hip hop's First Billionaire: Dr. Dre

Lol@some of these comments.
Lot of bitter niggas in this thread.
Some of yall mad as if new born babies lost their lives over the deal.
You all respected lousy bitches and gotta use ebt cards at the age of 40....he slapped a bitch and is now a billionaire. Get over it.....lol

Jokes! Jokes!
But seriously....
We can talk about the what ifs...percentages...grimy nature of the business...etc. etc... But we could also just give congrats to a Brotha who put in years and years of hard work and just keep it pushing!

thats the biggest problem in the black community..thats why r.kelly can be a predator who video tapes himself pissing on a child and still have a career.

as long as they keep cranking out the hits thats all that matters huh:smh:

Yes......lol.

You had your chance to stunt him back then but instead you bought his records.

Suck it up, and don't worry.

You'll have the same gripe about your POTUS in a few years.

i don't like the "first hip hop billionaire" title

dre came from hip hop true. but he didn't get that $$$ off music, he got it off of a hardware business

you can listen to country/rock/EDM/blues in his headphones
Dres name equity comes directly and solely from his connection to hip hop music. Beats was marketed under his name for this very reason. Hip Hop is pop culture and pop culture was THEE driving force behind the popularity of this product.

Dr. Dre better stop counting his chickens before they hatch -- calling himself the "first billionaire in hip hop" -- a rep for Forbes tells TMZ, once the $3.2 Billion Apple deal is finalized ... the rap mogul will NOT hit the billion dollar mark.

Forbes Assistant Managing Editor for Wealth tells us ... they've done the math, and after state and federal taxes ... Dre will be worth in the neighborhood of $800 million.

It appears Dre only owns 25% of the company ... so the max he'd make off the sale is $800 MIL. After state and federal taxes, he's left with $480 MIL, and when you add in Dre's other assets, that's how Forbes now comes up with $800 MIL. Close but no cigar.
The editor says, "Not quite enough to debut on the Forbes 400 but plenty for bragging rights.”

In the words of Ice Cube ... check yo self before you wrickity-wreck yo self.

anyways props to the D.R.E. i can't hate on Jimmy Iovine either, you think if puffy or suge had introduced Dr. Dre to the headphones game, you think we'd be talking about him getting 800 mil? we'd probably be talking about some dispute about not getting paid a penny. i'm out.

That may all be true but guys like him Diddy and Jay are beyond just Hip Hop. They are businessmen and the Hip Hop title is just limited. It's a title to marginalize who they are and what they've accomplished.

if it's a combination of Apple stock $ cash or just stock he'll get there. Apple stock appreciates nicely.

That's typical though. It was probably already split 50/50 with Jimmy. And they've raised 100s of millions of outside capital. Everytime you raise a round of outside capital, you dilute your equity. Most co-founders (when there are two) end up with around 20 percent..give or take 5 after 2-3 rounds of financing. To put this into perspective, by the time Google went public, the two cofounders owned 10 percent of the company each.

Universal Music was an early investor, they have 14% and Jimmy has 30, I think. Jimmy bought back stock from HTC.

Totally disagree. Its acknowledging who you are and what you are. It also highlights and underlines the importance and cultural impact of hip hop on commerce and pop culture. Anything else would be doing the artform a disservice.

Exactly. Im actually shocked he still has upwards of 20%. Very shocked. I could have sworn he dwindled down to near single digits once he cashed the HTC check. Having this huge chunk is fucking amazing.

HTC sold the shares back to Beats so Dre & Jimmy had an opportunity to buy back shares and they did.

the art form and the business are two separate things tho...he can produce those same funky beats as a hobby.

They're two separate things but there is no business without the artform. I don't see how you guys aren't understanding this. The entire name equity comes from him as a hip hop pioneer and influencer of culture. Monster brand was dead before this. The company targeted an audience familiar with him as a Icon of hip hop culture. Theres a reason why this is Beats by Dre and not Beats by Jimmy. Hip Hop.

Jay - let's do things that will make people listen to me and buy my product

Diddy - let's do things that will make people listen to me and buy my product

Dre - let's make the thing that makes people listen....win

I re-watched that Death Row documentary, and it's crazy to think, after all the dust has settled, the dude who was jerked around the most out of the big names, came out on top.

I'll bet my bottom, when Suge heard about this, he was on some 'Rico' from 'Belly' shit.

aint that always the case tho

Nah.

Too many cases of motherfuckers getting jerked, and never recovering.

What happened to Dre is what happened with Jay-Z. The people around him were banking off of his talent. Even if they go their separate ways, he's still leaving with the talent. Suge thought short-term. Sure, the high you can get exercising your power over your employees may be unmatchable...

...but, it fucks potential business in the future, 'cause now people who would've fucked with you, won't.

lol forbes talking they dont know whats up. they just had dre at 550 if im not mistaking. so even if he gets 400 he still is at 950. but he is getting 480. i think dre know his situation a lil better than forbes but who knows. details will come out sooner than later

but if we go by their theory how did 50 cent end up with 100 mill after he got 400mill from the vitamine water deal?

Man, if the government is taking that much taxes from the wealthy then why do they need my pennies?

I just talked about the California and their crazy ass taxes yesterday.

If you earn over 1 mil/per annum, your state tax rate in Cali is 13%. :smh::smh::smh:

That's not counting Federal, which is substantially more - and self-employment taxes{Social Security and Medicare).

I'm assuming this would fall under capital gains tax, tho'.

Congratulations!!! Every time I think of Dre I think about how he gave up publishing and what he was owed to get out of that Death Row environment. He walked away from money and friends for a piece of mind. Now, look at him. He's recouped all that back and more. Goes to show that sometimes you have to just walk away and let the universe/God take over.

Yeah, his money is doing summer salts for him now.

Yeah. They sold 51 percent to HTC. That probably put him down near 10 percent. But then they purchased their stake back (supposedly with their own money)..but they also took a 500 million dollar investment from Carlyle during that time period. So it's possible but I was shocked too actually

Man. Remember all that talk when Phil Mickelson was like he couldn't afford to live in California. He was like he was getting taxed into poverty. People were pissed but they would probably be feeling the same way if they were paying the type of tax bill to Cali he pays annually. He probably pays state taxes of close to 5 million SOLELY to California. That's crazy

I remember that.

I also remember Limbaugh leaving or threatening to leave NYC because of an increase in income taxes.

What's funny is, NYC tax payers have state and city taxes(highest rate last I checked was 3.6%), and they're still not quite as high as Cali.

I know you can minimize income tax rates, but you're still paying significantly more than you would minimizing in other states.

Fuck that.

People talk wild shit about Texas, but Californians, for instance, have been moving there in droves.
