expressed as much when she was saying she felt sorry for him cause he's in the middle. im sure they were talking bad about each other to him directly and he's gotta sit there and take on both sides

but like i said he seemed genuinely happy to be a part of the group.

what exactly did he say? I couldn't catch it [only watched it once so far]

he's referring to him pointing him out at the concert but i didn't really see anything bad about it. phife was saying he was feeling bad and everything and that he had to lean on jarobi to get rhymes out then tip puts him on center stage and that upset him.
to me i don't really know what tip was supposed to do.. if that was his part in the song to rap then should he have rapped it for him? then he would have said he's trying to control my verses that i wrote! and shit like that. phife is limited so tip is bouncing around to give them a show he aint looking at phife he's out there to give em a show and the whole reason they're on tour in the 1st place is because phife needed money for his treatment.. could have easily said nah. .

Yup, I also think he had influences on the overall production. When I was younger, I thought he was the main producer. What Phife's wife said was so true, and I felt sorry for Shaheed :smh: it is no fun having to be the middle man dealing with two egos.

The two assholes fighting seconds before a show, and he could have easily flipped his wig too and caused even more of a ruckus, but he was the responsible one getting the show off the ground.

I wish em all the best

Yeah, Phife was tripping on that part. The show is going on, Q-Tip is hype, and most likely did not even notice Phife struggling.

I understand it could be frustrating being sick with a medical condition, but you should not hold that as a "clutch" to defend your actions.

Talking shit through could have avoided a lot of the head butting between Tip and Phife.

which is why believe it or not i always rocked with shaheed the most. he's kind of like me it seems in disposition. all this chaos and random arguments and shit and he's just like ok ima start the show and hope these dudes work it out. if he wasn't there to listen to all that bullshit i don't think that tribe would have survived 1 album never mind as many as they did.
dude was the glue to me.

I thought it was great. Got me more excited about Hip Hop than any album released in the last 7 or 8 years. I would like to see a Native Tongues documentary. I always wondered if there was a reason why none of them ever showed on any ATCQ albums and why Pos got at the Jungle Brothers on Breakadawn

i mean the whole reason they're on tour is for him. so how can he say that he doesn't care about phife. i honestly believe tip when he said he never had a problem with phife. phife had a problem with how shit went down with tip but he just didn't know how to properly express himself and say it better. he acted out and shit which no man is going to take and there's the rift.

he could have easily said next time man look at me my shit was weak out there im struggling just don't do that next time... instead he's like OH ITS OVER ITS A WRAP YOU'RE DONE YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT ME AND NOW IM NOT GONNA TALK TO YOU
you see tip didn't even think he did anything wrong if he's asking him wassup and why aren't you talking to me? and phife is just pouting... then going off and shit..
and of course shaheed is like :confused::confused::confused::smh::smh: ima go start the show

:lol::lol:

He SNATCHED Away from her holding his arm like GTF up Off of Me, FUCK THEM & THAT SAME OLD BS! edited right after he was saying something to the extent of "If Someone's talking that shit, we gotta go see.....":lol:

Even tempered but aint no punk on some REAL BS which apparently that was not/is not/never was since day one from them two 'brother' type of kats who go back to preschool. Family fighting while close friends & associates can't do much of shit but let the shit play out.

THATS The impression I got & took from it as he's seemed to move on from back when they may have 1st been doing that lil playout called the Tip&Phife show unbeknown to most of us.

Phife's Wife & Ali hold all the cards & know the depth of those lil things that hold them back.
Look how quick & relieved Ali was (which resembled the same feeling of relief Dave/TrugoyTheDove showed on camera) to find out that the 'decision' not to go on tour & finish their obligations to the label?

Even when Jarobi supported Phife's claim that it wasn't done right, u didnt see Ali beefing or even mentioning the particulars.
By how he said it, it was exactly how Tip presented it but inside it spelled RELIEF for him {"Whew!!!"}

Look what Ali said about taking that magic & energy, applying it to another group or even somewhat of a fruitful career for himself in moving on from 15-20 yrs of bickering.

Look how laid back with little to say when Maceo & tip were talking right after their lil tiff.

Look how he doesnt give a fuck if they do or dont perform together which somewhat supports why Tip said he doesnt mind not performing with Phife.
{I also think what he said on stage to Phife while he was silently struggling after dialysis was taken out of context as he was saying the words, giving 200% energy & expected, as he ALWAYS DID the MOST from his lil Man who DIDNT Tell Him How low on energy he happenned to be feeling @ the time - was he supposed to be STUDYING his man & his temperment who told him he was aiight or studying the frenzy he created with that audience @ that moment?
Y'all DID SEE How they switched up the words to the song @ the end to fit his man's current condition & state of mind right once he KNOW how it may have affected him?}

He may have given him a lil knudge but wasnt a throw under no fucking bus & neither was what he said in the interview;
Phife should fucking KNOW BETTER after all the yrs in the grimey "BUSINESS"/industry that the bitch ass reporter may have left out a word or 4 & taken the shit up out of context just to make more out of what they were receiving :smh: like that shit doesnt happen every day for yrs esp with group dynamics.

In a sense on Beats, Rhymes & Life, Tip already transfered his passions of & for the group to other players to keeep his Tribe 'moving.' The original chemistry was shifting but the feel, focus & drive of that Tribe music still remained; I enjoyed that album for @ least that much.

Anyone who knows & remembers sees how Conseq got on a few of them tracks, bringing his hood edge sprinkled by the dynamic contributions of JDilla.
The Tribe had to keep PushingAlong.

exactly what i took from it
phife needs to learn how to express himself and also take the blame for his condition. the parts that he played in it.
talk to someone with respect and tip was always there to change it up or do it. i mean like i said the only reason they were on tour was because of him and solely him.

tip and phife were the stars but from the documentary you can clearly see shaheed was the glue

i see

Another medical condition Phife suffered from: Short Man Complex :smh:

napoleon for sure
you see it in how he remembers shit how he acts about shit how he rhymed. he resents that people gravitate towards tip.
its not tips fault though, like tip said he put a tribe on the credits if he was as bad as phife is making him out to be all that shit could have easily just said his name.. but it didn't.

he wanted to be the man but it wasn't meant for him to be the man. he was a man in his own right and should have just felt the love and kept it there. you don't think people were in tips ear saying he should just go solo... from like album 1?

Word
The documentary allowed them to share a piece of themselves with the audience, foilbles included, which can be a double edged sword @ times for some.

Tip has a sense of how certain artistic kats can be portrayed, misunderstood ontop of being assholes but seemed very careful to try not to be judged on that, if he could help it in THIS presentation by what he said & how he carried himself.

he's referring to him pointing him out at the concert but I didn't really see anything bad about it. Phife was saying he was feeling bad and everything and that he had to lean on jarobi to get rhymes out then tip puts him on center stage and that upset him.

& For the record what Tip said on stage @ almost the 73rd min in the screener was
"LOOK ALIVE, LOOK @ PHIFE DAWG" as an adlib between

Q-Tip:
Messing me up, my whole head
Teasing me, just like Tisha, did Martin
Now look at what you're starting
Schoolboy's crush and it ain't on the hush
The whole world sees it but you can't (uh)
My peoples they complain, sit and rave and rant (come on)
Your name is out my mouth like an ancient chant (say what?)
Got me like a dog as I pause and pant...

&
Phife:
Speaking of which, got a leash and I wish just to rock you miss (come on)
Make a militant move, peep my strategy (what?)
End of the day you're not mad at me (uh)
Not dealing with nobody, now that's what you told me (what?)

on

:hmm::rolleyes::lol:

Now it could be innocent like Check my Man, He's about to get busy
or
Pause & Pant like Phife is doing right now :hmm: A reach but who knows
or
We Alive, Phife's Alive, we're doing it
Or
We're alive, YOU AINT WTF Man, CMON:angry:
:dunno:

I choose not to have a choice as I wasnt there & don't really give a fuck - only those two men know exactly what it was & wasnt.

When he went in on the "QTip AND the TribeCalledQuest thing, for all we know, he could have been having an age old bitch fit about him not getting enough imput {i.e. on SoUThinkUCanDance, this young early 20s kid from up out Cali somewhere had a mini bitchfit in a group exhibition where they had about 5 hrs overnight to get shit ready;
they all have diff styles & his is more unique with alot of freestyles & the latest street inspired dances done intermingled in his presentations;
NOBODY Knows that type of shit nor could have it mastered in a short pd of time but him but he was  & in tears because they wouldn't grant HIS STYLE with @ least an 8 count into their show - the frustration is understandable, but the logic & maturity was obviously lacking which the judges, his peers & the world got a chance to see; am almost sure that that's one of the factors that got his ass sent home amongst some others}.

Now have seen that type of shit happen b4but not played out in a doc. All this comes down to how HE handles shit as a man but apparently he didnt & we had to witness the shit on the screen :smh: I see why & how Tip got so TIGHT @ Phife, ready to go upside his head for that bitch shit ("He hit me":hmm) but love is love.

By the end, u can see that they worked that shit out by changing the verse to fit his man's current situation & fragile ego when, more than anyone else, he did that to himself.
Ahh, the fun opf maintaining a group:hmm:

Sounds like all the issues Phife and Tip had could've been sat down and talked about but their egos prevented that from happening. Good documentary though

Pete DID do "the Jazz" beat... TIP had that record and re-created it... The truth is... Pete... TIP... Large Professor... JUJU from the Beatnuts... Mr. Walt from BeatMinerz... Diamond D... all these dudes FUCKED with each other during a certain period time... They ALL went Record Shoppiing together and Shit like that...

TIP, PETE and LARGE were VERY TIGHT... but... They all did their OWN beats... In fact, Large helped TIP put together his FIRST pre-production set up... but TIP put together damn near all those albums C/SIGN

inspired by the documentary, I popped in Midnight Marauders last night. It was a bitter sweet listen after the fact. Saddens me to think of what could be.

I didn't know they had a documentary out, being a HUGE TCQ fan i will never forget the 1st time i listened to Midnight Marauders which imo is still the greatest cd ever. That cd was the 1st one to get the no track skip plus loop option on my cd player:lol::yes:

Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory... two of my favorites of ALL TIME...:yes::yes:

Havent watched the docu yet but...

Me and my boy used to talk during the whole Tribe career about Phife coming off kinda lazy.
I guess we had it right.

I was excited when Tip went solo. Hoping he blew up as a solo artist. And thats not to take away from the group's music at all.

i'm am totally shocked by how irrelevant ali shaheed was ,,, was that dude getting paid by the hour or something?,,, all these years i thought he was the mastermind behind tribes dope ass beats, when it was actually qtip,,, they said almost nothing about him, nor did he have much to say,,,

read what i wrote. i think he did help with the beats and concepts and ideas
look at his personality though, he was the one who kept it together. phife already said when they'd go on tour tip would be looking for records him and jarobi would be out and shaheed would be in the room playing guitar...he wouldn't be doing that for nothing..
i think he helped a lot on the construction of things JUST didn't really care about the credit and didn't really care about anything else but the group. just a quiet dude and if he had done everything he still wouldn't have said anything. he's like the opposite of the rest of them.. both outspoken and he's quietly keeping them together as best he could

nobody had anything negative to say about shaheed...ever

wasn't a big tribe fan... saw it last night and it was cool... too much hype... would have been dope if I just went in without expectations....

must see for music fans... could have been much better tho

This was the Sundance cut, and they might have added more footage since then.

It comes out in theaters this July.

It's also about era

Back in the 80's when they started, the DJ was on the same level as the rapper. Now we look down on DJ's because stage shows are shit, but the DJ was a vital part of a hip hop show. There was no hiring Green Lantern or Big Mike to tour with you.

Great documentary on one of the greatest and most influential groups of all-time.

Back in middle school/high school, Tribe was my favorite rap group hands-down. From the time that I heard "Left My Wallet..." and "Bonita Applebaum," I was a fan. Then when they dropped "Check the Rhime" & "We Got the Jazz" I went crazy!!! Just straight Fie!! Watching this documentary brought back a lot of memories from back in the early-mid nineties.

Low End Theory & Midnight Marauders were the soundtracks of my life at that time. Midnight Marauders is my favorite Tribe album and one of my favorites of all-time. On that album Tribe came full-circle. It felt like a more complete album (On a sidenote: Outkast would later do the same thing on their 3rd release "Aquemini")

I loved Tribe because I could relate to them moreso than the rest of the Native Tongues. Don't get me wrong, I was a huge fan of their click but Tribe were the ones that really stood out to me. Tribe wasn't too weird like De La nor were they extremely Black conscious like the JBs. They were right there in the middle. Not too mention they still had that street cred (without being macho and gangsta) to go along with it.

Honestly, when Tribe called it quits back in 98, I was relieved because after Midnight Marauders, their music went downhill bigtime. I hated the hell out of the Beats & Rhymes album. I still don't like it. I love Dilla but adding him to help produce didnt help at all. The Love Movement was a decent but it seemed forced. :smh:

Didn't know Q-Tip produced the first three albums. I thought him & Ali produced those joints even though the credits read "Produced by ATCQ." Man, Q-Tip really is a genius!! He could've easily took all of the credit but he didn't. Like he said in the documentary, "its all about the unit!!"

I really would like to see a documantary on the making of "Low End Theory" & "Midnight Marauders." That would be very interesting. Someone stated that they would like to see a "Native Tongue" documentary. Thats a good idea. After seeing this documentary, next up: a documentary on De La.
