hip hop's First Billionaire: Dr. Dre

i just think people should understand who and what theyre giving a pat on back to..

I understand what you're saying. However, there are very few success stories (involving black people) in tech. When other successful stories happen, they don't lead them off by focusing on the negative actions in relation to the key founders, etc. I would rather not have this success story become a story about a man who beat a woman in the past. I.E. possibly first black billionaire in tech-music doesn't need to be equated with violence against women.

Because if you do it like that, it becomes a black man issue. And it's not. We can group him into a long list of offenders in tech + music, who aren't for the most part black.

i just think people should understand who and what theyre giving a pat on back to..

No one is giving him a pat on the back for domestic violence issues.

Do you REALLY think, a dude like Dre., coming from where HE came from, achieving THIS level of success, would not inspire AWE and admiration in people who can relate to any degree w/ how he came up?

Maybe if there were substantially more black people on that level people would be more discriminating - but blacks don't have but a hand full of examples of 'rags to billions' stories.

Maybe it ain't right, but to expect anything other than that is unrealistic.

Dude has done what many blacks, to this day, STILL believe is impossible.

That level of success will, for better or for worse, overpower any negativity from your past.

You see how Mrs. Super-Feminist Oprah acts like Jay-Z's body of work isn't littered with sexist and misogynistic lyrics and images?

It's funny what money does to people in our society.

nobody gives a shit tho.dude lost his son he payed enough. it isnt like dude was working for disney or something dude was a gangsta rapper. let him live just saying
thats the biggest problem in the black community..thats why r.kelly can be a predator who video tapes himself pissing on a child and still have a career.

as long as they keep cranking out the hits thats all that matters huh:smh:

the same people that big up Dre for selling overpriced headphones are the same people who chastise Jordan for his overpriced sneakers.

Go figure.

Niggas hate who they wanna be like. The fact that MJ get ridiculed for the same shit yall would praise every other black person for is hilarious.

Kudos to the idiots that expose their true feelings once again.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

They are also the same people talking bout why black folks gotta sell their business (when it comes to Jay-Z/Diddy etc..). Hell...they even question their percentage of ownership.

How is that the "biggest problem" in the black community? I can name more white entertainers that have major moral issues and the white mass community largely ignores it. That's not a black issue. That's a human issue (idolizing entertainers and ignoring their faults).

lol he's just doing his job that's all man. point out some shit under the guise of "just making aware"

Jimmy Lovine is who really own beats, no one knows what percent Dre owns. It could be the same situation like when everyone thought Puffy owned ciroc when he didn't he was just used to sell the product

Two completely different situations.

No one with any basic understanding of the business terms thought Puffy owned Ciroc. It was very publicly listed as a revenue-sharing agreement with the mother company having an agreement with Puffy to market a new brand for a share of the profits (a significant share at that). Puffy didn't start the Ciroc brand nor have any direct ownership in the brand (and that was publicly disclosed).

On the other hand, Dre was a FOUNDER who provided expertise, finance, and connections to start Beats Electronics from the very beginning. He's not a figurehead and everyone( by that I mean that people like myself that follow startups very closely) has known that.

Diddy does not own Ciroc...

...but his deal with them is definitely nothing to hang his head about, especially considering how successful the brand has become since he started marketing it.

Yep. He effectively owns a 50 percent share of the "profits" so it's about as good as a deal you can get without directly owning the company. He's minted money with that deal. It was all upside and practically no risk for him (just risking his brand recognition in pushing the product).

I bet you Diageo feels like Puffy got the better end of this deal because they never expected Ciroc to be so successful. I bet if they could go back in time they would rather have paid him a one time fee like most companies do for celebrity endorsement. However, the truth of the matter is that Puffy's reach is long and he's a master marketer... he's probably the only person in America who could have done that for Diageo with any success.

I think now Puffy is creating and distributing his own products in the "spirits" category now.

i don't like the "first hip hop billionaire" title

dre came from hip hop true. but he didn't get that $$$ off music, he got it off of a hardware business

you can listen to country/rock/EDM/blues in his headphones

Post proof of this please, the only ones who would know this info are puffy and the lawyers who signed up the contract

Does that mean we have to wait even longer for Detox ????

Thanks "Technical Tim".

Puff & Jay didn't get all
Of their money from music either. At this point it'll be damn near impossible to make 1 billion dollars off of music alone.

I don't know if geechiedan understands this - or if he even CARES - but symbols are powerful.

In the past 20 years, we've had two black men become majority owners of NBA teams; a black woman became a billionaire and is, if I'm correct, a 50% owner of a TV network; Obama, a black man, became a two-term president; and Dr. Dre is now filthy rich. A dude from the HOOD-HOOD. Hell, from a hood that's famous for how hood it was during his time.

That's to say NOTHING of the successes of guys like Tyler Perry, Diddy, etc.

These are simply the individuals that are visible, but the more of them there ARE, the more of a shifting there is in the collective self-esteem of blacks in America.

Slowly but surely, black presence in business and corporate America is growing.

No one said any of these people are the best human beings in the world. However, you TAKE from them the positive that you can.

Being inspired by Dre doesn't mean you have to be inspired to abuse women too. Somehow, tho', I think you know that :hmm:

We have pirates and other maniacs with holidays, and slave owners on our money. :hmm:

Oh, absolutely.

It was like, 'Sure. If you can work a miracle, we'll gladly pay you substantially for it'.

Little did they know, that ignorant, hippity-hop Negro really could turn water into wine, so to speak.

Stop being lazy. You want to know: Then go over to Google and do some searches. It's well documented. You'll find forbes, fortune, finantial times, etc articles about it with direct quotes from Diageo executives. Deals like this get publicly discussed, leaked, etc all the time. I subscribe to over 1000 feeds about tech.. I can probably tell you the equity breakdown(within a decent rage of accuracy) of every major tech company you've heard of because the papertrail is too long. These companies are often connected to at least one firm that is publicly traded (or VC) and they have to disclose a lot of financial information. In this case, Diageo is a publicly traded company based in London. They had to disclose the terms in their quarterly listing.

on the one hand its great to see a black man take care of his business...

on the other hand FUCK THAT NIGGA...he beat up a woman over some dumb shit and I don't think ever apologized for that shit

In 1990, Dr. Dre ran into rapper and tv personality Dee Barnes at a record release party. Barnes had recently interviewed Ice Cube about leaving N.W.A., which Dre didn’t appreciate. He slammed her face and right side of her body into a wall repeatedly and had his bodyguard stop anyone from interrupting the beat down. He attempted to throw her down the stairs, but she fought back and instead received some kicks to her ribs and a punch in the back of the head. Dre’s apology was simply this: “People talk all this shit, but you know, somebody [expletive] with me, I’m gonna [expletive] with them. I just did it, you know. Ain’t nothing you can do now by talking about it. Besides, it ain’t no big thing- I just threw her through a door.”

These Niggas and Brawds is Lame...

On May 8, 2014, the Financial Times reported that Apple Inc. were in negotiations with Beats Electronics to purchase the company for $3.2 billion; if the acquisition were to occur, it would be the largest purchase in company history, behind Apple's $429 million purchase of NeXT in 1996.[20] It was estimated that the deal could make Dr. Dre the first billionaire in the hip-hop music industry in terms of net worth (in comparison to his current worth of $700 million on Forbes' The World's Billionaires ranking), assuming that he still holds at least 15% ownership in the company. It is also estimated that the deal would result in a profit of $1 billion for Carlyle Group.

The impending deal was indirectly confirmed by a comments in a photo and video posted to Facebook by Tyrese Gibson later in the day; the video featured him and Dr. Dre making boasting remarks about the acquisition, with Dre himself proclaiming that he could become the "first billionaire in hip-hop", and Gibson declaring that "the Forbes list has changed." Both the photo and video were quickly removed from Facebook the following morning.

naw..he just beat yo sista's ass and you laff about it..now thats some crab in a barrel shit when you really think about young buck:smh::smh:

any male who has no problem putting hands on a female especially over some bullshit gets no pass from me ever.

but we know where youre coming from don't we...I truly feel sorry for your mother:smh:

lol smh.

Dre has folks in sweat shops being paid even lower than NIKE has in their sweat shops.

Dre made reckless "gangsta" music and help making "thug" culture "cool".

Dre beat a woman's ass damn near to a pulp and didn't apologize and never will.

In conclusion? Dre is the MAN!

"I'm a democrat"

"I love blk women"

"I helped fund many pro black films in the late 80's/early 90's"

"I slapped a white bitch once for calling me a nigg*r"

"Donald sterling racist ass doesn't belong in our league"

"Republicans buy sneakers too"

In conclusion? FUCK Jordan

:lol::lol::lol:

I fucks with both of my black brothers... I feel bad for the ones who don't. Especially the ones who celebrate Dre and shit on MJ.

Wrong is wrong. Nothing changes that. Ask Chris Brown or even R Kelly. For that matter ask Sterling another delusional billionaire with a warped mind and warped mentality. There are many many morally bankrupt billionaires all over the world. Their money makes them no more or no less as human and as filled with flaws as any of the rest of us.

But Dre's flaws do not diminish his accomplishments or the significance of a dude from his background from Compton or wherever he is actually from and as a black man. So without excusing or defending or minimizing what he did wrong his accomplishments and achievements especially coming from hip-hop cannot be diminished or minimized either.

The hip-hop billionaire race has amped up in the last decade or so between a few top names in hip-hop. This is undeniably a historical moment. Kanye needs to learn from these dudes. This is what he was ranting and raving about awhile back.

So congratulations are truly in order with dude's flaws and all.

If someone had told me back in 1988 when I was trying to tape record "turn off the lights" off of WRDW so I could play it while I was trying to finger Renee Rodriguez (the neighborhood ho)that the silly nigga half rappin and half talkin on this song would be hip hop's first billionaire I would have told them they were high as fuck! And in that same year if someone had told me that the corny side nigga that was rolling around with B list rapper Jaz singing some "Hawaiian Sophie" would become one of the kings of NY I would have laughed at that person too! I'm sure Puffy was at Howard University at this point and no one had ever heard of him! But its truly amazing the journey these guys have taken to go from nothingness to phenomenal success! You just never know these days.
