Props to your pops, CBM. Sounds like a 100% stand-up dude.
A grip of us cats here come from broken families/homes ... and don't have the best recollection of our fathers (number of threads about fam'/parenthood on the board over the years).
My old dude was from the old school. He was in his late 40s when I was born. And, even though he and my mom divorced when I was a baby, I saw him every day until I went off the prep school. And it wasn't shit for my mother to call him in the middle of the night and say something like "The hot water tank is broken," and damn if he wouldn't come over at 3:00 a.m. and put in a new one.
And I'm the same way with my daughter.

That's great to hear ... how was your grandfather on dad's side? Sounds like he raised your father really well.
I think the problem in North America in recent decades (regarding very high levels of separation/divorce) is that people aren't sure how to co-exist and parent. It's a CYCLE ... as often gets said when it comes to bad habits getting passed down from one person to the next. We don't know how to live peacefully ... or to be in a proper relationship. And for the youngins coming up ... too many don't have a good point of reference to draw upon. * Not to mention babies having babies (especially in the past 2 decades). *
I had forgotten about that episode, very powerful stuff. It's sad that so many brothers can really relate to that situation.
No doubt ... thousands of us on the board come from broken homes.
Re-up of the episode. Still count this as one of the greatest episodes in Black Sit-Com history.

D-Nice 1 (The Nice One)
5 star thread. I was lucky enough to have my dad there everyday besides when he was overseas up until I was 12. He was in the army but then my parents split up and it went from him living in the same house with me to me not hearing from him for a whole year (I think he was battling depression). We didn't even know if he was alive for that year. That shit killed me and reshaped me. I lived with him after the divorce (when I was 13-14)for about 2 years and that rebuilt our relationship. Now I keep in touch with him and vist him every month or so (He lives out of state). And he even is helping me get my credit back on track and giving me some good life lessons. But I learned how to shave on my own, about girls on my own, went to my first middle school b-ball and football try out on my own (Even though my dad was all-state in his day), got into music by myself (even though my dad was a dj), was in that street lifestyle until at 14 my best friend got arrested for murder, etc... I don't want my kids to go through that shit. This episode always brings tears to my eyes. It's a shame so many young folk don't even know who their father is, that must kill them. 
This compilation is Hilarious, this is one of the reasons Fresh Prince was one of my favorite shows...

FPOBA was such a good show. It was a 'sitcom' with having 'serious' moments, and did it so well it didn't seem 'fake' you know?
Family Matters, while you had to suspend your belief several times, it shouldn't be overlooked IMO. The father Carl wasn't exactly was 'real' at first sight, but when you saw the episode where Eddie had been unnecessarily pulled over and treated harshly just for being in the neighborhood (the White cop's excuse was something like 'he failed to signal') the way Carl handled it because he was a police officer himself made me think of the character highly than I ever did before. Thats when they became 3 dimensional characters.
