If Aaliyah was alive would Beyonce still be BEYONCE?

Y'all keep talking about this "better question" shit but not posing better questions.

Lauryn Hill was one of a kind. Alicia still woYuld've been Alicia and Beyonce still would've been Beyonce. There was room for competitors. Though they weren't in Lauryn's lane. Lauryn was a rapper/singer more so Neo soul then she was pop music though her music was popular.

That being said.....Lauryn probably never would've lived up to Miseducation. That was her "Thriller" album. That was her "Confessions". I think a big part of why she's where she's at right now is because she can't live up to that album to this day.
You ole Joe Rockhead negro. Those were good questions!

...And I see you took the time to give your thoughts on them!

What I'm suggesting is that Lauryn brought a couple of unique things into the game. She brought Neo soul into the popular mainstream - some very high quality Neo soul, at that. Talent-wise, she KILLS any of the women mentioned.

In the video age, she brought another rarity, a dark-skinned beauty who was the hottest singer on the scene. This was unheard of and it quite possibly could have opened the door for more of the same. Instead we got stuck with Alicia Keys marginally talented ass - whom in the absence of Lauryn Hill, mainstream media initially tried to play off as the "new face of Neo soul." Lauryn, within the genre of Neo soul had achieved a popularity in very little time that was unheard of for ANY previous artist - her influence on other soul singers is MASSIVE

Lauryn was a rapper/singer but Miseducation was more on the singing side. The term Neo-soul was developed for Erykah Badu by Kedar Massenberg to describe her style of music. Erykah's musical style was strongly influenced by hip-hop artists as was her vagina.

I think the sound and face of R&B music would be a lot different if Lauryn could have capitalized off of Miseducation's momentum.

The only thing that stopped her IMO was a questionable mental state. She always had the raw talent and skill to pull off even greater albumss than Miseducation - provided she had a strong team around her like on Miseducation.

For those who are fans of Lauryn it's comforting to think that she never would have lived up to her first solo album, but I don't believe that to be true.

As an aside, the follow-up album to Thriller was Bad, an album that set a record by yielding 5 number one Billboard Hot 100 singles - something not achieved even by Thriller. And went on to sell 19 million albums in the U.S alone. It's not Thriller but still gigantic.

(personally I feel like Off the Wall was his best solo album)

Yeah but come on fam.....there was room for other artists. Alicia and Beyonce were in different lanes. Lauryn was always gonna be Lauryn.

And in regards to Bad and Thriller. I prefer Thriller but both are good albums. But there's Thriller that sold 66 million records......and there's everything else. Impact-wise......nothing compares to Thriller. I was bringing it up as that being his peak album.

Who's to say Lauryn wouldn't have two? Jay Z did with Reasonable Doubt and Blueprint. Its rare but its been done. I just think that album with all of the awards it got and all of the album sales it got...was a gift and curse for Lauryn.

I know this is gonna sound crazy, but here it go:

Tamar Braxton was supposed to be Beyonce right now. Toni little sister, had a big budget, as a matter of fact a lot of Beyounce's early solo stuff was a rip off of Tamar Braxton.

Wasn't nobody betting on Beyonce over Ashanti. As a matter of fact I think there is an article out there titled, "Beyonce is no Ashanti":rolleyes2:

Aliyah was dead in the water until Timbo and Missy saved her. She was just at the right place at the right time two times in a row. R Kelly produced her debut album and Timbo and Missy produced the follow up, that's called hitting the lottery twice. She was incredibly limited talentwise.

What Tamar was suppose to be and how big her budget means nothing without the it factor and she doesn't have it (then or now).

Looking back, no. But nobody was rolling out budgets for a beyonce solo budget at the time. Tamar had the beyonce budget and the name rec. i don't think people realize how far Beyonce has come. She was way down on the totem pole.

Really? Tamar Braxton? Maybe it was just me but the first time I saw Destiny's Child I was like "Who the fuck is that?" (speaking about Beyonce), I thought this was the finest chick I ever saw. The others were cool but Beyonce stood out and it couldn't had just been me didn't give a shit how she sound I knew she would be something special lol

So after the survivor album and writing the bootylicous song and being the star in the group she was low on the totem pole? Okay sure buddy.

Thought Beyonce had a nice buzz before the solo album. Besides Destiny Child, she had the collab with Jay (Me and my girlfriend) and the Austin Powers and Fighting Temptation movies.

People talk down on her Pops, but he lined it up perfectly for his daughter to blow up.

Tamar Braxton was the top artist on Dreamworks in 2000. George Micheal was there, but hey....

B didn't go solo until '02, and that was off the strenght of Jay-Z. She had no budget. But I told ya'll it would be hard to believe, so carry on.

I think you are confusing what record executive thought and what the listening audience/fans/purchasers thought. I mean..who the fuck was checking for Tamar (even with her big budget)

With all due respect, Aliyah's career progression/trajectory would have had absolutely no bearing on the Knowles MACHINE!

Carry on!

Beyonce had it since the no no no video
The "IT factor" was instant!

I think the better question, with respect to Ms. Hill, is that if she hadn't gone off the deep end, would female emcees be more prominent than they are now?

Critics generally praised The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill for Hill's presentation of a woman's view on life and love, along with her artistic range. New Ark, however, felt Hill and her record label did not properly credit the group on the album; a lawsuit filed by the group was settled out of court in 2001. Since the record's release, it has been ranked in numerous best-album lists, with a number of critics regarding it as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2015, it was included by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry.

Beyonce filled her void, but musically with DC...she was already climbing with her alive. The solo move was coming & everyone knew it. Aaliyah would've probably moved out of music while Beyonce & Rihanna took over.

She sure would. Beyonce has TALENT. Aaliyah was just cute. (RIP)
Rihanna is the worst. That WORK song sounds as though she got tired
throughout the taping.

Rihanna has sold 100 million more records than Beyoncé. In her husband's own words "Women lie men lie but numbers don't".

Talent doesn't lie either. Ask Evan Rogers, Timbaland, The Dream, (ahem) Jay Z, Stargate, Benny Blanco, Ne-Yo and a host of others who helped create "Rihanna". She's just the Ghost in the Shell. "Let's create another hit for our ghost."
