I officially have a problem with Chris Rock's movie "Good Hair"

THOUGHT should always be a prerequisite for action and dialogue/talk is a means of improving thought. "Less talk, more action" sounds good to many but is a recipe for disaster.

Rock has been doing this on a big stage for much longer than Chappelle and has been much more socially relevant in his comedy and overall. I think he's been stupid at times-- that black people vs niggas bit would be an example-- but this movie could be constructive. The audience for a documentary on the economics of hair probably wouldn't fill Chris Rock's house.

Maybe he could have been an economist. :dunno: He's a comedian... Even Michael Moore has comedic aspects to his documentaries; its the only way you can keep the interest of an audience nowadays.

I don't think you can fault him for putting black women under a spotlight as this is obviously a response to the Imus comments that became such a huge issue a couple of years ago.

I haven't seen the movie so I can't praise or condemn it, but I think one aim of it is to start a dialogue. As Imus demonstrates, the idea of this as simply an "in-house" discussion is unworkable-- whether its black people parroting stupid sentiments or white people voicing them, it is going to be a topic for as long as the idea exists. If the movie does nothing more than belittle the idea of "good hair" it could move some people past that stupidity and I think that would be a laudable result.

Point taken..........we will see

Yep, just wikied it, October 9th, should be interesting...

Good Hair is Chris Rock's upcoming comedy[1]/documentary[2] premiering on October 9, 2009.[2][3] The movie focuses on African Americans and seeks to explore some of the aspects of African American hair.[3] According to Chris Rock, he was prompted to make the movie after his 5-year old daughter, Lola, asked him, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?"[3] During his quest for knowledge, Chris Rock delves into the $9 billion black hair industry, and visits such places as beauty salons, barbershops, conventions, scientific laboratories (to learn the science behind chemical relaxers that straighten hair), and India, where many of the hair weaves worn by African American women are from.[1][3] Chris Rock explains that the movie retains a sense of seriousness, yet at the same time remains humorous.[1] The movie features celebrities like Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven-Symone, Maya Angelou, KRS-One, Salt-n-Pepa, Eve, Reverend Al Sharpton, Meagan Good, and Kerry Washington,[3][4] as they talk about some of their own experiences with their hair, and how black hair is perceived in the black community.

Jen: 'Extensions ruined my hair'

• Celebrity hair horrors

As Rachel in Friends, her hair was her crowning glory and sparked millions to imitate her.
But now Jennifer Aniston has revealed that her famous top has become a disaster area - after an ill-advised decision to have hair extensions.
The star, who has already had a hellish few months after husband Brad Pitt left her for Angelina Jolie, admitted that extensions had ruined her hair.
She said her problems started when Friends finished and she decided to chop her famous locks off - and then immediately regretted her decision.
"After Friends I wanted a different look, so I cut my hair. Obviously, I wasn't thinking clearly," she said.
"So I decided to have a couple of extensions, never knowing you end up with 400 things in your head that cause your hair to break off.
"Nothing destroys your hair faster than extensions. It's taken a year and a half to get my hair grown out."
Miss Aniston's comments follow celebrities including Nancy Dell'Olio, Kate Beckinsale and Christina Aguilera all being spotted with temporary bald patches caused by hair extensions.
"Hair extensions are one of the worst possible things you can do to your hair," said trichologist Leonora Doclis of hair specialists The Belgravia Centre.
"Extensions are glued onto your normal hair and they often break off because they are too heavy. Sometimes they break off close to the scalp, giving you a temporary smooth area and at other times they break off about half an inch down."
"Although the damage is usually minimal, sometimes it can be long term. There are also very few occasions in which hair extensions do not cause some sort of damage to your hair.
"I am very against them and advise my clients with thin hair to get a wig rather than hair extensions as they can only cause more damage."
Despite the potential problems, hair extensions are more popular than ever thanks to celebrity fans including Victoria Beckham, Keira Knightley and Peaches Geldof. Demand has doubled in the past three years.
Extensions are made from either real hair or fibre which are woven into the hair and then glued or heat-sealed to stay in place.
The hair extensions were not the only revelation from Miss Aniston, 37, in the interview with American Harper's Bazaar.
Hinting about what went wrong in her marriage with Pitt, she said: "Two people can get lazy, comfortable, and the fantastic things you loved about each other become the things you loathe."
She also talked about her new love Vince Vaughn, who is her co-star in movie The Break Up, saying the pair had an "instant connection".
The star added: "Vince is a fantastic guy, and we're certainly friends, but as for those silly rumours, we're not engaged, not getting at Oprah's, not rushing to have a child."
Pitt and Miss Jolie are, meanwhile, eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child together.
They are expected to have the baby in Namibia, where they have been based for over a month.

Many more Before and After Pictures on the other page:cool:s

Why do we keep putting the wrong spotlight on ourselves?

it's like we are prone to self-destruct.

Asians are having eye surgery, no documentary/movie

White girls are slutting out more than ever, no documentary/movie

To Catch a Predator, they got that shit cancelled with the quickness.

This hair issues is not a black woman issue.

It is a woman issue and as such he should have also focused on other groups but as usual its so easy to beat up on black people...........

I fucking hate when niggas say "Look at what White people do" as an excuse for what we do. Why can't we just take a look at our own issues? Why is it that we have a problem publicly discussion our issues?

Some of you have been in the matrix so long, everything seems normal.

As i said:

This is NOT a black woman problem, it is a woman problem.

Tons of white women use extensions/weaves

But Rock knows better than to put them too in this movie........

No, it IS a Black women's issue. The percentage of other races that use weaves and extensions are MUCH lower than Black women. And those women aren't completely changing thier hair texture. There's a REASON why Black women are specifically getting a Whiter texture of hair. :smh: I can't believe you can't see that.

White women use flat irons to straighten their hair.

Every white woman I have met uses a flat iron.

What is their excuse?

:confused::confused::confused:

FLAT IRON IS STILL CHEMICAL-LESS. Black women who use flat-irons only are called NATURAL.

How, in 2009 with black people all over the world (or even, domestically, just across the US) are you supposed to address these issues in a private manner?

jews, asians and indians (dot not feathers) don't live in one place or state..they have their shit together more than we do..yet don't feel the need to broadcast every move and fart they make.

when they get together and do something its just UNDERSTOOD that its FOR THEM BY THEM...

When we get together to do something its on the steps of the lincoln memorial and CNN. And nothing gets done anyway..

There's a serious disconnect that we just don't get.

I think Bill Cosby had it right when he responded to criticisms that he was "airing dirty laundry" by saying it sounded like the mentality of a scared little child...

I don't know how Rock went about things in the movie, but, seeing as black people got a lot of these issues from white people in the first place (double consciousness), I don't see how they could be resolved privately. There's nothing wrong with educating white people, either...
educating a group that doesn't care is pointless...

^^^^ :lol::lol::lol::lol:

yall gonna make that dude pass out googling and youtubin' all night...

people aren't disagreeing with you, but white women wear extensions for a certain "look"...relaxers and weaves are a STAPLE in black culture man, a multi-billion dollar industry..

and the HEALTH hazards...what health hazard comes from white women styling their hair every now and again? compare that with black women who put chemicals in their hair for 30+ years...

educating a group that doesn't care is pointless...

Education is what makes people care... A lot of this shit, for black people and white people, is simple ignorance. Many white people would be truly ashamed to be as ignorant as some of their ancestors... What is pointless is making generalizations at the group level and then writing off education, which is a major cure of apathy.

Now if only Black bitches would stampede their HAWG asses in to the gym with that same diligence.

i think the stat is black women make up 7% of the us population but account for 70% of hair product sales.

if this movie can open some eyes or make some women leave the weaves and wigs and get comfortable trying natural hairstyles or make black women more conscious about all the money they are spending with these koreans it'll be a good thing.

stop whining until you see the movie.

Then when the horse is out the stable then what?

Throw a million man march?

i think this is a good idea for a film. like someone earlier said, it's all about introspection. if it opens up the eyes of a younger generation of black women to stop them from spending the equivalent of a house's value on a lifetime supply of hair products, then it will have been for a good cause - especially when that money is going towards trying to attain a concept of beauty that is dictated by white people that may not have their best interests at heart. also, just because there isn't a major theatrical release, it doesn't mean that other issues such as the eyelid surgery are not being widely discussed within the specific communities.

Stop worrying about what white people think.

That's all i have to say on the matter.

Where did you get that philosophy?

Ever heard of the CIA? Guess what they do?

Study other people.

Ever heard of the Anit-defamation League? Guess what they do?

Study other people.

Ever heard of the Gay & lesbian Anti-defamation League? Guess what they do?

Study other people.

That is how strategies and counter-strategies are developed.

Get a grip.............

13% of the population and being judged by our worst while every other group is judged by their best is not a problem to you?

So using your logic by 2015 a black man will need a Phd to get the same job as a white high school dropout.

Keep ignoring what goes through the head of the oppressor.......

Good luck to you in the future

Now if only Black bitches would stampede their HAWG asses in to the gym with that same diligence.

Imma have to ask you to refrain calling every black woman a "bitch". Anyway since I went natural black co-workers have done nothing but clown me except the time I had a foxy brown fro lol Other than that I get all kind of jokes or are told to put a perm in it blah blah. Straight hair is cool WAY EASIER TO MANAGE THAN NATURAL HAIR trust me. If I ever got a perm again it would simply be because of that fact. Getting tired of having tangles/knots and whatever. I shouldn't have to fight with my hair everyday detangling and whatever else but it's something I choose to do everyday now. The men that talk the most mess about black women that perm their hair are the ones with the caesars and low cut fades yall don't let your hair grow long enough to deal with half the shit we do with natural hair. Anyway that's all. Oh and yes some women do perm their hair to be white but not all. For most of us it's all we know being that a relaxer is slapped into our heads from the time we are kids...

Oh yeah to the OP if you can name another race more concerned with their hair than black women I would like to know about them. Lonestar29 is natural and has some long pretty hair and some fool said her hair was nappy...like come on that mentality is how most black men look at a natural black women unless her hair is like Mya/Chillis. If your hair happens to be like Macy Gray you need a perm in their eyes.

What percentage of your black female friends do you think will be going to watch this movie?

Are they going to watch it with their weaves on?

Really...............

Hey mouse. I have a low cut now but i miss my afro. I love combing it. I love natural hair its better looking to me. Feels great as well.

I think the subject is a very delicate issue, and has been rather taboo to even mention it amongst ourselves much less put it in a movie. However, some has to tell the emperor that he is walking around naked. Do I trust that Rock can balance the rope of educating while not putting down and degrading? Don't know, however, I would rather a brother take on the subject rather leave it in the hands of some white person, who I know would use the film as a vehicle to put down all black people. Hopefully the focus on the film would be more on how beautiful women with black natural hair looks, rather than to make light at the fact that they are in such a weaken state that they feel that they must emulate the ways of non-blacks to look beautiful.

All women I have met are concerned with their hair, in fact everyone male and female.

Some black males can't stay away from the barber shop either.

Me, I have very long dreads so I don't have that problem but I do share your concern about ignorant blacks in the US clowning on natural hair.......

Back home lots of women have dreads so i'm good.

At the end of the day I do me.

I really hope so.

Hollywood is a strange breed.

Monique made it ok to be big

Then she had bypass surgery............ fucked it up for us

I don't know man.

Some males that want to have the fro look use those "blow out" kits and they have chemicals in them as well as perms. But I recently did a Brazilian Keratin Treatment on my hair which lets your hair stay straight for 3-4 months then wears off then back to normal but I guess I did it wrong cause soon as I put some conditioner and got in the shower my shit blew right back up but it's way more easier to manage and I haven't seen a tangle or knot since which enables me to retain more length instead of cutting knots and tangles out all the time.

All women I have met are concerned with their hair, in fact everyone male and female.

Well all I can say is not every black woman that is natural or wants to become natural wants dreads. Believe me it's not easy. I still haven't figured out what my natural hair likes and it's been almost a year.
