Japan Approves First Human-Animal Embryo Experiments

A Japanese stem-cell scientist is the first to receive government support to create animal embryos that contain human cells and transplant them into surrogate animals since a ban on the practice was overturned earlier this year.

Hiromitsu Nakauchi, who leads teams at the University of Tokyo and Stanford University in California, plans to grow human cells in mouse and rat embryos and then transplant those embryos into surrogate animals. Nakauchi's ultimate goal is to produce animals with organs made of human cells that can, eventually, be transplanted into people.

Until March, Japan explicitly forbade the growth of animal embryos containing human cells beyond 14 days or the transplant of such embryos into a surrogate uterus. That month, Japan’s education and science ministry issued new guidelines allowing the creation of human–animal embryos that can be transplanted into surrogate animals and brought to term.

Human–animal hybrid embryos have been made in countries such as the United States, but never brought to term. Although the country allows this kind of research, the National Institutes of Health has had a moratorium on funding such work since 2015.

Nakauchi’s experiments are the first to be approved under Japan’s new rules, by a committee of experts in the science ministry. Final approval from the ministry is expected in October.

Nakauchi says he plans to proceed slowly, and will not attempt to bring any hybrid embryos to term for some time. Initially, he plans to grow hybrid mouse embryos until 14.5 days, when the animal’s organs are mostly formed and it is almost to term. He will do the same experiments in rats, growing the hybrids to near term, about 15.5 days. Later, Nakauchi plans to apply for government approval to grow hybrid embryos in pigs for up to 70 days.

“It is good to proceed stepwise with caution, which will make it possible to have a dialogue with the public, which is feeling anxious and has concerns,” says science-policy researcher Tetsuya Ishii of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

ETHICAL CONCERNS

Some bioethicists are concerned about the possibility that human cells might stray beyond development of the targeted organ, travel to the developing animal’s brain and potentially affect its cognition.

Nakauchi says these concerns have been taken into consideration in the experiment design. “We are trying to do targeted organ generation, so the cells go only to the pancreas,” he says.

The strategy that he and other scientists are exploring is to create an animal embryo that lacks a gene necessary for the production of a certain organ, such as the pancreas, and then to inject human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into the animal embryo. iPS cells are those that have been reprogrammed to an embryonic-like state and can give rise to almost all cell types. As the animal develops, it uses the human iPS cells to make the organ, which it cannot make with its own cells.

In 2017, Nakauchi and his colleagues reported the injection of mouse iPS cells into the embryo of a rat that was unable to produce a pancreas. The rat formed a pancreas made entirely of mouse cells. Nakauchi and his team transplanted that pancreas back into a mouse that had been engineered to have diabetes. The rat-produced organ was able to control blood sugar levels, effectively curing the mouse of diabetes.

But getting human cells to grow in another species is not easy. Nakauchi and colleagues announced at the 2018 American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Austin, Texas, that they had put human iPS cells into sheep embryos that had been engineered not to produce a pancreas. But the hybrid embryos, grown for 28 days, contained very few human cells, and nothing resembling organs. This is probably because of the genetic distance between humans and sheep, says Nakauchi.

It doesn’t make sense to bring human–animal hybrid embryos to term using evolutionarily distant species such as pigs and sheep because the human cells will be eliminated from host embryos early on, says Jun Wu, who researches human–animal chimeras at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “Understanding the molecular basis and developing strategies to overcome this barrier will be necessary to move the field forward,” Wu says.

Nakauchi says the approval in Japan will allow him to attack this problem. He will be experimenting with iPS cells at subtly different stages, and trying some genetically modified iPS cells to try to determine what limits the growth of human cells in animal embryos.

President Donald Trump said his administration is going to audit the U.S. gold reserves kept at Fort Knox in Kentucky.

"We're going to go to Fort Knox, the fabled Fort Knox, to make sure the gold is there," President Trump said Wednesday on Air Force One.

A drive to audit Fort Knox has gained steam from comments by Elon Musk on X recently. Over the past few decades, conspiracy theories have emerged from time to time about whether the government is being truthful about the amount of gold stored there because of the fort's high security.

The Treasury Department gives the exact amounts of the U.S. gold reserves on its website and says there are 147,341,858.382 troy ounces in Fort Knox.

"I think if this administration presses for an audit, that'll be a good thing for everybody," said Alamos Gold CEO John McCluskey on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Thursday.

Treasury Secretary Bessent's comments from earlier this month, to "monetize the asset side of the U.S. balance sheet for the American people" also added to recent investor speculation that the U.S. government should audit its gold reserves and perhaps revalue them. The Treasury Department's current gold holdings are priced at $42 per ounce, a level that is set by law and hasn't changed since 1973.

Spot gold on Thursday rose, hitting another record high of $2,954.69 earlier in the session. That's bullion's tenth record high of the year.

The Joint Intelligence Committee is better known for providing briefings to the government on matters relating to security, defence and foreign affairs.

But the latest batch of UFO files released from the Ministry of Defence to the National Archives shows that, in 1957, the committee received reports detailing an average of one UFO sighting a week.

The files also include an account of a wartime meeting attended by Winston Churchill in which, it is claimed, the prime minister was so concerned about a reported encounter between a UFO and RAF bombers, that he ordered it be kept secret for at least 50 years to prevent "mass panic".

Nick Pope, who used to investigate UFO sightings for the MoD, said: "The interesting thing is that most of the UFO files from that period have been destroyed.

"But what happened is that a scientist whose grandfather was one of his [Churchill's] bodyguards, said look, Churchill and Eisenhower got together to cover up this phenomenal UFO sighting, that was witnessed by an RAF crew on their way back from a bombing raid.

Reports of sightings of UFOs peaked in 1996 in the UK - when science fiction drama The X Files was popular.

According to the files, there were more than 600 reports in 1996, compared with an average of 240 in the previous five years.

The figures for 1996 show 609 reported sightings of unidentified flying objects, 343 letters from the public to the MoD's UFO desk and 22 enquiries and questions from MPs.

But by 2009, the MoD's UFO inquiry desk -Sec(AS)2 - had been closed down.

The 18 files released on Thursday are the latest to come out as part of a three-year project between the MoD and the National Archives.

Dr David Clarke, a UFO consultant to the National Archives, explained why the papers are being made public now.

Dr Clarke told the BBC: "Since the Freedom of Information Act arrived in 2005, this subject - UFOs - have become the third-most popular subject for people to write to the Ministry of Defence saying 'please could you release this file, or papers that you hold on this particular case'.

"What they've decided to do is to be totally open and to say, 'look we're not holding any secrets back about this subject we've got all these files and we're going to make them available to the public'."

One includes details on "aerial phenomena" prepared for a meeting of the Cabinet Office's Joint Intelligence Committee in April 1957.

According to a note included in the Red Book, the weekly intelligence survey, four incidents involving UFOs tracked by RAF radars were "unexplained".

'Spaceman'

The documents also include reports of a famous incident dubbed the "Welsh Roswell" in 1974, where members of the public reported seeing lights in the sky and feeling a tremor in the ground.

Other cases included in the files are:

• A near-miss with an "unidentified object" reported by the captain and first officer of a 737 plane approaching Manchester Airport in 1995.

• A mountain rescue team called to investigate a "crashed UFO" in the Berwyn Mountains in Wales in 1974.

• Attempted break-ins at RAF Rudloe Manor in Wiltshire - sometimes referred to as Britain's "Area 51" - the US's secretive desert military base.

• The Western Isles incident, when a loud explosion was reported in the sky over the Atlantic in the Outer Hebrides.

• The 14-minutes of "missing" film relating to the Blue Streak missile test launch in 1964, believed by some to show a "spaceman".

• A gambler from Leeds who held a 100-1 bet on alien life being discovered before the end of the 20th Century, and who approached the government for evidence to support his claim after the bookmakers refused to pay out. The MoD said it was open-minded about extra-terrestrial life but had no evidence of its existence.

The files come from more than 5,000 pages of UFO reports and letters and drawings from members of the public, as well as questions raised by MPs in Parliament.

They are available to download for free for a month from The National Archives website.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - As the U.S. Secretary of Defense prepares to release a report on unidentified flying objects, the facts about the alleged UFO crash in the Cape Girardeau area still remain up in the air.

“I thought Cape Girardeau, spaceship crash, aliens, you’ve got to be kidding me,” said Paul Blake Smith, the author of “MO41 The Bombshell Before Roswell.”

That sparked Smith’s desire to write a book about the alleged crash.

“Everyone was told, do not talk about this. This is a matter of national security. It didn’t happen,” he said “Getting hard evidence for this has been like trying to nail JELL-O to the wall. It’s very frustrating.”

According to what Smith found out, the crash happened late April 1941.

He said the UFO went down in a field somewhere west of the Cape Girardeau Airport between Cape Girardeau and Chaffee.

His main source for the details about the crash was the granddaughter of a pastor named William G. Huffman. The granddaughter said Huffman was called to go to a scene of a plane crash to pray for the victims.

“When he got there, he got the shock of his life. There was no cylindrical airplane with wings or propellers. There was a round silver disc that was broken open, and there was debris metallic shards in the field that had set fire to the field,” said Smith.

According to Smith and Huffman’s granddaughter, there were three creatures at the scene. They said two had already died by the time Huffman arrived.

“One of them was apparently still alive, still breathing as Reverend Huffman knelt over this creature. And they were about three and a half to four feet tall. Your typical grays as we would call them today, with big black eyes and long, thin arms and legs, and the creature expired in front of him,” said Smith.

Smith said the the U.S. military eventually arrived at the crash site, forced everyone to secrecy, and took all the evidence.

“Ever since, it’s a big mystery. Where did they take the physical evidence, the bodies, the debris, and the crashed vehicle that was cracked open, which Reverend Huffman said had little gauges on a kind of instrument panel and tiny little seats? And some hieroglyphic writing on a silver band inside the cockpit. He couldn’t make it out. He thought it was very mysterious,” said Smith.

After KFVS12 reached out to the FBI, officials responded and said, “We were unable to identify records responsive to your request.”

The United States Air Force had a similar response and said they “researched their files and found no documentation concerning this event.”

Air Force officials also said “a review of the histories for the Air Corps Training Detachment at Sikeston, Missouri was undertaken. Regrettably, no mention was found in the official unit histories regarding such an incident.”

“The Cape Girardeau story should be a big bombshell story that got squelched,” said Smith.

Smith said he’s not convinced the Secretary of Defense will release more information next month in its report about unidentified flying objects.

“I’m a little pessimistic. The government has covered this up for about 80 years. I don’t see them suddenly reporting to Congress and the American people. But others feel that yes, closure is coming,” he said.

So, did the alleged UFO crash of 1941 happen? The answer depends on what people believe, but Smith said it doesn’t need to stay that way.

“It really should have put Cape Girardeau on the map, and to this day it could, if someone would just come up with the physical evidence, a piece of metal, even a small one. We sure encourage you to come out and prove this story once and for all,” he said.

Smith wrote a second book about UFOs titled “President Eisenhower’s Close Encounters.”

Italian and Scottish scientists studying the pyramid of Khafre say the “groundbreaking study has redefined the boundaries of satellite data analysis and archaeological exploration,” according to spokesperson Nicole Ciccolo.

Aptly named the Khafre Project, Corrado Malanga from Italy’s University of Pisa and Filippo Biondi of the University of Strathclyde in Scotland led the expedition to discover the Giza Plateau’s second-largest pyramid.

Scientists said they located five small room-like structures inside the pyramid using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology. One structure contained a sarcophagus mistakenly thought to be the pharoah’s tomb, the team said in a press release.

The group claims the five structures — previously unknown before the images — were found in the center of the pyramid.

The newly discovered structures are connected to pathways that lead below the surface and are believed to expose hidden rooms and wells under the 4,500-year-old wonder of the world.

Electromagnetic signals were turned into phononic data that unveiled larger infrastructure leading down thousands of feet underground.

The eight large, vertical structures — theorized to be wells or shafts — are thought to extend over 6,500 feet across and 2,000 feet below ground

A 3D model was created displaying the newly discovered structures inside the central part of the Pyramid of Khafre.​

Researchers didn’t reveal the use of the larger structures that stretch below “ground zero” but plan for further analysis and possible excavation to verify the “artificial nature of the structures.”

The project used two satellites 420 miles up in space to send down radar signals that “photographed” the pyramids, according to the Daily Mail.

Data were compiled into images to create a rough copy of what is believed to be below the pyramids, including the eight wells.

The hollowed structure consists of spiral pathways leading down farther underground.

The group used the data to make a rough 3D model estimating what is believed to be hidden from the world’s eye.

“When we magnify the images [in the future], we will reveal that beneath it lies what can only be described as a true underground city,” Malanga said, according to the outlet.

Skepticism and accusations that the study was a hoax arose when the project did not publish the information with any peer review from independent researchers.

Dr. Zahi Hawass, a renowned archaeologist and Egypt’s former minister of antiquities, promptly called the claims “completely wrong” and “fake news.”

“The claim of using radar inside the pyramid is false, and the techniques employed are neither scientifically approved nor validated,” he told the National.

Researchers created a 3D model for the giant "wells" that descend below the pyramid with a spiral pathway.

The group used the data to make a rough 3D model estimating what is believed to be hidden from the world's eye.​

One researcher at the University of Denver said the claims were “exaggerated” as the technology is not advanced enough to create such images.

Radar expert Lawrence Conyers said there is a likelihood that the five smaller structures found just below the surface may be there because of the history of the area.

Conyers said the land was sacred to the ancient civilizations even before the pyramids were constructed, according to the Daily Mail.

The wild claims have contributed to a growing interest in the possibility of a discovery of ancient texts and other resources from Egyptian myths.

“A remarkably strong correlation between the layout and characteristics of these underground chambers and legendary Halls of Amenti as described in ancient myths,” Ciccolo said.

Radar expert Lawrence Conyers said there is a likelihood the five smaller structures found just below the surface may be there because of the history of the area.​

The Halls of Amenti include the fabled Hall of Records, a hidden room believed to be underneath the pyramid complex or the Great Sphynx containing resources of information about the ancient people of the area.

“These new archaeological findings could redefine our understanding of the sacred topography of ancient Egypt, providing spatial coordinates for previously unknown and unexplored subterranean structures,” Ciccolo added.

SS#’s first went into effect back in 1936. You basically place this number on every important document you fill out like…

• Driver License
• Mortgages/Loans
• Contracts

A Social Security number (SSN) is a unique, nine-digit number assigned to US citizens, permanent residents, and some nonimmigrant workers by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It's used for tax and wage purposes, and is often required to file taxes, start a job, or open a bank account. The SSN is made up of three parts: an area number, a group number, and a serial number.

The SSN Numbering Scheme

Number Has Three Parts

The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts:

• The first set of three digits is called the Area Number
• The second set of two digits is called the Group Number
• The final set of four digits is the Serial Number

Area Number

The Area Number is assigned by the geographical region. Prior to 1972, cards were issued in local Social Security offices around the country and the Area Number represented the State in which the card was issued. This did not necessarily have to be the State where the applicant lived, since a person could apply for their card in any Social Security office. Since 1972, when SSA began assigning SSNs and issuing cards centrally from Baltimore, the area number assigned has been based on the ZIP code in the mailing address provided on the application for the original Social Security card. The applicant's mailing address does not have to be the same as their place of residence. Thus, the Area Number does not necessarily represent the State of residence of the applicant, either prior to 1972 or since.

Generally, numbers were assigned beginning in the northeast and moving westward. So people on the east coast have the lowest numbers and those on the west coast have the highest numbers.

Note: One should not make too much of the "geographical code." It is not meant to be any kind of useable geographical information. The numbering scheme was designed in 1936 (before computers) to make it easier for SSA to store the applications in our files in Baltimore since the files were organized by regions as well as alphabetically. It was really just a bookkeeping device for our own internal use and was never intended to be anything more than that.

Group Number

Within each area, the group number (middle two (2) digits) range from 01 to 99 but are not assigned in consecutive order. For administrative reasons, group numbers issued first consist of the ODD numbers from 01 through 09 and then EVEN numbers from 10 through 98, within each area number allocated to a State. After all numbers in group 98 of a particular area have been issued, the EVEN Groups 02 through 08 are used, followed by ODD Groups 11 through 99.

Serial Number

Within each group, the serial numbers (last four (4) digits) run consecutively from 0001 through 9999.

Another theory is this number is connected to the Alien Conspiracy on who would be selected for whatever sinister agenda the Alien Overlords have planned with humans on Earth.

And another theory is this is the official number the Government will use to select individuals in the case a Extinction Level Event happens upon the Earth.

Pretty much every human on Earth in whatever developed country they live in, has their version of a SS#.

On June 14, 2014, China’s State Council announced a plan to establish a social credit system, which would assign “social credit scores” to citizens based on their behavior [1]. A citizen’s social credit score goes up based on socially desirable actions, like paying taxes or purchasing Chinese products; it declines if a person engages in behaviors that the State Council deems dishonest or otherwise problematic, such as committing crimes or making negative statements about the government. Access to social benefits, like receiving a home loan or travelling on an airplane, would be partly determined by one’s social credit score. With this social credit system, the Chinese government aims to create a more honest and harmonious society.

The Chinese State Council postulates that if citizens are rewarded for good behavior and punished for bad behavior, then people will want to act better. Citizens in China are already seeing the positive effects of this system. As one Chinese citizen explained, “I feel like in the past six months, people’s behavior has gotten better and better . . . For example, when we drive, now we always stop in front of crosswalks. If you don’t stop, you will lose your points. At first, we just worried about losing points, but now we got used to it”. When there are negative consequences, people may think twice about engaging in bad or illegal activities. Over time, when citizens of a society are following laws and acting honestly, the society as a whole becomes just, fair, and peaceful.

Critics, however, regard it as an invasion of privacy and personal freedom. One concern is that the ability for the government to assign these ratings is dependent on China’s increasingly dense network of surveillance cameras and the advancement of artificial intelligence technology. Additionally, some critics argue that the system has flaws and may be subject to error or even abuse by the government. For example, the social credit score of Liu Hu, a Chinese journalist, placed him on the untrustworthy list, and as a result, he was prohibited from flying, buying a home, and sending his child to private school. Former housing official who worked under President George H. W. Bush has made an astonishing claim that the U.S. government spent years funneling money into the creation of a secret underground "city" where the rich and powerful can shelter in the event of a "near-extinction event."

Catherine Austin Fitts, who served as the assistant secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Housing between 1989 and 1990, made the shocking allegations during an appearance on former Fox News host Tucker Carlson's podcast, although there is no concrete evidence to support her claims.

Fitts, 74, who is originally from Philadelphia, cited research by Michigan State University economist Mark Skidmore, who released a report in 2017 stating that he and a team of scholars had uncovered $21 trillion in "unauthorized spending in the departments of Defense and Housing and Urban Development for the years 1998-2015."

At the time, Skidmore noted that he first began investigating the unreported spending after he heard Fitts "refer to a report which indicated the Army had $6.5 trillion in unsupported adjustments, or spending, in fiscal 2015."

"Given the Army’s $122 billion budget, that meant unsupported adjustments were 54 times spending authorized by Congress. Typically, such adjustments in public budgets are only a small fraction of authorized spending," the report noted.

Former Bush Housing Official, Catherine Austin Fitts, who worked in George H. W. Bush's administration, has made a shocking allegation that the U.S. government has secretly spent $21 trillion building an underground "city" in preparation for a "catastrophe."

Fitts served as Bush's assistant secretary of Housing and Urban Development between 1989 and 1990.​

Initially, Skidmore said he thought Fitts had made a mistake, stating that he assumed she had meant to say $6.5 billion, not trillion.

“So I found the report myself and sure enough it was $6.5 trillion," he said.

According to Fitts, who worked as an investment banker before joining Bush's administration, that money was used to fund the development of what she described as an "underground base, city infrastructure and transportation system" that has been kept hidden from the public.

"One of the things I've looked at in the process of looking at where all this money is going is the underground base, city infrastructure, and transportation system that's been built," she said.

"We have built an extraordinary number of underground bases and, supposedly, transportation systems."

She told Carlson that she spent two years researching where the $21 trillion had gone, alleging that she uncovered evidence that there are 170 secret facilities in the U.S. alone, explaining that she and a team of investigators combed through "all the data and all the allegations on underground bases" in order to make a "guess" as to how many might exist.

Additionally, Fitts alleged that several of these bases are located beneath oceans—not just underground.

"We systematically went through and tried to guess estimate our guess—this is totally a guess—of how many underground bases [there are], both underground in the United States, but also underground under the ocean around the United States.

"And our estimate was 170 with a transportation network connecting them," she said.

When Carlson asked what the "purpose" of these underground bases is, Fitts responded that they would be used if a "near-extinction event" was believed to be on the horizon.

Tucker Carlson alleged to Fitts that he knew a contractor who worked on one of the underground facilities.

The shocking claims were made months after a company unveiled plans to build a $300 million luxury, members-only doomsday bunker in Virginia.​

However, she added that she believes these so-called bases could also be used by the government to carry out "secret" projects, such as a "secret space program."

Carlson responded by claiming that he actually knew "a contractor who worked on one in Washington, D.C.," stating: "I remember him telling me about a power box, like a transformer box, on Constitution Avenue. ... He told me [that] was actually the exit, the egress from the White House.

"And I thought, that's kind of crazy in the middle of this big city where I live ... you could build something like that without me knowing it."

Carlson said he had always assumed that those kinds of bases were only located in D.C.—and that they were meant specifically for some kind of "nuclear war," to which Fitts responded: "Some of it is. It's preparation for catastrophe."

As for how these alleged cities and facilities are powered, Fitts said she believes the government has found a way to generate breakthrough energy that she believes is being used to keep them going.

"I'm convinced that this energy exists. If you look at a lot of the really fast ships, flying around the planet, they're not using classical electricity," she claimed.

Fitts' controversial claims come just a few months after a Virginia-based company called SAFE (Strategically Armored & Fortified Environments), unveiled plans for a $300 million luxury, members-only doomsday bunker called "Aerie."

The company says the facility will offer "AI-powered" medical care, "wellness programs," and the ability to "blend protection and luxury" in a way that has never been done before.

SAFE says it planned to build the bunkers—which will cost each entrant a $20 million membership fee—in all 50 states, but was going to construct the first in Virginia because of its proximity to D.C.

"It's the wealthiest state per capita," a company spokesperson previously told Realtor.com®. "It's ground zero for the finest demographic for something like this in the world."

The Trump administration is reportedly leaning on an Elon Musk-allied tech company to build wide-ranging data tools pooling government information on millions of Americans and immigrants alike.

The campaign has raised alarms from critics that the company could be furthering Musk’s DOGE effort to vacuum up and potentially weaponize – or sell – mass amounts of sensitive personal data, particularly against vulnerable groups like immigrants and political dissidents.

In March, the president signed an executive order dedicated to “stopping waste, fraud, and abuse by eliminating information silos,” a euphemism for pooling vast stores of data on Americans under the federal government.

To carry out the data effort, the administration has deepened the federal government’s longstanding partnership with Palantir, a tech firm specializing in building big data applications, which was co-founded by Silicon Valley investor, GOP donor, and JD Vance mentor Peter Thiel.

Since Trump took office, the administration has reportedly spent more than $113 million with Palantir through new and existing contracts, while the company is slated to begin work on a new $795 million deal with the Defense Department.

DOGE has reportedly sought to centralize data at key agencies​

Palantir is reportedly working with the administration in the Pentagon, the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Internal Revenue Service, according to The New York Times.

Within these agencies, the firm is reportedly building tools to track the movement of migrants in real time and streamline all tax data.

The company is also reportedly in talks about deploying its technology at the Social Security Administration and the Department of Education, both of which have been targets of DOGE, and which store sensitive information about Americans’ identities and finances.

“We act as a data processor, not a data controller,” the company insisted in response to the Times report. “Our software and services are used under direction from the organizations that license our products. These organizations define what can and cannot be done with their data; they control the Palantir accounts in which analysis is conducted.”

The Trump administration has reportedly pursued a variety of efforts to use big data to support its priorities, including social media surveillance of immigrants to detect alleged pro-terror views, and American activists who disagree wit Donal Trump’s views..

Earlier this month, a group of former Palantir employees warned in an open letter that the company was “normalizing authoritarianism under the guise of a ‘revolution’ led by oligarchs.”

“By supporting Trump’s administration, Elon Musk’s DOGE initiative, and dangerous expansions of executive power, they have abandoned their responsibility and are in violation of Palantir’s Code of Conduct,” the employees wrote.

Previous reporting from CNN and WIRED has described efforts at the Department of Homeland Security to build mass data tools to support tracking and surveilling undocumented immigrants, a key priority for the White House as deportations still aren’t reaching levels necessary to meet Trump’s promise of rapidly removing millions of people from the country.

The effort has involved merging data from outside agencies like Social Security and the IRS, according to WIRED.

“They are trying to amass a huge amount of data,” a senior DHS official told the magazine. “It has nothing to do with finding fraud or wasteful spending … They are already cross-referencing immigration with SSA and IRS, as well as voter data.”

Since Trump took office, DOGE operatives, many of whom are unknown to the public nor have been vetted, have rapidly sought access to data at key agencies, including the Departments of Education and the Treasury, as well as the Social Security Administration, often over the objections of senior staff.

The efforts have prompted scores of lawsuits against DOGE.

At Social Security, the administration also moved thousands of living, mostly Latino undocumented immigrants into the agency’s “Death Master File” in an attempt to pressure them to leave the country.

DOGE itself is reportedly under audit for its action by the Government Accountability Office, a federal watchdog.

An April letter from Democrats on the House Oversight Committee warned of DOGE’s “extreme negligence and an alarmingly cavalier attitude” toward sensitive data. It claimed a whistleblower had described how “DOGE engineers have tried to create specialized computers for themselves that simultaneously give full access to networks and databases across different agencies.”

The “whistleblower information obtained by the Committee, combined with public reporting, paints a picture of chaos at SSA [Social Security Administration] as DOGE is rapidly, haphazardly, and unlawfully working to implement changes that could disrupt Social Security payments and expose Americans’ sensitive data,” the letter reads.”

Why Are We All Dreaming of the Mall World?​

Let’s talk about a world that hasn’t left my mind. This “world” doesn’t exist in the physical realm as we know it… it’s a dream space, visited only in REM cycles.

Recently I’ve been fascinated by The Mall World. Not a world of actual malls as the name would suggest, but a subreddit devoted to common liminal spaces we all visit in dreams. The description simply reads, “Have you been to one of these common dream locations?”

Have you been to the Mall World in your dreams? Like me, you probably have and just haven’t realized it yet. You might need to see a few photos to jog your memory.

Mall World dreams don’t have to be about a mall — and actually, the most popular images from the subreddit aren’t even of malls. u/andyw2014 clarifies: They are any experiences that seem more realistic, or more emotionally impactful, than an ordinary dream or waking life.

Are these familar dream locations recurring for so many people for a reason? Or are they random firings of a brain that prefers to process the day while running a familiar script? Is the Mall World related at all to This Man?

Reading through the subreddit reminded me of my own Mall World travels. The scary places that I visit typically involve driving; either I’m navigating an endless construction zone with no way out, or traveling on a road bridge that goes up and up to a terrifying degree with no railing on the sides.

A more positive recurring dream location is a night-market-type labyrinth, with street vendors offering samples of food, handmade toys, trinkets, and clothing. It feels like it could be a night market in Tokyo, but I never know exactly where I’m at… still, these are usually pleasant dreams, and I’m happy when I can disappear into that world.

Another dream world place I visit is linked to a deeply embedded childhood memory — many who remember playing the early Tony Hawk games will recognize it.

The thing is: We'd never know it anyway.

In a note to clients out Tuesday, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said there's a 20%-50% chance that we're living in the matrix — meaning that the world we experience as "real" is actually just a simulation.

The firm cites comments from Elon Musk, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Nick Bostrom's seminal paper on the issue as the basis for its 20%-50% view.

Here's BAML (emphasis added):

"Many scientists, philosophers, and business leaders believe that there is a 20-50% probability that humans are already living in a computer-simulated virtual world. In April 2016, researchers gathered at the American Museum of Natural History to debate this notion. The argument is that we are already approaching photorealistic 3D simulations that millions of people can simultaneously participate in. It is conceivable that with advancements in artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and computing power, members of future civilizations could have decided to run a simulation of their ancestors."

BAML also notably highlights Nick Bostrom's three probable scenarios for the human race, which are 1. extinction before reaching a "posthuman" stage, 2. reaching posthuman existence but not simulating evolutionary history, and 3. we are in the matrix already.

Reading Bostrom's 2003 paper, however, makes clear we'd never really have access to full knowledge of any of these scenarios because, as Bostrom concludes, "Unless we are now living in a simulation, our descendants will almost certainly never run an ancestor-simulation."

This "if true, then true, otherwise false" construct means none of this philosophical struggle really matters anyway.

We're either in the matrix or we're not. And if we're not, we're unlikely to create the matrix because if the matrix were plausible it would've been created anyway. And we'd be in it.

The investment implications remain unclear.
