hip hop's First Billionaire: Dr. Dre

Dr. Dre's "Billionaire" Comments Could Complicate Apple's Purchase of Beats Electronics

Dr. Dre was seen in a video released by Tyrese stating that he is “the first billionaire in Hip Hop” last night (May 8) during what appears to be a celebration of Apple’s rumored acquisition of Beats Electronics. While the Financial Times reported that Apple would acquire the company for $3.2 billion, neither electronics powerhouse has confirmed the transaction. Since the deal has yet to be announced officially, does Dr. Dre’s statement potentially jeopardize confidentiality agreements tied to the multibillion-dollar deal?

To shed light on whether Dr. Dre’s comment broke standard confidentiality agreements, HipHopDX asked White, Weld & Co Securities Managing Director, Corey Davis for his expert opinion.

Mr. Davis says that, “While there is a large amount of speculation in the media about a potential deal with Apple and Beats Electronics, there has yet to be any direct confirmation from the parties involved. I reviewed the video of Tyrese and Dr. Dre talking about the ‘first hip hop billionaire’ and changing the Forbes list. A viewer could infer from the media speculation that Dre is referring to his newly found wealth as a result of the rumored deal.

“The answer to your question regarding whether or not this 'statement' breaks any confidentiality clauses falls into a 'grey' area,” Davis says. He continues:

“There are ethics, there are morals and then there is the law. While I am not a lawyer, one could argue that he didn’t break any laws because (i) even without a deal, the company now has an implied value of $3.2 billion (or more); and (ii) neither Dre or Tyrese mention Apple. I am sure their lawyers aren’t pleased about the video given that it has been removed from Tyrese’s Facebook page.

“Finally, as a privately held company, any leaks of a deal will not cause the deal price to go up—with the exception that it might entice new bidders to come to the fore. However, if the bankers did their job, you would expect all of the likely buyers to have already been contacted. In fact, their lapse in judgment could have an unintended consequence that could cause the deal to collapse. If investors think a deal between Apple and Beats Electronics doesn’t make sense, they could sell Apple stock causing the share price to decline—sending a strong message to Apple management that they don’t approve. If the deal hasn’t been inked, it could cause management to rethink their decision.”

Mr. Davis is a respected executive and strategic advisor with over 18 years of experience. Throughout his career, Mr. Davis has advised on over $14 billion of M&A and capital raising transactions for his clients. Prior to joining White, Weld & Co. Mr. Davis founded Barrington Capital Advisors, LLC, a research and advisory practice where he advised financial institutions, hedge funds and other small to medium sized businesses. Previously, he was a Vice President of both Business Development and Institutional Sales at The Receivables Exchange, a Bain Capital Ventures backed company. Prior to that, he was an investment banker in the Financial Institutions practice at Banc of America Securities, Credit Suisse First Boston (through its acquisition of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette) and J.P. Morgan Securities.

Artist Monk, right now, you are like a nigga at a strip club singing Negro Spirituals.

Sad that we are coded to claim accomplishments and "powerful symbols" under THEIR system and by WHO THEY ALLOW yet all our real powerful symbolic people did this going against the VERY system not trying to be included and acknowledged by it.

The Huey, Malcolm, Martin, Evers, Garvey who RISKED, WERE TARGETS AND/OR MURDERED seeking better standing for their people, not themselves... you naming instead, Obama, Oprah and some hip hop mofos

I'm sure you KNOW this of course but whenever someone black makes considerable money they are by default to be seen as a representation of "power" to us simple "CAUSE".

Why not state it accurately and honestly and say "WE get to look at these people and pretend and delude ourselves into believing we have achieved accomplishments within their system and under their nose or right in their face."

We all know that to be false, they give us money and wealth because they know we will not only MAINTAIN their system but turn around and give it back and make them even MORE money through us than we were given with no exertion on their part required.

Let us call it what it is and not pretend it's something more grandiose and meaningful. Look at Tyrese and his reaction, the swelling up off of getting more money....just more money yet you pubbing Forbes because THE SYSTEM and its structure is what folks are basing their own worth and identity on.

Tyrese went from the empowering self-worth spewing Dalai Lama to Crip walking and cursing and showing ignorance, something we can search YOutube for and won't find whites, or Asians or the Indian diamond families bragging about and making fools of themselves and feeling the need to make sure others see it. We are inherently ruined people within this system, in actuality we are no different than white folks anymore other than pigment, we want what they tell us we are supposed to want and that is whatever they have.

I re-watched that Death Row documentary, and it's crazy to think, after all the dust has settled, the dude who was jerked around the most out of the big names, came out on top.

I'll bet my bottom, when Suge heard about this, he was on some 'Rico' from 'Belly' shit.
:lol::lol::lol:

 exactly. Plus Martin and Malcolm were men of their era, that era is done.. moveon.org niggas. This is a new generation, new issues and battles to fight, you black power mofos stuck in the 60's, it's over and it's not coming back bruhs

If you can't understand why people would be happy to see a black brother from the hiphop era become a billionaire for the first time, you're just being obtuse

Here’s How a Drunk Tyrese and a Phone Call from Diddy Reportedly Cost Dr. Dre His Billionaire Status Amid Apple and Beats Deal

A new report from The New York Times is said to reveal how Grammy Award-winning producer Dr. Dre missed his billionaire mark by several millions of dollars after the West Coast music legend and actor Tyrese Gibson prematurely leaked information about the rapper and Jimmy Iovine’s Beats headphones deal with Apple Music.

In his new book, “After Steve: How Apple Became a Trillion-Dollar Company and Lost Its Soul,” Tripp Mickle’s new details precisely what led to the reported $200 million cut, stating that the deal was said to be $3.2 billion, but Dre’s announcement breached the confidentiality agreement.

As some may remember, in 2014, in what appeared to be a drunk video, Dre declared himself “hip-hop’s first billionaire,” a title that has since only been held by Shawn Jay-Z Carter, who obtained the big B status in 2021.

As published on iMore.com, “It was a sum that Iovine and Dre could barely fathom. As the lawyers worked through final details, Iovine summoned the leadership team of Beats to his home near Beverly Hills. He told everyone that they were on the cusp of finalizing a massive deal. The only thing that could spoil it would be for word of the deal to leak.”

Iovine told his team to keep the information about the pending deal under wraps. However, by 2 a.m., the music executive received a call from Sean “Diddy” Combs who revealed that Dr. Dre and Tyrese had posted a video on Facebook regarding the deal.

Tyrese had posted a chaotic video clip taken in what appeared to be a recording studio, bragging about being drunk off Heineken beers as Dre declared himself the first hip-hop billionaire and Tyrese suggested that Forbes should update its rich-people list.

“At 2:00 a.m., Iovine got a call from Puff Daddy, who was screaming that Dre and Tyrese, a rapper, were talking about the deal in a Facebook video. Iovine pulled up the video and cringed as he saw Tyrese bragging about being drunk on Heineken in a recording studio. When word of the video reached Cook, he summoned Iovine and Dre to Cupertino,” the location for Apple’s headquarters.

The excerpt explained, “He invited them into a conference room for a private conversation. Iovine was anxious and afraid that Cook was going to kill the deal …. He told the music executives that he was disappointed and wished that Dre’s social media outburst hadn’t happened but said that the video hadn’t shaken his conviction that buying Beats was right for Apple.”

The offer was ultimately brought down to $3 Billion and officially pulled back the title of first hip-hop billionaire for the “Forgot About Dre” emcee.
