~ Fresh Prince of Bel-Air -----> 'PAPA'S GOT A BRAND-NEW EXCUSE'

Anyone else have any other fave moments from the series? The other episode that often gets talked about alot is when Will gets shot.
To me his best acting to day movies included had to be the episode when Carlton took the speed pill and ODed, then Will had to tell the family the pills were his. When he broke down and started crying he literally brought tears to my mom's eyes.

its lonely out there when its just you. the world will eat you alive. i got all this pressure to man-up. especially living in a house with a mother and sister... . but how could i man-up if i was never showed?? thats why i just strap it on my back and keep it movin. i got to where i'm at without him, doin me. and my mother wonders why im so cold ...

i know yall dudes dont give a shit about my situation.....I'm writin this for myself.

I agree whole-heartedly, man. I had a father around until I was 16, but he was an angry, depressive, mean-spirited alcoholic who used INTIMIDATION and verbal/emotional/psychological harshness to affect everyone around him. Including people in general public and friends of family, etc. I was always embarassed being around him in public in that he created a scene with SO MANY people in my first 16 ... looking to pick fights and stare/glare people down, and challenge them when they weren't living up to his standards, or acting quickly on the spot. PICKED on us as a family, and on so many others. Parents been divorced for about 10.5 years now ... but fuck ... growing up the remainder of my years (and throughout childhood/early teens) AFRAID of my own pops? That's so fucking unhealthy. I told him at my birthday (we went out to get lunch and visit) this past summer that HAD he ever laid a hand on my mom or bro/myself, I'd have kicked the living shit out of him. It hit him pretty hard and he almost started crying. Dude's been sober for 10 + now, but still ... like so many others here on the board from broken homes and worse ... shit was a challenge. I was so envious of friends whose parents acted properly, loved one another, and acted as a team and raised their children alot better. I can remember going to friends' houses and the parents cooking dinner together, showing each other alot of love and affection & being VERY supportive in general. Really healthy home lives. I'd have loved to have been a part of that ... and it's hard to MAN UP quickly in life when your home life consists of a mom who is OFTEN out of town by choice and a little brother who smokes/drinks it up with his crew. Thanks, dad.

Very, very powerful episode. Will acted his ass off on this one.
Anyone else notice that the lil kid that was laughin at the fair played Moesha's brother?

that episode is very very powerful. my sistuation with my father is so damn close to what will was going thru. watching it made me sick, angry, sad, and wondering why he didn't want me either. the only diff is that i saw my pops about 3 times a year : christmas to buy gifts (he was never at the house), around august to buy school clothes and when i got in trouble! the other diff is that i didn't have a step dad. for my 28th birthday my pops decides to call me. he hadn't said happy birthday to me since i was 13 probably. i didn't call back! and this fool had the balls to be mad at me! "i'm 28 where the hell you been dad!" well at least he was there when he was! alot of ppl don't even know their pops

anyway i just had to get that off my chest!

but major props to will and phil (phils acting chops is over looked in this one) for that great perfromance
the part that really got me was when will was saying all the thinigs he did and will do with out his father and all those things i learned on my own so that really hit home, had me in tears!

that was a good episode too, especially near the end..also like the one where nia long first appeared, but as a different character..at the end, during the credits they played this joke where will told carlton she was crazy and had to kill her in
self-defense,carlton wilded out and was running thru all the sets then into the audience

another was where will and carlton tried to pledge a Black fraternity..will got in but carlton didnt cause he was labeled a "sell-out"

that episode where Nia Long first appeared was the one with Queen Latifah, the one you are talking about is the one where Nia Long later was casted as Lisa

Damn, I have been a lurker for years; it took a thread like this to finally make me take the time to write...
Being in a family where i am the step dad, this thread hit home. My sons biological father has tried to get involved with my sons life when it was convenient with him. As a man, who am I to stop another man from trying to right his wrongs, however, when he didnt follow through (the way that Wills' biological did), i had to cut him off.
What brought tears to my eyes was the pain that Will is was going through, i can see my son going through when he gets older. I try my best to be there for him and love him as a son, but i can tell that there is something more he needs that i may not be able to provide no matter how hard i try..

J - How old is your stepson, and are you a stepfather to OTHER SIBLINGS of his as well? If there are several kids ... it might make things challenging. BUT ... I'm thinking IF there's just him (or him and one other child), it may be easier for you guys to faciliate a really healthy and strong bond early on. Much respect to you and his mom for doing the damn thang as parents, and all the best. Be a strong, sensible presence in his life and you/her raise him right, bro.

Much respect, fam'. Yeah - I've been trying to up it as much as possible, and I'm glad it's been able to be seen by so many thus far. Youtube's got a pretty dedicated vid' section. Plus ... MANY of us grew up on alot of the older shows, for real. You name 'em ... Fresh Prince / Saved by the Bell / Boy Meets World / Charles in Charge / Family Matters / Step by Step / Silver Spoons / Who's The Boss? / Mr. Belvedere / Family Ties / Diff'rent Strokes / The Cosby Show / and the list goes on. All the good 80s/90s stuff.

That's seriously heavy, Harlem. I don't blame you at all for not wanting to reply to dude. Dude's non-existant for some 15 years as far as even wishing you a happy bday. Just like Will noted in the scene where he says he's had all those damn good birthdays without him / doesn't need his help, etc. When he turns after the INITIAL barrage of comments and hollers "TO HELL WITH HIM!" I already start tearing up, fam'. And then the follow-up where he adds to it, and then says "How come he don't want me, man?" and starts crying. HEAVY. HEAVY. HEAVY.

a few of those shows had the"Very Special" episode..Different Strokes,Family Matters and Family Ties had the best ones (in the latter case, the one where alex was still in shock over his best friend's death..michael j fox rightfully won the Emmy for that one)..

Thanks for that, fam'. I appreciate that in that I only caught VERY small parts of that series growing up. I was a bit too young at the time. Michael J. Fox is by far one of our greatest exports. Dude grew up 15 mins away, and has a theatre named after him locally. Him, Joe Sakic, Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, and some others = our most notables.

That imagery was so powerful too.

The line where pops says to him that it was nice to see him. Will replies ... "you too ... Lou."

And when Will explains to Phil how he's fared well thus far in life / will continue faring well, didn't need him then, and doesn't need him now. And to break down after all the faux bravado by saying ... "How come he don't want me, man?" and the embrace ... with the camera panning to the statue Will had intended as a gift for his dad ... with the African father caressing his young son. Powerful.

Most DEF. Will gained a lot of respect from me with this episode. It really established him as more than a "funny lil kid".

Excellent Work from the whole cast.

Co-sign. The believability factor is way high. When I was watching, I thought to myself I'd gladly take someone like Uncle Phil as a father/uncle-type figure. Always admired his role in the family unit for the show. Family man.

Yea this was my favorite episode. Followed by the 1 where Carlton took drugs from Will's locker & when Will got shot. It mos def showed the boy Fresh Prince had true actin skill. It still moves me everytime I see it. 100

Damn, I have to let the macho behavior go for a second and admit that tears actually welled into the corner of my eyes...just couldnt help my self.

Probably one of the most emotional episodes i've seen from any sitcom...Good acting too.

My story is somewhat different.

my parents broke up when I was 3 months old.
My grand parents raised me ever since.
I would see my mom and dad from time to time.
My father married another woman and had more kids
My Mother married my step father and had my sister and brother
mom moved to america with my stepdad and left my sister with my stepdad's parents. ( brother wasn't born yet )
I would see my dad from time to time and he'd always give me money and buy groceries...he never really was there for me, but I knew he loved me and he had a new family.
I always was happy to see him though.
I remember one summer he bought me these shoes I always wanted...man i was the happiest kid in Suriname...wore the hell out of them shoes...lol.
I grew up wishing my mom was there though, dont know why...I always missed her more than him.
I didnt really live with my mom untill I was 17, that's when she send for me and my sister to come and live with her and my stepdad in America.

It was very uncomfortable, I could not express my emotions to her. coul;d not hug her for no reason..shit really affected me.
I would see my cousins joke and have fun with their mother and wish I could.
I couldnt, it's like there was something misssing.

my grand parents did a great job raising me though, because up untill I was about 5 or 6 I thought they were my real parents ( I saw my mom and dad when they would visit, but I was too young to process everything and sort it out ) thought my uncles were my brothers and all..weird shit.

to this dad I call my grand parents, pa and ma ( mom and dad in dutch ) I call my mother mom, or ma and my father papa...even when they are in the same room ( i.e my mom and grand mother ) they know who I am speaking too.

because of this my greatest fear is losing my grandmother, since she's the only woman who really knows me.

My grandfather I love to death also, but he's an alcoholic and as a child I had to stand there and watch him beat my grandmother on many occasions.

shit's weird, but made me the man I am today and I always said I would never let my daughter or son grow up without bother parents and at the very least a father.

Wouldnt know my dad if I saw him. The only time I heard from him as a kid was letters asking for money for him in prison & collect calls from jail asking for money. As far as I know he has been in and out of the system my whole life but never found the time to see me.

Anyway My most moving Ep of The Jeffersons was the time Gerorge got stabbed by the girl gang members.

Word. I caught part of that episode in syndication some years back as shows like The Jeffersons, Good Times, All in the Family and so on were all before my time.

An ep' from Good Times that moved me was when Michael was affiliating with local gang members his age or so. His family intervened before things turned really problematic.
