Discussion: FARGO on FX @10pm Update: Season 5 w/ John Hamm

Just WOW...

I don't even know what I just watched

but I am definitely watching it again

WOW

messed around and went full WIZARD OF OZ?!?!?

Been listening and reading the reviews and podcast recaps. People were definitely loving the black & white format, focus on only a handful of characters, and Wizard of Oz influence.

They were pointing out all types of stuff ...

The 2 "witches" at the hotel (name of the episode was East-West)

How great that tornado scene looked (especially in black and white, as it doesn't look as CGI as it would have had it been in color)

The red cap on Satchel potentially being a call back to the "ruby slippers" in Oz

The dog being named Rabbit ... Rabbi looking out for Satchel

Chasing Rabbit down the staircase in the hotel ... "down the rabbithole" (with the odd characters there)

Etc.

Don't want to post the Youtube trailer for episode 10 tonight - didn't click on it. They usually reveal too much (even though it's quick) and the screencap itself looks to be a scene spoiler.

@Helico-pterFunk

@5:50

THERE is why this show is ALL TIME LEVEL

I know its been mentioned before

but for Chris Rock to ALMOST IMITATE the line delivery about these white folk fake politeness

EXACTLY

THAT is writing

and ACTING.

@playahaitian

It's funny talking about shows like Fargo, or Breaking Bad (with Better Call Saul).

Better Call Saul being the prequel to a show widely regarded as one of the all-time best.

And season 2 of Fargo being nearly 30 years after season 4, lol.

As my dad jokes - "Try explaining that to someone who is unfamiliar with a show!"

Just started watching Barry (season 1) - anyone else in this thread also enjoy that series?

Still working on seasons 1 of both Goliath and Peaky Blinders too.

did Bokeem win ANYTHING for that role?

ANYTHING?

UPDATE

OK but FAR FROM ENOUGH

He won a Black Reel Award and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Critics' Choice Television Award for his role as Mike Milligan on the second season of Fargo

Hawley and his writing team used the second season to expand the scope of the show's storytelling. Season two's episodes were shot in Calgary, Alberta over an 85-day period. The series received widespread critical acclaim and was cited as one of the strongest programs of the 2015 television season. It was a candidate for a multitude of awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series and Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film, and won several other honors recognizing outstanding achievement in acting, directing, writing, cinematography, editing, special effects, and creative direction.

Main article: List of awards and nominations received by Fargo

Fargo was a candidate for a variety of awards, most of them recognizing outstanding achievement in writing, cinematography, directing, acting, and special effects. The series received eighteen Emmy nominations for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony.[81][82] It was named Television Program of the Year by the American Film Institute,[83] and received three Golden Globe nominations—including for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film (Wilson and Dunst respectively).[84] Other accolades included two Satellite Awards nominations in two categories,[85] two TCA Award nominations in two categories,[86] and one Empire Award nomination.[87] At the 6th Critics' Choice Television Awards, Fargo won four awards from eight nominations, the majority of which acknowledged the performance work of the show's cast.[88]

I felt Bokeem was a LEAD actor

but that's just me.

Good stuff. Just watched 2 eps the other day too.

Great to see Hader not typecasting himself. He was great on SNL, but good to see him go this route.

The end of the 1st episode with the shootings & then walking into the diner?

Saw that and I was like - "I'm in ... you got me ..."

Agreed. One of the issues each season is they have such large casts. Been listening to the current 4th season podcasts, and the hosts and co-hosts are often mispronouncing peoples' names, or forgetting who's who. Which is understandable with a large cast & everyone having great names.

Main
Recurring
  • Glynn Turman as Doctor Senator[8]
  • Timothy Olyphant as Dick "Deafy" Wickware[9]
  • Kelsey Asbille as Swanee Capps[10]
  • J. Nicole Brooks as Buel Cannon
  • Rodney L. Jones III as Satchel Cannon
  • Hannah Love Jones as Florine Cannon
  • Tommaso Ragno as Donatello Fadda
  • Torrey Hanson as Principal Rice Crisco
  • Will Clinger as Mr. Snowman

did you believe HADER would be THAT menacing and physically imposing?

His freaking eyes looked DEAD

I mean its GREAT cause even the most background actor is yop notch so there is QUALITY all over

but you NEED enough STORY so you NEVER waste anyone.

I really like this season after but they COULD have trimmed some fat even for this.

they killed doctor Senator WAY too soon.

Agreed - fans and reviewers wanted Senator around for the whole season. Great acting. Great character. People were like - "Damn, not Senator!"

That's a good point. Plus, he appears to be a tall guy ... and you almost forget he's a comedic actor. That cold vibe. When he was saying "Don't point that gun at me" or "Don't pull that gun on me ..." a few times and then fired on them, walking away saying "Fuck!" and discarding gloves & keys ... I was like "Shit ..."

And fake-pretending to be surprised the next day at the acting class.

@Helico-pterFunk

you know I gotta rewatch that season cause more and more I don;t know if the ending was as SAD as I originally thought

Mike Milligan aint Vic Makey form the SHIELD

he IS smart.

VERY SMART

I think the the mob actually DID give him a promotion.

He was wasted doing that street level stuff no matter how good he was at it or may have liked it...

no more death

but it want like he wasn't still IN CHARGE.

Agreed. Good point referencing The Shield. My dad noted with that ending it was great in that it was the last place criminal Vic Mackey wanted to be. In an office, neutered. That final season of The Shield was great. Walton Goggins on top of his game per usual.

With Milligan ... yeah ... it's interesting with that position at season's end. Still the boss, most likely. Still an ultimate badass. Smart & tough.

that's what I mean

Yeah it was a cage

and NOT what he wanted or expected

but in hindsight?

that WINDOW (of opportunity) to me may have been significant

and remembering his responsibilities

accounting money bribes who to cut off and include

that don't sound MINOR especially with a guy as smart as Mike

and sad too

his father's dream was a a financial empire with banks thru his invention the credit card

and now STILL handling these white folks his genius.

Should we discuss how the they portrayed the Italians despite Everything

NOTHING was more important than FAMILY

those brothers after ALL THAT SH*T?

WORKED IT OUT

cause they could not let those Black men WIN

they FOUND A WAY to WORK TOGETHER.

and I am trying to see if we have ANY example of that kind of UNDYING LOYALTY with the Black mafia?

Is there a LARGER message being showed here?

Agreed. I'm thinking of rewatching season 2 as well - it was so good.

Mentioned to my mom she should check out the current 4th season. She noted she doesn't have FX or Hulu. Said to keep an eye out for the season on Netflix. The past seasons are still on there, right? I think they are. She quite enjoyed past seasons and I said there's an origin story worth seeing (as we're discussing here).

She enjoyed Jessie Buckley (nurse Mayflower) in that I'm Thinking of Ending Things movie a few months ago.
