Grant Hill Out 2 Weeks After Appendectomy
January 9, 2008 - 4:52 pm
Arizona Republic -
It was learned on Wednesday that Grant Hill would need to undergo an appendectomy this evening.

Suns' General Manager Steve Kerr said Hill likely is expected to miss about two weeks of play.

Hill, mired by acute injuries in the past eight years of his career, had started all of Phoenix's 34 regular season games, his longest run of consecutive games played since he was in Detroit in the 1999-2000 season. Hill is averaging 15.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists and is shooting 50.7 percent from the field.

Hill came to US Airways Center this morning feeling ill and was sent to the hospital by Phoenix head athletic trainer Aaron Nelson because he was not showing any of the usual flu-like symptoms. At the hospital, it was determined Hill would undergo an appendectomy

Nene goes on indefinite leave

Players told his medical problem 'could be' serious

Nuggets forward Nene has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the team because of a medical condition one player said the team was told "could be" serious.

The Nuggets made the announcement on Nene's leave about a half- hour before their home game Friday night against Orlando. The team did not reveal the nature of his condition.

"When I heard it (Friday) morning, that could have been either one of us," Nuggets guard Anthony Carter said after scoring 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter of Denver's 113-103 win. "It almost brought tears to my eyes. . . . He's like a brother to me."

Carter said he doesn't know what the issue is but that Nuggets coach George Karl told the team Friday morning it "could be" serious.

Karl said "nothing is definitive" as of yet as to what's wrong with Nene. Karl said he still must undergo some tests, and more should be known within a few days.

"I'm very upset that I have to put a little delay on being with the team to take care of my health," Nene said in a statement released by the team. "It is hard to go through when things seem to be going so well. I thank God that he showed me this issue, so I can take care of it. I want to get back on the court as soon as possible to help my teammates. My family and I ask that you respect our privacy during this time."

Karl said he did not speak to Nene on Friday but spoke to his personal manager, Alex Santos. Asked Friday night how Nene was doing, Santos said, "He's OK," but declined further comment.

Nene often has been injured during his six seasons in Denver. He missed all but one game in 2005-06 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament but signed a six- year, $60 million contract with the Nuggets in July 2006.

"I think everything's going to be OK, but there needs to be a strength, a support that comes with people just hanging out with him and making sure we're with him and want him back, need him back, need to get him back, and I think we will get him back," Karl said.

Several players said after the game Friday that they were planning to call Nene.

Forward Carmelo Anthony said he wants to "make sure (Nene) knows that the Nuggets and the whole organization has got (Nene's) back."

"Pray for him," is what forward Linas Kleiza said he'll do. "But he's a tough guy, strong mentally. I think he's definitely got to be able to get better. . . . You feel bad because you're kind of useless. You can't do nothing."

...a little penicillin and he'll be fine.

Seriously, it may be an irregular heartbeat. I hope everything is cool..

Just to follow up on this story: I went to the Denver post and rocky mountain news websites and their forums are buzzing about what may be the problem. I've heard everything from a heart condition to HIV.

Webber: I'll Be Back In Two Weeks
January 14, 2008 - 11:35 am
ABC Sacramento -
In an interview on Sunday, Chris Webber told News10's Bryan May that he will sign with a new club and be back on the court in a matter of days.

"I'll be back in two weeks playing basketball," Webber said.

Webber said he hadn't made any firm decision on where he would resume his NBA career, but the 16-year veteran said he had fielded offers from several NBA clubs and had narrowed his choices down to three teams. Webber declined to name the teams he was considering.

After the Detroit Pistons failed to resign Webber during the offseason, the five-time NBA All-Star
rejected offers to play in Europe, instead choosing to spend time with his family.

"This is the first year in 15 years that I've gotten to spend New Years with my family, Christmas with my family," Webber said. "I'm the oldest of five. For some reason it was just very important for me this year to be with my family."

Nene will be fine, though.

Bynum to miss 8 weeks with injured kneecap

ESPN.com news services

Updated: January 14, 2008, 10:26 PM ET

LOS ANGELES -- Andrew Bynum, a big factor in the Los Angeles Lakers' strong start, will be out at least eight weeks because of an injured left knee.

MRI tests and an examination Monday by team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo revealed Bynum had temporarily dislocated his kneecap and suffered a bone bruise.

"He's already focusing on his rehab," Bynum's agent, David Lee, told ESPN The Magazine's Sam Alipour on Monday.

Bynum is expected to make a full recovery, the Lakers said in a press release.

"If it's not an operation, a surgery he has to go through, we have to be pleased with it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said before Los Angeles played at Seattle on Monday night. "He should be able to recover. The process of us monitoring the season for eight weeks without him, as big an influence as he's been, is going to be difficult."

The 20-year-old center, who leads the NBA in field-goal percentage, was injured early in the third quarter of Sunday night's 100-99 victory over Memphis when he landed on teammate Lamar Odom's left foot while going for a rebound.

Bynum crumpled to the court, and teammates Kwame Brown and Ronny Turiaf had to carry him to the locker room as fans at Staples Center chanted, "By-num, By-num."

A third-year pro taken by the Lakers with the 10th overall pick in the 2005 draft, Bynum is averaging 13.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.06 blocked shots, and has made 189 of his 297 field goal attempts (63.6 percent). He is the league's 11th-leading rebounder and ninth-leading shot-blocker.

The Lakers (25-11) had won six straight games -- their longest winning streak in almost four years -- and 16 of 19 entering Monday night's game at Seattle.

The schedule gets much tougher after that, with games against Phoenix, Denver, San Antonio, Dallas and Cleveland. Then, after a home game against the Knicks, the Lakers begin a nine-game road trip Jan. 31 at Detroit.

"It will take us a little bit of time to figure out on the floor, how we're going to still have the success we've been having without him," Lakers guard Derek Fisher said. "That's what we want to do and we feel like we can do it, but I think it's going to take some time."

Brown moved into the starting lineup for Bynum on Monday and Turiaf would serve as his backup.

Brown, limited to 41 games by injuries last season, has averaged 5.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in eight games after missing 19 because of a sprained left knee and ankle. He entered Monday night's matchup against Seattle having played in 15 games this season.

The Lakers already had a depth problem at center because Chris Mihm has been sidelined with a sore right Achilles tendon and isn't expected to return for at least two more weeks.

"Kwame is going to have to take a big load of the playing time," Jackson said. "We're going to have to shore up the boards a little bit because that's where Andrew really was effective for us and they're going to split duties, Ronny and Kwame."

Bynum expressed optimism as he left the arena after Sunday night's game walking under his own power with a soft brace on his knee while his personal trainer, Sean Zarzana, carried a pair of crutches.

"I'm not in too much pain, only when I bend it," Bynum said. "I don't think it's serious at all. I can move it left and right. Just to take a step forward is the only thing that really hurts. I never heard a pop."

In his last full game before being injured, Bynum had 25 points and a career-high 17 rebounds Friday night in a 110-105 victory over Milwaukee.

from the LA TIMES:

The Lakers have 14 players under contract and can add one more if they wish. They have reached out to free agent Chris Webber and might contact P.J. Brown, each of whom are forward-center types who have not played this season.

Doctors removed a tumor from Denver Nuggets forward Nene, according to the player's Web site Tuesday.

The statement said the surgery was done Monday at a Denver hospital, but it did not indicate whether the tumor was cancerous or where it was located.

Nene's medical team will discuss what to do next after getting test results expected by the end of the week, the statement said.

Nene, who is from Brazil, took an indefinite leave of absence Friday. The team hasn't released any information about his condition.

On Monday, coach George Karl indicated the Nuggets are preparing to be without him for some time.

"I was hurt and saddened by the news," Karl said without elaborating. "Now the support and strength of the team to give to him is important."

Nene, who is averaging 6.4 points and 6.4 rebounds, missed 22 games earlier this season after undergoing left thumb surgery. The Nuggets, citing privacy laws, have gone along with Nene's decision to remain quiet on his condition.

"He's a very private person. He's a very quiet person," Karl said before Monday's game against Charlotte. "I'm sure now he's even more private and more quiet than ever. We're going to reach out to him and make sure he understands what he needs will be given to him, both emotionally, physically and hopefully spiritually, too."

Nene's career has been plagued by injuries. He missed all but one game of the 2005-06 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He missed 27 games the season before with a variety of ailments

Good to know that Nene' was able to have surgery to remove that tumor that he had.

Hopefully he will be able to make a full recovery.

So let me get this straight. Tonight the Nuggets were without:

Nene (tumor)
K-Mart (staff infection in his ass..which means he was shooting up with a dirty needle..but that's another story)
Najera (hyper-extended elbow)
Atkins (sports hernia)
Hunter (just got back but not ready to play)

And Iverson and J.R. Smith just got kicked out of the fucking game.

..yall make it hard to be a Nuggets fan.

No Kenyon.

This week, Karl told the story about Rod Higgins, a former player who injured himself at team picture day. Higgins, Karl remembered, fell off the bleacher he stood on and suffered a concussion. Such is the luck for Karl again: power forward Kenyon Martin is out because of another strange injury — a staph infection in Martin's buttocks.

Martin, who averages 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds, did not play in the loss against the Hawks and said he won't play tonight against Utah.

"I'll go back to the doctor on Friday," said Martin, who limped out of Pepsi Center on Wednesday. "Right now, I'm just in pain."

Eduardo Najera is day to day because of a hyperextension in his right elbow. He played — and started for Martin — in Tuesday's loss at Atlanta, but "he could barely lift up his arm," Camby said.

Kinda makes me wonder what him and Trina be doing at night...

Nene awaits results
After surgery Monday to remove a testicular tumor, the forward is "recovering well and in good condition"
By Benjamin Hochman
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 01/16/2008 12:37:33 AM MST

ATLANTA -- Fate came randomly for Nene.

The NBA randomly selected the 25-year-old Nuggets forward for a drug test and the results detected something abnormal. Doctors soon found a tumor. Monday, Nene had a testicular tumor removed surgically. He now awaits the results of a biopsy to determine if cancer is present.

"I was like, 'Wow, they can find that out in a drug test?' " teammate Steven Hunter said. "It's very scary, but (he's) very lucky."

While the results are pending, the tumor was caught at an early stage, which is reassuring.

"With early diagnosis, your survival rate should be 99 percent. It's really a medical success story," said E. David Crawford, a urologist and cancer specialist at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

Nene released a statement on his website, saying in part, "I want to thank my fans, my teammates, the Nuggets organization and everyone that's been supporting me. My victory will be their victory as well."

His surgery was performed by Dr. Fernando J. Kim, chief of urology at Denver Health Medical Center, who found "a right testicular mass." Kim said, "Nene is recovering well and in good condition."

Last week, team physician Dr. Saurabh Mangalik discovered the presence of the tumor. Nene then consulted Dr. Kim, a fellow Brazilian. Nene took a leave of absence from the Nuggets on Friday. Test results are expected this week.

"This whole thing is so much bigger than basketball," Nuggets star Allen Iverson said. "This is life. Obviously, it's a tough time for himself and his family. All we can do is be there to support him and be a phone call away if he needs us."

For Nuggets coach George Karl, the news was another in a series of sucker punches. After beating prostate cancer, he watched his son, Coby, battle removal of a cancerous thyroid and ensuing chemotherapy in 2006. Then, last year, Coby Karl had cancerous lymph nodes removed.

Before he shared the news about Nene with his team, George Karl met privately with his team captains, Iverson, Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby. The emotions, Karl admitted, were overwhelming. Now, he has to be the strong one.

"We want to build a family of strength for him that he can rely on," Karl said.

When Coby Karl, a rookie for the Los Angles Lakers, heard the news about Nene, he was shaken. "My heart was broken," he said. "It's different when you go through it, but when you know someone else has to go through it, and to know the fears they're going through, it made me want to just be there for him."

The oft-injured Nene, the seventh overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, has had a star-crossed Nuggets career. He missed 22 games this season following thumb surgery, but had returned with a zest. For the season, he's averaged 6.4 points per game and 6.4 rebounds.

Coach Karl said it was premature to determine whether Nene will play again this season but in the best case scenario does not expect him back anytime soon. Denver has an opportunity to apply for a disabled player exception, which, if granted, would allow the team to sign another player for 50 percent of the worth of the disabled player. Nene is making about $8.8 million this season.

"I don't think there's a need to interpret anything until we get all the tests back," Karl said. "There are circumstances and situations that we should know in probably a week. He'll hopefully be back playing this year. But if not, he'll be back healthy, period."

About 7,920 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer in the United States every year — mostly men in their 20s and 30s, according to the National Cancer Institute. About 380 men died of testicular cancer last year.

Testicular cancer gained national attention in 1999 when survivor cyclist Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France, three years after he was diagnosed with the disease, which quickly spread to his brain and lungs. Like Armstrong, most testicular cancer patients can be cured with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of those treatments, the NCI reports.

The majority of Crawford's cancer patients discovered their own cancers, he said, because their testicle swelled or felt uncomfortable.

Monthly checks for lumps and bumps — much like those women perform to check for breast cancer — are probably the best way to catch testicular cancer early, Crawford said.

Source: Grizz, Stoudamire near buyout; Suns, Celtics favorites to sign him
By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com
Updated: January 19, 2008, 2:27 PM ET

Damon Stoudamire is close to reaching a buyout agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies that would allow the 34-year-old point guard to sign as a free agent with either the Boston Celtics or the Phoenix Suns, a source told ESPN.com on Saturday.

There remained a possibility, however, that the Grizzlies would decide against a buyout if one of several teams seeking Stoudamire upped its offer in trade talks.

Either way, a resolution was expected within the next several days.

The Celtics, Suns, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets have all discussed trade possibilities with the Grizzlies to acquire Stoudamire, the 1996 Rookie of the Year and a 12-year veteran. Stoudamire was the Grizzlies' starting point guard over the first two months of the season before rookie Mike Conley was promoted. Stoudamire has not played since Dec. 30.

A source with knowledge of the trade talks said the situation also was being impacted by the possibility of Sam Cassell being traded or bought out by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Cassell is in the final season of a contract paying him $6.156 million. Stoudamire is earning $4.35 million this season and has one season remaining at $4.65 million, half if which is guaranteed.

Of the five teams known to be seeking Stoudamire, the Celtics appear to have the greatest need. Boston does not have a true point guard behind starter Rajon Rondo, a second-year pro who has missed three of the past four games with back and hamstring injuries.

...yo, how the FUCK does the Miami Heat get so many Nationally televised games?

because they got locked in before the season began. every year the broadcaster has to gamble a little bit and guess at which games they feel will be the more exciting matchup.

if the schedule permits, they are allowed to switch to another game if both teams allow and are paid.

the programmers never foresaw the miami heat playing poorly enough to be a last place team, so they take the hit (which means we also take the hit).

without elton brand, the clippers were already a question mark. with 1 of the worst records, they have no urgency to their season and so i can understand their willingess to experiment with roster moves.

on the other hand, i'm not so sure about the celtics. with only 6 losses, there's no need to panic... yet. i'd like to see them try some philosophical changes first. like having other players bring up the ball to relieve some pressure off rajon rondo. like having eddie house bring up the ball less. A LOT less :puke:

As a fan of Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade I feel bad for the team and their losing streak.

However, I don't feel bad for Pat Riley... And his never ending search for a W

Rondo has been solid this year but they need another PG to bring off the bench.

Anyone hear about the policy Stern is trying to implement to put a halt to aging veterans trying to take buyouts to play for contenders?

Read somewhere that he is trying to make them sit out the rest of the season if they take one AND putting a cap on how much the team can settle with the player for.

speaking solely on the information you provided, initially my position is IN FAVOR of it.

from the organization standpoint, it is like a get-out-of-jail free card. or a corporate claim of bankruptcy.

and from an individual standpoint, it seems to throw professional ethics out the window, right alongside personal integrity.

i'd be interested in seeing all of the details regarding this proposal.

The Denver Nuggets have reported that a testicular tumor removed from Nene was malignant.

The team said on Tuesday that the tumor was discovered early, and that medical tests showed the cancer was isolated.

"The recovery rate is extremely high," the Nuggets said in a statement. "In addition, the odds of a recurrence are very small."

The Brazilian player underwent surgery January 14 to remove the tumor. The team said he was doing well, but there was no timetable for his return

Shaq Out Two Weeks After MRI Comes Back

Denver guard Allen Iverson is probable for Wednesday's game, according to the Denver Post.

Iverson injured his left wrist against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. "I think it happened on one of the falls," Iverson told the Post.

Carmelo Anthony will miss tonight's game, but expects to miss no longer than a week of action.

Agent: Stoudamire Will Commit To Spurs
January 31, 2008 - 2:31 am
RealGM Staff Report -
Agent Aaron Goodwin told ESPN.com that Damon Stoudamire, who will clear waivers and become a free agent Thursday at 10 p.m. ET after his buyout from the Grizzlies, has committed to join the Spurs after also considering the Suns and the Raptors, with whom Stoudamire won Rookie of the Year honors in the 1995-96 season.

I don't like this move at ALL.

Can't wait to see the look on Pops face the 1st time Damon jacks up one of those ill-advised 3's with TD posting up down on the blocks

He used to torture poor Tony Parker his 1st couple of seasons. Now he's got the 2nd dumbest PG in the NBA

Interesting tidbit of info

SG Aaron McKie hasn't played for the Lakers since last March, but he still was a key part of the PF Pau Gasol trade. To make the salaries match in the convoluted world of NBA trades, the Lakers needed to sign a cap-hold guy and include him in the trade to Memphis. That gave McKie, who had been working as a volunteer Sixers assistant, a $750,000 contract for the rest of the season. The kicker: McKie, now expected to be a player-coach with the Grizzlies, already was being paid $7 million by the Sixers in the final year of a three-year contract he had signed before the team released him under rules of the league's one-time amnesty program in 2005.

Damn, it's good to be McKie!

Damn, it's good to be McKie!

the NBA never should have approved michael heisly for ownership of the grizzlies.

allowing the fakers to pull that hocus-pocus in order to get closer to matching salaries is just more proof that the owner doesn't care about his franchise.

and for those that aren't familiar with michael heisly's business motto, here it is: "My goal is to keep profits down and cash flow up." :smh:

NO JOKE. :(

and for those that aren't familiar with michael heisly's business motto, here it is: "My goal is to keep profits down and cash flow up." :smh:

To my knowledge, Heisley has been trying to sell the team since 2004 when he pocketed the $250 million that FedEx paid for the naming rights of the arena.

I can't fault the owner for wanting to turn a profit as he is a business man however it takes away from the game when an owner pulls the same methods of managing that Donald T. Sterling did with the Clippers in the 90's.

It seems like you have the owner that will pay the BIG $$$ to keep a team competitive (James Dolan, Mr. Allen, Cuban) and you have the ones that either try to unload salary or operate with overhead so low that it's damn near impossible not to turn profit (Heisley, Bob Johnson) then you got teams where the ownership situation is so fucked up, the NBA board of governors doesn't even know who is in charge (Atlanta Hawks).

Too bad former Duke player Brain Davis didn't have the ends to purchase the team as I think the Grizzlies would be in a lot better shape if that went down.
