Well, I'm not looking at the game, but I just caught the box score on espn.. I will give Fisher credit for thugging it out on that fucked up foot. Injuries really killed the Lakers late.

Side note: Anyone else surprised that Houston would start losing?

Kupchak Unsure About Re-Signing Odom
April 2, 2008 - 4:49 pm
The Los Angeles Times -
Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak has done a great job of turning into an L.A. favorite this season, but he still doesn't know what the team will do in regard to re-signing Lamar Odom this offseason, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"We want to see how we perform in the playoffs, what the market is like this summer, and most important, how successful our team will be in the playoffs," Kupchak said.

Odom has one year left on his current deal worth more than $14 million. When asked about extending Odom's deal, Kupchak seemed much less adamant than he did about retaining fellow restricted free agents Sasha Vujacic and Ronny Turiaf.

"This has surprised us," said Steve Zito, the senior vice president of arena operations. "We're going to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again."

The incident happened an hour before the game was scheduled to begin. The section was roped off and did not affect the game.

Bynum Isn't Making Much Progress
April 12, 2008 - 7:53 pm
The Orange County Register -
The latest report out of Los Angeles is that Andrew Bynum isn't making as much progress as the team would like, according to the Orange County Register.

"I still have a little bit of pain but jumping, running, backpedaling, and quick change of directions are still a problem," Bynum said Friday night.

A knee specialist has not cleared him for practice, and Bynum isn't sure if the second round of the playoffs is an ideal target for his return.

"I hope to be ready by then," he said. "Nobody knows. A couple of weeks from now might be good. It might not be good."

Marbury Tables Euro Talk, Eyes Return
The New York Post - 04/12 - 8:00 AM EST
Stephon Marbury has tabled his plans to play in Italy for a few years and said that he hopes to play in the NBA until then, according to a report in the New York Post.

Marbury hopes to play out the final year of his contract with the Knicks, with the removal of Isiah Thomas in the front office increasing those chances.

"That's my goal is to retire a Knick," Marbury said. "I got a lot of basketball left in me to play. I definitely want to explore overseas, but that's later on, when I'm on the downside of my career. I know I can play another five years at a high level."

Trail Blazers request waivers on F Darius Miles

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—The Portland Trail Blazers have requested waivers on injured forward Darius Miles, a move to save money under the NBA salary cap.

A medical examiner appointed by the league and the players association determined the damage to Miles’ right knee is severe enough to qualify as a career-ending injury, general manager Kevin Pritchard said Monday.

The 26-year-old Miles had microfracture surgery in 2006, and has not played for the Trail Blazers since. Tuesday marks the second anniversary of his last NBA appearance.

“Given the serious nature of his knee injury, we agree with the doctor’s conclusion that Darius has sustained a career-ending injury,” Pritchard said in a statement. “This allows Darius and the Trail Blazers to move forward and achieve closure to this matter.”

Miles signed a six-year, $48 million contract in 2004. By waiving him, the remaining two years and $18 million on his contract come off the team’s salary cap. If Miles signs with another team after being waived and plays in 10 games in any one of the next two seasons, his salary would go back on Portland’s books.

The Los Angeles Clippers drafted the once high-flying Miles out of East St. Louis High School with the third overall pick of the 2000 draft. Kenyon Martin and Stromile Swift were the first choices.

Miles played six seasons with Los Angeles, Cleveland and Portland, averaging 10.7 points in 412 games. The forward appeared in 145 games for the Trail Blazers after arriving from Cleveland in exchange for Jeff McInnis and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje on Jan. 21, 2004.

With the Trail Blazers, Miles averaged 12.9 points. He scored a career-high 47 points against Denver in 2005, but also earned a two-game suspension that season for a verbal confrontation with then-coach Maurice Cheeks.

Miles also has a pair of acting credits, appearing in the films “Van Wilder” and “The Perfect Score.”

micro-fractures used to be an aging veterans injury after accumulating high mileage and wear and tear. now it's plaguing the other side of the spectrum, claiming younger victims because their bodies can't endure the rigors of professional basketball.

Anthony apologizes to fans
By The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 04/15/2008 05:17:59 PM MDT

Carmelo Anthony apologized this morning for his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.

"I am here to truly apologize to my fans, the Denver Nuggets organization, my family and my teammates for the distraction it has brung them," Anthony said during a news conference at the Pepsi Center. "I'm here to man up to my mistake and say I am truly sorry about what happen."

The Nuggets star forward was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Monday at 4 in the morning. The Nuggets beat the Houston Rockets on Sunday night, but Anthony scored just 11 points, tying a season low. Roughly six hours after the final buzzer, he was pulled over.

"I know it's bad timing right now, due to the playoffs and our team success," Anthony said.

"For this to happen is totally unacceptable."

The Nuggets secured a playoff spot going into Wednesday night's regular-season finale.

Anthony repeatedly apologized during his statement, but did not take questions. Teammate Allen Iverson was in attendance.

Heading southbound on Interstate 25 at 20th Street, Anthony was pulled over by an officer after he "failed to drive in a single lane" and for "failure to dim his headlights," said Sharon Hahn, a Denver police spokeswoman. Anthony, 23, was given a series of tests, Hahn said, and was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said Anthony was alone in his car, processed at police headquarters, driven to the downtown hotel at which he was staying, and released "to a sober responsible party."

"He cooperated by consenting to a blood test, the results of which will not be available for approximately two weeks," Anthony's attorney Dan Recht said Monday.

Anthony has a scheduled court hearing for May 14. In addition, Anthony has a hearing set for next month for a February incident in which he was ticketed in Arapahoe County for driving 25 mph above the posted speed limit.

Anthony is having perhaps his best NBA season. He's averaging 25.8 points per game, fourth in the NBA and started his first All-Star Game.

The video of this bullshit is here. Even A.I. got a look on his face like, "nigga please."

BOG Approves Sonics Move To Oklahoma City
April 18, 2008 - 3:52 pm
Press Release -
The NBA Board of Governors today endorsed the recommendation of the NBA Relocation Committee and approved the move of the SuperSonics from Seattle to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season, subject to a resolution of the pending litigation between the Sonics and the city of Seattle that removes any requirement for the team to play at KeyArena for the next two seasons.

“The support for the NBA demonstrated by the fans, government leaders and business community of Oklahoma City over the last three years has been extraordinary,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern. “The Board of Governors is confident that that level of local support will result in success for the Sonics franchise in Oklahoma."

Paul Allen and Mark Cuban were reportedly the only owners to vote against the move.

Nene's status for the Nuggets' Game Two against the Lakers on Wednesday is uncertain, according to the Denver Post.

"I'm hoping he's playing," Karl said. "My gut says there's a good chance he'll play."

If he does play, chances are that it will not be for an extended period of time. He has played in four games since returning from testicular cancer, playing no more than eleven minutes in a game.

the offseason will NOT be kind to Carmelo Anthony:

Anthony failing to change bad rap
By Mark Kiszla
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 04/24/2008 01:40:54 AM MDT

LOS ANGELES — For the 18th time in 22 NBA playoff games, Carmelo Anthony lost, as the Nuggets melted down in a 122-107 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers. At this point, nothing else counts in his pro career. All the money and baskets Melo has made cannot change the ugly rap against him.

Anthony has been cast as the NBA's most beautiful loser.

On a Denver team guilty of no defense and less accountability, Anthony cursed Wednesday night when it was suggested he was again headed for playoff elimination, then called the Nuggets' performance against Los Angeles so disappointing as to be "totally unacceptable."

If the basketball world bows to Cleveland star LeBron James as its young king, then Anthony is a court jester who knows why he's not taken seriously.

"Winning a playoff series would be big. Real big," Anthony told me while he sat in a gym on a spring morning that would end in all-too- familiar frustration, with the Nuggets falling behind L.A. 2-0 in a best-of-seven series.

"I've tried for four years in the NBA, and I'm still trying to get out of the first round. I think doing it would help me overcome a lot, as far as what people say about me. Not that I worry about that. But winning a playoff series would take a load off me, take a load off my teammates, and it would take a load off my organization."

Unfulfilled expectations weigh a ton on Anthony's shoulders.

Sure, we remember Michael Jordan did not win a playoff series until he was 25 years old.

But, at age 23, Melo's development as a leader and growth as a multi- faceted player has suffered because the Nuggets do not demand much of him.

Since a hollow threat to bench Anthony more than a year ago, coach George Karl has often appeared more concerned with remaining his star's pal than acting as a mentor.

Doesn't anybody on the Nuggets care enough to get in Melo's face when he snoozes on defense or shows indifference to rebounding?

Prior to Game 2 against L.A., Nuggets vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman met with Anthony and explained the intensity required to succeed in the postseason.

"The first thing that has to be learned by Melo is the absolute, 100 percent effort he needs to bring every game," Chapman said. "When he's really engaged, when he's not just punching the clock defensively, I don't know if there's anybody better in the game than Melo. But he's still growing as a player. He's got to get to where that intensity is second nature. And it's still not."

A recent arrest for suspicion of drunken driving again brought into question Melo's commitment.

Anthony hears the wicked whispers behind his back that cut like a knife. He pretends not to care.

But the criticism pains him.

Fair or not, the rap against Melo is he fails to lift the level of teammates' play, in the way Kobe Bryant inspires the Lakers to reach higher or dive on the floor in pursuit of a championship ring.

"Nobody can say that I don't make my teammates better. I don't think anybody can say that. Anybody I've played with I've made better," insisted Anthony, who has watched in dismay as teammates have lost their composure and drawn six technical fouls in two games against the Lakers.

"Now, if you judge me off not getting out of the first round, then you have every right to. But I always say nobody in their right mind would say that about me."

What made Melo famous was winning the Final Four as a freshman for Syracuse. But does Anthony define himself first, last and always as a scorer in the NBA, because that's what sells sneakers?

"Nobody ever heard me say that out of my mouth. That would be ignorant," Anthony said."When I say I love this game, it's not just that I love scoring the basketball. I love all aspects of the game."

Before Anthony can earn the love fans give Chauncey Billups in Detroit, there's one big test for him to pass.

Melo must prove he can win when it really counts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Larry Brown wants one more stop on his nomadic coaching career.

Brown resigned as Philadelphia's executive vice president Thursday with the intent to pursue a coaching job at the NBA or college level.

Brown has been a winner at almost every team from the ABA to the NBA to the college ranks, yet hasn't coached since a bitter split with the Knicks and then-team president Isiah Thomas after one dismal season in New York in 2005-06.

"He has the taste of coaching back in his mouth," said Brown's agent, Joe Glass. "It would be refreshing to have a situation going that he could enjoy, rather than the last one, to say the least."

Glass said Brown, who won an NBA title with Detroit and a college title with Kansas, would not rule out returning to either level.

Brown rejoined the Sixers last season as consultant and was hired in January 2007 as a VP more than three years after he quit his coaching job to take the same position in Detroit. The 67-year-old Brown resigned as coach of the 76ers in 2003 after six often-turbulent seasons in which he helped rebuild a struggling franchise.

The Hall of Fame coach had a contentious relationship with Allen Iverson, but the two worked together despite several disputes, and reached the NBA finals in 2001. They lost in five games to the Lakers.

"Larry was born to coach and this is something he and I talked about when I took the job here back in December, so it comes as no surprise to me," 76ers president Ed Stefanski said.

Brown rarely attended games or even practices in his second stint. He returned to the organization to help out his friend and former team president Billy King, and consulted when the 76ers traded Iverson to Denver last season. Not long after Iverson was gone, Brown was promoted.

Brown has been King's mentor since he hired him as an assistant coach in Indiana. When Brown came to Philadelphia in 1997, he brought King with him as vice president of basketball administration. King became team president after Brown resigned in 2003.

Once King was fired in December, Brown's role diminished.

"I think he didn't feel he had a role," King said on Thursday.

Brown's job with the 76ers was his longest with any team in his 34-year coaching career. He left to take the job at Detroit and led the Pistons to an NBA title in the first of his two seasons there before his brief stay in New York.

He was fired by the Knicks that June after going 23-59 and received an $18.5 million payout from the team.

"He wasn't the reason for the horrible situation the Knicks were in," Glass said. "He can get that bad taste out of his mouth and go back to his first love, which is coaching."

Now that Brown is unemployed, teams won't have to contact the 76ers for permission to interview him.

The Bulls have a coaching vacancy, and Charlotte, Memphis and Miami could all be in the hunt for a new coach. Of course, the Knicks have an opening, also.

Brown interviewed with the Grizzlies last summer and considered an opportunity with Princeton.

"He's one of the best in the business and should be coaching," King said. "I think he's got a lot more to offer as a coach. I think it'll be on the pro level."
