If Aaliyah was alive would Beyonce still be BEYONCE?

I guess

Ginuwine was already recorded and on the way. It came out a month later. And it's not like Aaliyah came out selling a lot and with a number one album. It was a slow burn.

Pony came out as a smash and did better than any single on the charts and commercially than any Aaliyah song on One In A Million. Once Pony came out, the Timb and Missy run was about to start.

It was the perfect storm. All those talented artists and producers who met and gelled together at the right time .

Aaliyah has become in all due respect, is overrated in death

I'm still shocked she's so much more admired in death than she was while she was alive. Because she was rather boring and she never sold records like Beyonce or Rihanna.

It's odd how Aaliyah has been more revered than Left Eye...who was far more popular and had more charisma and personality

Aaliyah's claim to fame is have underage relations with the pied piper perv

I thought Aaliyah sounded terrible live. Not to mention once Timberland's sound got played she would have to reinvent herself.

When did his sound get played? He was still getting number one songs in 2013 with Beyonce and Justin

He's reinvented himself numerous times.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but who else was using Timberland beats when Justin was using them? What R and B artists were kicking down the door for his stuff?

And I meant she would have to reinvent herself, not him.

Exhibit C: singing skills. Her range may be limited but she could do her thing.

Never heard her live so I can't comment.

He had Jay-Z, Beyonce and Justin

Does anyone else need his beats

Dude can pick and choose when and who he wants to work with at this point.

and he's been trying to get Tink out the past couple of years

Aaliyah wasn't that popular when she was alive

That's kinda true, at least globally.

A better question would jay z be this popular if big and PAC was still here
The answer is no , he would be like nas

Jay dropped an album that was popular before both died. No it didn't go platinum until a few years ago but the point was the rap world saw the talent and were latching on.

How big would Jay be if Big L lived?

Big L wouldn't have had anything to do with Jay's success or lack of success.

Big L wouldn't have had anything to do with Jay's success or lack of success.

You would have to admit thought both B.I.G. and Big L were bigger/more respected in Brooklyn than Jay when they were alive. Not saying they would have had any impact on his success.

Aaliyah was a solo artist while Left Eye was in a group in which she wasn't the lead singer. So of course she'd be more revered. Her bringing Missy and Timbaland into the forefront also helps her legacy.
And yes Beyonce would still be around, relevant and very successful. Brandy was more popular than Aaliyah because she had a sound that was more pop and an image that was more accessible to the masses. Beyonce would fall in line with that.

If vocal range was that much of a factor Rihanna would have been gone years ago.
Rhi rhi has much more vocal range than most people give her credit for with a cutting personality and raw sex appeal that leaves her competitors in the dust.

As for Left Eye, name TLC's hit albums/singles post Lisa Lopes...............she was the glue of the group.

Most who talk about Big L don't really know about Big L, they just heard he was nice and didn't really know his music.

L's from Harlem so I don't know how much he was buzzin in Brooklyn.

But yes, BIG was definitely bigger in Brooklyn and in rap in general.

You are right L was from Harlem. I stand corrected. He was well liked in Brooklyn though, if you was hot in one part of NYC you had city wide props. I do have his albums though so I know his music was dope and he was cut down too soon.

She would be another artist that racist white women/feminist with negative preconceived notions on blacks would pay top dollar to see. Have negative views of blacks but buy up black concert tickets :smh:

Went to drakes concert in 2013 at barclays center and mustve seen 4 black chicks and 3 spanish chicks in a sea of white chicks :smh: . Same for last year it was mostly white people attending concerts.

u do kno timb beats are not cheap rite..i kno he be selling them for 6 figs..not many people got that kinda bank to cop his tracks..he selling audio bentley's while most artist got jetta beat money

Beyonce and Aaliyah are apples and oranges...but, If Aaliyah existed there would be no Ciara.

Janet > Aaliyah > Ciara are all a part of that same sub-genre of R&B where the focus is more on the dances than the actual singing. Beyonce dances too, but its not as technical as them. Her focal point is her voice.

She sure would. Beyonce has TALENT. Aaliyah was just cute. (RIP)
Rihanna is the worst. That WORK song sounds as though she got tired
throughout the taping.

To play the devil's advocate, its barely about talent anymore. If it was still about talent then singers like Lalah Hathaway would be crushing everyone.

Ciara woulda most def made it
She came in that crunk/ jazzy phae era and appealed to it
The south started taking over music aroundthat time. Aaliyah wasnt stopping that

Better questions could be asked about Lauryn Hill.
In 1998, she released her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - an album that:
  • sold 422, 624 copies the first week (breaking a record for 1 week sales by a female artist)
  • "brought neo-soul to the forefront of popular music"
  • produced three hit singles
  • Has as of 2013 gone 8x platinum (over 8 million copies sold) in the U.S.
  • 19x platinum worldwide
  • Garnered 10 Grammy nominations - 5 of which won
  • Which made Lauryn the first woman to receive the many nominations and wins in one night.
If Lauryn had not gone crazy, cut her hair and had legal issues with the performance of "Miseducation's" songs...

Had she done a legit successful follow up full album to "Miseducation" within two years, where would music be now?

Would Alicia Keys have been successful? Would Beyonce have been as successful? Rihanna?

Do you know what you're talking about

CrazySexyCool went diamond. TLC was doing stadium tours and had number one rcords.

And yes more people still talk about ODB than U-God, GZA and Inspecta Deck.

Playa were out before Aaliyah. All of them were with DeVante.

Her uncle sought out Timbaland and Missy after R Kelly because of their talent and what they could do for Aaliyah...which they did

Which is why both of them exceeded her popularity after she died.
TLC was a group which affects how people think of her. They think of her they think of them. If she was the lead singer maybe she'd be more revered.Yeah she was signed as a solid artist butmost people can't name even 1 song by Left Eye.
Playa was with Devante. So what since they didn't drop an album until 98. One in a Million came out in 96.
ODB is more revered than the people that you named. How about the other half of Wu Tang that you didn't mention?

.

ODB was more famous than U-God, Masta Killa, and Inpectah Deck but he was the weakest lyricist of the Wu. The other 8 inlcluding Cappadonna was better at rhyming than ODB. Method Man was the star of the group. The undeniable lyrical talent of the group was Ghostface, Raekwon, GZA(Genius), and from a producer aspect RZA(Bobby Digital)

She would have been a movie star. With occasional albums.

Yeah you can't juggle both in this industry. You can't be a entertainer and singer and actor no more. Will did it for awhile. Fans can't separate the two.

I personally think Aaliyah would've been known more for being a actress then singing. We see where Missy at right now and Ginuwine.

Y'all keep talking about this "better question" shit but not posing better questions.

Lauryn Hill was one of a kind. Alicia still would've been Alicia and Beyonce still would've been Beyonce. There was room for competitors. Though they weren't in Lauryn's lane. Lauryn was a rapper/singer more so Neo soul then she was pop music though her music was popular.

That being said.....Lauryn probably never would've lived up to Miseduction. That was her "Thriller" album. That was her "Confessions". I think a big part of why she's where she's at right now is because she can't live up to that album to this day.

I was thinking the JLo model
