You ole Joe Rockhead negro. Those were good questions!Y'all keep talking about this "better question" shit but not posing better questions.
Lauryn Hill was one of a kind. Alicia still woYuld've been Alicia and Beyonce still would've been Beyonce. There was room for competitors. Though they weren't in Lauryn's lane. Lauryn was a rapper/singer more so Neo soul then she was pop music though her music was popular.
That being said.....Lauryn probably never would've lived up to Miseducation. That was her "Thriller" album. That was her "Confessions". I think a big part of why she's where she's at right now is because she can't live up to that album to this day.

...And I see you took the time to give your thoughts on them!

What I'm suggesting is that Lauryn brought a couple of unique things into the game. She brought Neo soul into the popular mainstream - some very high quality Neo soul, at that. Talent-wise, she KILLS any of the women mentioned.
In the video age, she brought another rarity, a dark-skinned beauty who was the hottest singer on the scene. This was unheard of and it quite possibly could have opened the door for more of the same. Instead we got stuck with Alicia Keys marginally talented ass - whom in the absence of Lauryn Hill, mainstream media initially tried to play off as the "new face of Neo soul." Lauryn, within the genre of Neo soul had achieved a popularity in very little time that was unheard of for ANY previous artist - her influence on other soul singers is MASSIVE
Lauryn was a rapper/singer but Miseducation was more on the singing side. The term Neo-soul was developed for Erykah Badu by Kedar Massenberg to describe her style of music. Erykah's musical style was strongly influenced by hip-hop artists as was her vagina.
I think the sound and face of R&B music would be a lot different if Lauryn could have capitalized off of Miseducation's momentum.
The only thing that stopped her IMO was a questionable mental state. She always had the raw talent and skill to pull off even greater albumss than Miseducation - provided she had a strong team around her like on Miseducation.
For those who are fans of Lauryn it's comforting to think that she never would have lived up to her first solo album, but I don't believe that to be true.
As an aside, the follow-up album to Thriller was Bad, an album that set a record by yielding 5 number one Billboard Hot 100 singles - something not achieved even by Thriller. And went on to sell 19 million albums in the U.S alone. It's not Thriller but still gigantic.
(personally I feel like Off the Wall was his best solo album)

I don't see it. Aaliyah is like family. She hit the soul. Beyonce is a performer. She coo but that's it.
