I agree whole-heartedly, man. I had a father around until I was 16, but he was an angry, depressive, mean-spirited alcoholic who used INTIMIDATION and verbal/emotional/psychological harshness to affect everyone around him. Including people in general public and friends of family, etc. I was always embarassed being around him in public in that he created a scene with SO MANY people in my first 16 ... looking to pick fights and stare/glare people down, and challenge them when they weren't living up to his standards, or acting quickly on the spot. PICKED on us as a family, and on so many others. Parents been divorced for about 10.5 years now ... but fuck ... growing up the remainder of my years (and throughout childhood/early teens) AFRAID of my own pops? That's so fucking unhealthy. I told him at my birthday (we went out to get lunch and visit) this past summer that HAD he ever laid a hand on my mom or bro/myself, I'd have kicked the living shit out of him. It hit him pretty hard and he almost started crying. Dude's been sober for 10 + now, but still ... like so many others here on the board from broken homes and worse ... shit was a challenge. I was so envious of friends whose parents acted properly, loved one another, and acted as a team and raised their children alot better. I can remember going to friends' houses and the parents cooking dinner together, showing each other alot of love and affection & being VERY supportive in general. Really healthy home lives. I'd have loved to have been a part of that ... and it's hard to MAN UP quickly in life when your home life consists of a mom who is OFTEN out of town by choice and a little brother who smokes/drinks it up with his crew. Thanks, dad.

Being in a family where i am the step dad, this thread hit home. My sons biological father has tried to get involved with my sons life when it was convenient with him. As a man, who am I to stop another man from trying to right his wrongs, however, when he didnt follow through (the way that Wills' biological did), i had to cut him off.
What brought tears to my eyes was the pain that Will is was going through, i can see my son going through when he gets older. I try my best to be there for him and love him as a son, but i can tell that there is something more he needs that i may not be able to provide no matter how hard i try..

My story is somewhat different.
my parents broke up when I was 3 months old.
My grand parents raised me ever since.
I would see my mom and dad from time to time.
My father married another woman and had more kids
My Mother married my step father and had my sister and brother
mom moved to america with my stepdad and left my sister with my stepdad's parents. ( brother wasn't born yet )
I would see my dad from time to time and he'd always give me money and buy groceries...he never really was there for me, but I knew he loved me and he had a new family.
I always was happy to see him though.
I remember one summer he bought me these shoes I always wanted...man i was the happiest kid in Suriname...wore the hell out of them shoes...lol.
I grew up wishing my mom was there though, dont know why...I always missed her more than him.
I didnt really live with my mom untill I was 17, that's when she send for me and my sister to come and live with her and my stepdad in America.
It was very uncomfortable, I could not express my emotions to her. coul;d not hug her for no reason..shit really affected me.
I would see my cousins joke and have fun with their mother and wish I could.
I couldnt, it's like there was something misssing.
my grand parents did a great job raising me though, because up untill I was about 5 or 6 I thought they were my real parents ( I saw my mom and dad when they would visit, but I was too young to process everything and sort it out ) thought my uncles were my brothers and all..weird shit.
to this dad I call my grand parents, pa and ma ( mom and dad in dutch ) I call my mother mom, or ma and my father papa...even when they are in the same room ( i.e my mom and grand mother ) they know who I am speaking too.
because of this my greatest fear is losing my grandmother, since she's the only woman who really knows me.
My grandfather I love to death also, but he's an alcoholic and as a child I had to stand there and watch him beat my grandmother on many occasions.
shit's weird, but made me the man I am today and I always said I would never let my daughter or son grow up without bother parents and at the very least a father.

Wouldnt know my dad if I saw him. The only time I heard from him as a kid was letters asking for money for him in prison & collect calls from jail asking for money. As far as I know he has been in and out of the system my whole life but never found the time to see me.

Word. I caught part of that episode in syndication some years back as shows like The Jeffersons, Good Times, All in the Family and so on were all before my time.
An ep' from Good Times that moved me was when Michael was affiliating with local gang members his age or so. His family intervened before things turned really problematic.
