Who is the better stand up comedian?

Both of these comedians have been around for about the same time period 90s-2000s (although Rock started 5 years earlier in the mid 80s) so I think its fair to compare them.

WHo do you think has been the better stand up performer since Chappelle is clearly more successful in his show and Rock more successful on screen. Thus, who is better at stand up - the true test of great comedian?

If you pick Chappelle or Rock, post a link to their youtube stand up bit you think warrants them being better than the other?

Chappelle is clearly much better at sketch comedy. He's a gifted comedic actor. Rock has been superior as a stand-up, since he matured. His HBO specials have been historic (at least the first two).

Dam, I am the only who think Chappelle is funnier in stand up... don't get me wrong - Rock is hilarious but I think Chappelle is more sophisticated in constructing his comedy and builds themes into them and then connects the themes together.

Like the baby selling weed on the corner bit...

If you watched the whole bit you'll see how he comes back to the baby at the end with the baby in club!

Just my own thoughts.

Dave.....just seems naturally funnier to me...
Chris seems like it's all scripted, doesn't look natural..............and i hate it when he yells with his annoying ass voice!

Dave has the rare ability to communicate with the audience smoothly. It doesn't feel like he is recalling what he wrote down and rehearsed. When you listen to his stand up you feel like your having a funny, but deep conversation with a buddy.

I had made a list in the Murphy/Pryor vs. Robin Harris thread.

I put Robin Harris in the same category that I put Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby, Bernie Mac, Chris Rock, etc...Greats.

I put Eddie Murphy in the class with Richard Pryor. There is nobody else in that class. Eddie changed the face of comedy when he came in just like Richard Pryor did. Eddie was a comedy rock star and he took that fame to uplift his people.

As far as comedy go I break it into categories.

Joke telling - Just straight up jokes. No facial or vocal inflection. Can you retell the joke and get the same laughs.

Physical comedy - Facial and vocal inflection. Some comedians (*ahem* Kevin Hart and Mike Epps) are just naturally funny.

Story telling - Engaging an audience and keeping them interested in the story you are telling with a huge payoff at the end.

Impressions - Self explanitory.

Freestyle - Off the top. Could be in response to the audience to bring them in or it could be how you handle heckling.

Presentation - How does the comedian comand the stage. Some comedians just look like they should be funny by the way they present they shit.

Use of props - Self explanitory. Even if it's just a stool on stage some people can make that shit funny.

This is the technical aspect of comedy. There are great comedians who are only good at one or two of these. The elite master most of them.

The greats are the best at every last one of them. That is Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy.

If you use this list then Chris Rock is the better at all but maybe one of those categories.

Chapelle.

Edit***

Chapelle is more natural and genuine to me. Chris Rock is like Wanda Sykes, he forces shit.

close call but, i gotta give it up to dave that shit he was sayin with the whores uniform keeps me laughin i can always listen to a Dave C comedy special

I'm always going to side with the guy who's funny without trying to hard. That happens to be Dave Chappelle. I like Chris Rock and without a doubt is one of the finest comics of his generation. But so is Chappelle. And being funny is effortless for Chappelle. And Chappelle and Rock are not really in the same generation.

Chris Rock came along with comics like Kinison, Seinfeld, Bill Hicks, Richard Jeni, Steve Harvey, and Martin Lawrence. Chappelle came along with people like Chris Tucker, Bill Bellamy, Monique, Adele Givens, Bill Gaffigan, Dane Cook and the like. Two different generations in the world of comedy.

Dave, He did a show show for 6hours straight!!!!! and he sells out anywhere he goes. He left 50mil to go back to doing what he loves

I was lmao at Dave way before he became famous. He tells a joke like he was talking to a friend about what happen the day before. I like Chris Rock but Dave Chappelle all the way.

exactly. The question is who is the better stand up comedian.

Answer.....

Chris Rock

Whose the better sketch artist?

Dave Chappelle.

Whose funnier?

Thats personal preference.

Honestly, I think cats are thinking about Chris' recent stand up which IMO was just alright.

But his previous stand ups are CLASSIC

dave is more naturally funny and has better storytelling skills IMO.

Thats the point. Read the thread title again.....

But for real, I dig how Chris makes you think about things whether its sociologically, politically or however.

He left 50M because he had a nigga moment and he was cooning too hard.

That was a bullshit story. He just ran out of fresh ideas and couldn't take the pressure of delivering that type of show anymore (especially with a big paycheck on the line). He wanted out, due to exhaustion, after two years, and then was stunned by how well the DVD sold. Tried to come back again, but couldn't get the job done.

(He was "coonin' too hard" right from the start. Nothing suddenly changed.)

Chris Rock is more of a laugh track and Dave Chappelle is a live studio audience (without cue)naturally laughing.
