Blazers concerned about Oden's weight gain from working out

Associated Press

Updated: November 16, 2007, 8:18 PM ET

PHILADELPHIA -- Greg Oden might be too pumped up for his eventual NBA debut.

Oden is doing what most people with too much idle time tend to do: gain weight. Only Oden is bulking up instead of fattening up and the No. 1 overall pick may be too buff, too fast.

"We don't want him to get bigger. That's going to come,'' Portland coach Nate McMillan said on Friday night. "It's very easy for him to put a lot of weight on having a year off. We've really got to be careful about the weight training with him.''

Oden, who will miss this season after he had knee surgery, was in the weight room Friday night before the Trail Blazers played the Philadelphia 76ers, sculpting his upper body. The 7-footer looked chiseled and has gained nearly 30 pounds of muscle -- all in the upper body -- since he was drafted. He is up to 280 pounds.

That's too much weight to carry on a surgically repaired knee and McMillan is mildly concerned.

"I would much rather have him be wiry strong than bulky, especially coming off a surgery,'' McMillan said. "When you're talking about putting on extra weight and having to carry that weight on a surgically repaired leg, that's not good. We want to be really careful with the weight training with him.''

Oden, who only recently shed his crutches, can't run and is limited to cardio work or pumping iron. McMillan said the change in the physique has been noticeable and wants Oden to back off just a bit and work more on being toned than having his muscles pop out of his suit.

McMillan envisions a build more like David Robinson or Alonzo Mourning than a Karl Malone.

"We want him to be quick and athletic as opposed to bulky and big,'' McMillan said.

Oden, who averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds last season as a freshman at Ohio State, is traveling with the Trail Blazers so he can get a feel for the grind of the NBA season. McMillan said Oden's rehabilitation is going well and he should be set for next year

"I think he understands where he's at and everything that goes along with that,'' McMillan said.

The kid will be alright. Looking forward to seeing what he can do on the court once he starts to rehab in a couple of months but this is not a shock. Other than Joel Pryzbilla, Coach McMillan wants the weight off of all his posts.

Lakers Looking At Webber With Spare Roster Spot?
November 22, 2007 - 4:09 am
L.A. Times -
The Lakers gained some roster flexibility in Tuesday's two for one trade, which saw Trevor Ariza join the organization in place of Brian Cook and Mo Evans, who both head to Orlando.

According to the L.A. Times, immediate speculation had the Lakers filling the extra roster spot with unsigned free agent Chris Webber, although a Lakers' official quickly downplayed such a scenario unless another post player went down for an extended period of time. (Kwame Brown is out indefinitely because of a sprained left knee.)

Webber, 34, averaged 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in 61 games last season for Philadelphia and Detroit.

Denver's Martin Has Bone Bruise In Leg
November 26, 2007 - 5:57 pm
The Sports Network -
Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin had an MRI performed on his right leg Monday, which revealed a bone bruise of his right tibia.

He is doubtful for Tuesday's game against Indiana, and will be day-to-day after that.

The 6-9 forward sustained the injury during Saturday's loss to the Houston Rockets and did not play in the second half.

Martin is averaging 8.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 13 games this season

Varejao Doesn't Want To Return To Cleveland
November 26, 2007 - 5:05 pm
ESPN -
Anderson Varejao's frustration with his contract status has finally come to a head.

Saying he is waiting for Cleveland General Manager Danny Ferry to "show me that he values my contribution to the team," Varejao said in an exclusive phone interview with ESPN.com this weekend from his home in Vitoria. "I just want to be treated fairly, and I don't think Danny's done that."

Varejao expected to be helping the Cavs defend their East crown by now.

"I wanted to come back," he said. "I love the fans, and I really love my teammates. But there are others there that have made it very difficult. It's gotten to the point that I don't want to play there anymore. I'm just hoping for a sign-and-trade at this point."

Ferry isn't ready to give up on bringing Varejao back.

"We fully understand that negotiations can be emotional," Ferry told ESPN.com. "As for Anderson's potential to remain a Cavalier and put this behind us, we value his presence in this organization on and off the court, and that has not changed."

Good riddance.

I dont know why this bum thought he was going to get $10 million a year to put up 6 and 6. Looks to me like a case of trying to keep his pride instead of settling for a deal. His dumbass better take what the Cavaliers give him or he may never play in the NBA again.

Rollie_Fingaz,

Speaking of PG play. Think Denver is missing Steve Blake's solid play at PG? I understand Denver needed more 3 point shooting from the perimeter but nobody on that team is capable of running the point with more eficiency.

Rollie_Fingaz,

I know Anthony Carter was playing with a soft cast on his hand last night but Denver's PG play was pretty bad last night. How long has Carter been back? He started off the game throwing an errant pass out of bounds. Then he threw another lob pass out of bounds. He eventually settled down but I think he logged atleast 30 minutes. He's not that type of player.

Problem is that Chucky Atkins isnt going to run the point any better. Atkins is more of a Derek Fisher type guard than a true point guard.

I know Denver is lacking size right now put K-Mart and Hilario should get healthy come Janauary and will help solidify the front court but I still see the PG position (along with George Karl) being Denver's main weakness.

Think they'll make a trade by the deadline? There are definitely some guys that can come in and help at that position.

Carter has only been back a few games. He'll be OK.

The point guard issue is not the problem that can't be fixed when Atkins returns. The problem with Denver is no post presence. The Nuggets weakest position is the Western conferences strongest. (PF) I am honestly surprised that CWebb hasn't been contacted.

Nene has truly fucked the team by not being in shape. Don't get me wrong..if I was from Brazil, I'd probably be doing the same thing. But he has to stay focus.

If there is a trade, I think it will be for an upgrade at PF. I think that with JR (who has played point, BTW) being in a contract year he would be worth moving.

I read this morning that Anderson Verejao signed a 3 year contract with the Charlotte Bobcats. Cleveland has a week to match it.

Not sure of the terms and the article was in brasilian. :dunno:

Source: Cavaliers Will Match Offer For Varejao
December 4, 2007 - 2:29 pm
Beacon-Journal -
Anderson Varejao soon will be a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers again.

According to a source close to Varejao, he has signed an offer sheet with the Charlotte Bobcats worth $11.3 million over the next two seasons with an option for a third season that could make the deal worth $17.4 million. The Cavs have not received the offer sheet, but team sources said they probably will match the offer on the restricted free agent.

The Bobcats used their $5.3 million mid-level exception to sign Varejao, so that's what the Cavs would pay him this season. Varejao signed the deal Monday in Charlotte and is expected to fly to the Los Angeles headquarters of his agent, Dan Fegan, today.

I was looking at some stats from Sebastian Telfair. Bassy has seemed to find a home in Minnesota, and put together some nice games. He's been averaging double digit points in his last 5 games.

Minnesota has been competitive up until their last two games. They really need that one person that can close out games.

Breaking news this morning of a shooting downtown involving Jamaal Tinsley and his three brothers.

According to WTHR, police say the men, and their friends, had spent the evening at the club Cloud Nine on West 38th street.

As they were leaving the club, they say some people outside were looking at their cars. There was an argument, and the Tinsley brothers and their friends left in three cars, all registered to Jamaal Tinsley, who was not present.

Tinsley, his brothers and their friends tell police they drove downtown and shots were fired at them near the Conrad Hotel at Illinois and Washington.

Police say Joey Qatato -- a trainer for the Pacers -- was shot in the arm. He's in good condition.

While police were investigating, they discovered one man in the entourage had an outstanding warrant in Georgia, he was arrested.

Police say one member of the Tinsley party, who is licensed to have a gun, may have returned fire.

Police are looking for a dark colored Dodge Charger and a blue truck. [READ]

The Pistons acquired center Primoz Brezec and forward Walter Herrmann in exchange for Mohammed, who appeared in every game this season except for Wednesday in Houston.

“We are pleased to welcome Primoz and Walter to the Pistons organization and we feel they will help add depth to our front court positions,” Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said. “We appreciate hard work and professionalism that Nazr and Ronald both displayed during their time here in Detroit and we wish both of them well.”

Hawks' Williams carjacked at gunpoint before game vs. Bobcats

Associated Press

Updated: December 15, 2007, 9:34 PM ET

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Hawks forward Shelden Williams was carjacked at gunpoint Saturday before the Hawks' game against Charlotte, a Fulton County Police spokesman confirmed.

Douglasville City Police said two suspects were arrested late Saturday afternoon at Arbor Place Mall in Douglas County, near Atlanta. The suspects were in Williams' car and were attempting a robbery, according to an officer who answered the phone at the Douglasville Police Department.

The officer, who declined to give her name, said one suspect was taken to a hospital after suffering dog bites from the police canine unit during the arrest.

Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche says Williams provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle used by the carjackers, leading to a search that led to two suspects being arrested at a mall in Douglas County. Williams' car was found at the scene.

"I'm just glad that he's safe," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said.

"Cars and things like that, jewelry, money, all that can be replaced."

Triche said the car was damaged when found.

Williams reported to Philips Arena before the game but missed the team's shootaround. He played just two minutes against the Bobcats, being held scoreless in Atlanta's 93-84 win.

Williams told Woodson and other team officials about the incident when he reported for the game. He said the car was stolen outside a barber shop.

Williams declined comment to The Associated Press.

Fulton County Police spokesman Gary Syblis said Williams was driving a 2008 Chrysler.

Syblis said Williams, a second-year player from Duke, did not identify himself as a player for the Hawks.

Syblis says the incident occured outside a barber shop on Cascade Road.

The incident is only the latest in a series of attacks on professional athletes. Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was shot and killed at his home in what is believed to have been a botched burglary.

Earlier this month, Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley and his entourage were shot at in a parking lot outside a five-star hotel in Indianapolis.

Hawks' Williams carjacked at gunpoint before game vs. Bobcats

Ol Sheldon got jacked in southwest Atlanta and they must've decided to joyride in his car, because Arbor Place Mall is nowhere near where they took his car.

"Christmas time crooks" is what it seems like to me. Stupid punks :smh:

Retirement Crossed Marbury's Mind
December 18, 2007 - 4:05 am
New York Post -
Stephon Marbury is taking a vow of silence.

After speaking at length with a few writers following his Sunday practice, Marbury asked a Knicks PR official if he could skip speaking to media indefinitely to help him better cope with the loss of his father. The NBA has no problems with Marbury's request.

Marbury told the Knicks official he would reevaluate tomorrow whether he was ready to face the press again.

Marbury's 15-minute, brutally honest interview Sunday in which he admitted retirement crossed his mind made him relive all the feelings again and distracted his focus. He said the challenge of playing is as tough as being asked about the tragedy.

"For me the difficult part is I have to grieve in public," Marbury said. "It's harder for me as opposed to my brothers, sisters and mother."

Mourning's Career In Jeopardy?
December 19, 2007 - 9:40 pm
Miami Herald -
Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning left Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Hawks in the first quarter after tearing the patella tendon in his right knee.

Mourning suffered the injury when his knee appeared to buckle while attempting to block a Mario West running layup.

The 37-year old was visibly upset, pounding the court in frustration. After refusing a stretcher, Mourning was helped to the sidelines by teammates.

i just wanted to comment on another bullshit MYTH that has been used in recent years.

when the fakers were doing poorly, 1 of the MANY bullshit excuses fakers fans whined was:

"the team is so YOUNG. OF COURSE they're losing. YOUNG teams don't do well."

funny how the fakers are 15-9 THIS season. 2nd in their division. 5th in the WORSTern conference. THIRD YOUNGEST TEAM OVERALL.

bitch made stans, always making excuses to mask the REAL reason behind team dysfunction.

December 20, 2007 - 6:31 pm

DAMMIT..MCGrady's hurt AGAIN?!?!?!?!*

*-no this isn't a repost..he's actually hurt AGAIN..

:smh: Your boy Nene Hilario and T-Mac must have the same off-season trainer AKA No trainer.

Fucked up part about it is that the Rockets barely get W's when he's out of the line-up.

:smh: Your boy Nene Hilario and T-Mac must have the same off-season trainer AKA No trainer.

Fucked up part about it is that the Rockets barely get W's when he's out of the line-up.

Nene's problem is that he goes back to Brazil in the off-season and instead of staying in shape he gets preoccupied with stuff like this all day:

brazilian_ass_fuck.jpg

And while I don't blame him one bit, he still needs to stay in shape during the off-season. The coach of the Brazilian National team called him out for that. He needs to stay in Denver for the off-season and get with a personal trainer.

McGrady is an overrated dude that is a fragile as dishes in my grandmama's china cabinet. Also, he is NOT a franchise playerr. He would be a good #2 dude. But not who I want giving the ball to in the clutch.

**EDIT**

..and McGrady DOES work out in the off-season.

Sad ain't it??:smh:

Sixers Trade Korver To Jazz For Giricek And Pick
December 29, 2007 - 2:17 pm
Philadelphia Inquirer -
Seeking salary cap space, the Philadelphia 76ers traded Kyle Korver to the Utah Jazz for Gordan Giricek and a first-round pick.

Giricek's contract is expiring while Korver is under contract for three more years after this season.

Sixers head Ed Stefanski told the media that the pick is protected.

The first year the pick can be granted is in 2009 and there are different protections for each year.

Stefanski estimated that the Sixers will be $10 million under the salary cap next season, which would be the most room any team has.

“We felt this was a move for the plan that we have made to look to try to secure cap space in the summer,” Stefanski said via conference calls. “The pick could be a player or a chip in a future trade.”

Thaddeus Young, Willie Green, Rodney Carney and Lou Williams will benefit with more playing time from Korver's departure.

“Kyle, even though I haven’t been personally here in his career, I’ve seen his work from afar and he is a good basketball player that you hate to lose,” Stefanski said.

Stefanski said Korver showed his high character when notified of the trade.

“He was gracious,” Stefanski said. “He is a terrific young man.”

McGrady says knee injury needs additional time to heal

ESPN.com news services

Updated: December 31, 2007, 9:49 PM ET

Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets were hopeful the team's leading scorer was "day to day" as first thought. It looks, though, as if he needs considerable time out of the lineup to recover from a sore left knee.

McGrady told the Houston Chronicle on Sunday that it's more likely he will need as many as three weeks to recuperate because of a "deep bone bruise." He's missed Houston's last two games, will sit out Monday night against Golden State and doesn't expect to suit up for games against Boston on Wednesday and Orlando on Friday.

"I'm the same," McGrady told the Chronicle. "They told me three weeks. I don't have a timetable. I can't do anything about it. It's not tendinitis. It's a deep bone bruise. I'm just doing therapy every day. I lost the strength in my leg. I'll see how I feel toward the end of the week, but Boston, doubtful, Orlando, doubtful."

As far as timetables go, if McGrady misses the following two weeks, the Rockets are looking at seven more games without him.

"He's making good progress," trainer Keith Jones said, according to the Chronicle. "He's got the pain out. He's gotten stronger. We'll just take it day to day after tomorrow."

An MRI exam performed one week ago revealed swollen tendons in McGrady's knee, but no structural damage.

McGrady is averaging 22.8 points per game and also leads the Rockets with 5.1 assists per game.

Also, the Rockets announced that guard Steve Francis will be out indefinitely with bi-lateral quadricep tendinitis and guard Kirk Snyder was given an excused absence from Monday's game for personal reasons.

Francis has played in only 10 games with the Rockets this season and is averaging 5.5 points and 3.0 assists.
