BGOL review .. BATMAN V SUPERMAN... (thoughts, summary, spoilers)

That was weird because he just ripped it in the earlier podcast and then he comes out saying that he liked the movie. It was almost as if he had a heart to heart with Ben right out his first podcast.
I think it was like he said -the 2nd view mellowed and maybe a favor to tone it down was asked of him
All the critiques stayed the same he just presented it in the most positive a way he knew how

Sad Ben Affleck, Like Batman, Has Seen the Future and Doesn’t Like What It Holds

25-ben-affleck-sad.w529.h352.jpg

You may have seen it. Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, the co-stars and titular opponents of DC’s $250 million Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, sitting in front of a black background, the color of which will become quite fitting in about 30 seconds. An interviewer asks the pair if they’ve had the chance to look at the reviews of their new film. They offer some polite, obviously false version of, No, what do they say? The interviewer gamely suggests that the movie’s been met with a “mixed response.” And, as Cavill launches into a defense of the franchise that made him famous, Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” kicks in, and we zoom on Affleck, who looks … very sad.

Whether or not Tom Cruise did invent the global press tour before the release of Top Gun, as he claimed to Jimmy Kimmel while promotingEdge of Tomorrow in 2014, it’s now an expectation for the stars of big-budget blockbusters. You go country-by-country and interview-by-interview hawking your wares to audiences who may have no connection to the film you’re trying to sell aside from your face. Multiple producers told me that Leonardo DiCaprio’s tireless promotion of The Revenant both here and overseas was a major reason why it became a global hit, and DiCaprio’s willingness to shill made for plenty of Good Internet as well as a healthy drumbeat leading to the movie’s release, not to mention his Oscar win.

But the release of Batman v Superman placed particular demands on the more veteran of its two stars. When Affleck appeared on The Tonight Show last Thursday, host Jimmy Fallon laid it on: He said that BvS was opening in 65 countries and on 35,000 screens, to which Affleck replied, with the fatigue of a Roman soldier in his voice, “Yeah … it’s a lot.”Fallon responds, "A little bigger than Argo?" Affleck plays along: “A little bigger than Argo!”

That's one way to frame it. Argo, of course, won Affleck an Oscar for Best Picture in 2012, a film that cost one-fifth of what BvS did and almost certainly received a fraction of the publicity and advertising spend. Argodid receive a wide release, opening in 3,232 theaters in North America to the tune of $19 million; compare that with BvS's 4,242 theaters and $166 million, a sum greater than Argo's entire domestic run. And beyond the scope of the release, the situation couldn’t have been more different. Affleck was the producer, director, and star of Argo, involved in every aspect of production, and it was a prestige release budgeted at only $45 million. Its No. 2 debut was considered a success. If BvS had opened at No. 2, there would've been executions.

But prior to BvS, that prestige-film circuit was Affleck’s new life: Oscar-winning producer and critically respected actor and director, the adult version of the kid who won Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting. Those years of wandering the Gigli wilderness were all but forgotten. When he acted for other directors, it was for celebrated auteurs, the Terrence Malicks and David Finchers of the world.

Now, you might expect me at this point to say that nobody forced Affleck to don the Batman costume so recently vacated by Christian Bale, shattering the tight locus of control he had over his career and image. And strictly speaking, it’s true (cue a Batman monologue here about being held accountable for your decisions, and how you have to choose darkness, or whatever). But the simplicity of that answer belies how closely Affleck’s future is currently tied to Warner Bros., the studio behind BvS: His next acting/directing effort, Live By Night, adapted from a Dennis Lehane novel, will come out from Warner Bros. in 2017, and he stars in Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant, which the studio will release this October.

Both of these movies were delayed in 2015, with rumors suggesting that the delays might be to give Affleck more time to work on various DC-related films, including, potentially, a stand-alone Batman that he would direct. And while Sue Kroll, Warner Bros.’ president for worldwide marketing and distribution, told the New York Times that his superhero roles “were not any kind of quid pro quo for the films he directs,” she also said that Warner Bros. was in the "Ben Affleck business."

This makes sense: Affleck is an elite filmmaker both commercially and artistically. But considering the instability of the industry today, particularly in the realm of mid-budget, serious, adult-oriented films like the ones Affleck likes to make, it’s hard to deny that his partnership with Warner Bros. seems considerably more secure now that he’s an integral element of the studio’s largest and most important franchise.

However, it’s impossible to separate the Affleck that writes and directs his own Oscar-caliber projects from the one who’s starring in BvS. Rumors flew that Affleck rewrote parts of the BvS script on set, and not only on set but in his Batman suit, the kind of gorgeous detail that gives an unsubstantiated bit of gossip like this its power. Affleck denied that he rewrote anything, saying that “there was not a line to change.” But whether he was standing at a laptop in his costume or not, his dismissal is still a misrepresentation: When Affleck signed on to the film, he brought in Chris Terrio, his screenwriter on Argo, to do a rewrite.

Terrio’s now co-credited with the screenplay alongside David S. Goyer, who has an interesting history of his own; he and Christopher Nolan were co-credited with the screenplay of Batman Begins, but he only received a story credit on The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, with Nolan and his brother Jonathan being listed for the script. (Goyer received sole credit for Man of Steel’s screenplay, sharing the story nod with Nolan, who executive produces BvS.) Terrio is Affleck’s guy, and it’s a near certainty that his passes on the BvS script involved some sort of feedback and input from Affleck, even if the Batman never put gloves on a final draft document. With Terrio now a significant part of the DC machine, his presence is a powerful reminder of Affleck’s influence and sway.

According to the Times, Affleck stalled post-production on Live By Nightto do this press tour, and the weary character presented in that Timesstory seems desperate to get done with the horse-and-pony show — which, by its very nature, has resulted in a magnifying lens being placed on Affleck’s now-turbulent personal life, including and especially his split from Jennifer Garner — and get back into an editing room. Unsurprisingly, Fallon did not hold Affleck’s feet to the fire during his appearance, which made it even stranger when Affleck responded to praise from Fallon by saying, “Don’t scare people into thinking this is a critical film. We’re not going for the film critics’ circle. This is an audience movie.”

Affleck appeared, in his defense, to be trying to get ahead of the criticism. But it also demonstrated the forced exhaustion that is going to become increasingly common as the industry's dependence on the superhero industrial-complex continues to grow. As more serious filmmakers and actors become enmeshed, for whatever reason, in the Marvel, DC, and other franchise machines — taking notes from merchandise-oriented execs and trying to make their movies mesh with a million other expanded universe stories — they’ll be doing these same colossal, soul-sucking press tours. And it’s not a comment on the quality of comic-book movies to suggest that because of these demands, we’re going to see plenty more actors and directors looking as tired, frustrated, and ready to be done in the years to come. The song accompanying that YouTube video may have been "The Sound of Silence," but what we've heard from Sad Affleck over the past few weeks sounds much more like resignation.

Not a big fan of the movie but I'm at Trinidad right now and the other day when I was at Trincity Mall this was the line for the movie, you cant see it all but it was going all down the mall for around 50 more people..

you are both on point

I think salavaging that friendship is big and he aint gonna pile

but Smith has a loyal rapid and BIG fan bboy following and being fake with THEM?

Could permantently damage his brand.

So think he is playing safe on all sides.

I wouldnt want to be in his shoes.

And I am a fan of his work!

There were definitely some issues with the editing. Unacceptable considering how long ago this movie wrapped too. And yea man, they have a mess on their hands going forward. I dont see how they can introduce all those JL characters, a villain, and resurrect Superman in one well put together movie. They may wanna rearrange that schedule and have those stand alone movies come first... or as you said, have one JL film sans Supes.

Yeah at this point... I'm actually more fascinated on us opening up the discussion of Wtf do they do in Justice league.

So let's say that the 3 hour cut fills in all kind of blanks that the general audience would not get from this movie about Lex's role with Apokolips. A good chunk of the public isn't going to watch this final version.

So do they spend time in Justice league filling in these blanks again or do they just say fuck it.. Ya'll should have watched the second version and skip over these key details.

They really have the biggest fucking mess that I have ever seen. I really wish that they didn't set all of these dates like Marvel. Here are the things the public knows they HAVE to do in part 1 and part 2...

1. Batman & Wonder Woman locate these other meta humans.
2. Introduce flash
3. Introduce aquaman
4. Introduce cyborg
5. Convince them to join the group
6. Have some kind of headquarters
7. Introduce Stephenworf
8.introduce Darksied
9. Explain motherboxs
10. Future batman makes another appearance
11. Future Flash makes an appearance
12. Future flash gets power armor
13. Rebirth of superman
14. Future flash discovers he can time travel
15. Explain evil superman
16. Lois dies
17. Alternate future is stopped
18. Justice league joins

These are all the things that they HAVE to cover in only two movies.

OK so let me get this straight, I'm sure they're trying to have some future where Superman is evil but come the fuck on, general audiences will think this nigga was dreaming. This nigga had a dream he was flying with bats, then has a dream that fucking Man-Bat is in his mothers grave, THEN HAVE A DREAM/VISION where he fighting para demons and wakes up TO ANOTHER DREAM/VISON OF THE FLASH TALKING HIM, THEN WAKES UP AGAIN. The more i think about the movie the worse it gets.

many fans aren't usually creative- in his case he is a good writer, decent story teller, just not good with visual.. he isn't a good photographer, doesn't block / arrange a shot as well as others.

he might get better in his 50s

Anybody seen the trailer for Midnight special that's coming out Friday...

That shit looks nice. I've always been a sucker for those old school is the kid magic or an alien run from the government movies.

you think its gonna break a billi?

yes....got to 500 too quick for it not to....

i think the directors cut is gonna b off da chain...

i just have that feeling...it just didnt flow right...& i think thats because he had to chop the shit out of it...

so when he gets to put out the movie he wants to i think it will be great...

True.... I guess you will have to also explain why it appeared that Bruce woke up from the Flash dream. I'm just going to accept the fact that WB is just say to fuck it... It's the future and ignore the second time he awoke. They spent too much money on that desert scene to not revisit it in one of these future movies.

I really wish they skipped the entire thing... And just had the flash pop up for real, disappear and move on. They just backed themselves into this huge corner.

Man that shit was fucking awesome. Like i said pages earlier, the film had many issues that caused me to pause... But Batman killed it! And it made all the sense in the world.... Decades of letting scum live, only to watch them kill innocents and continue to terrorize civilians.. then that death visits your door... At what point does a man not snap. Not re-evaluate his methods...?? What man is the same idealistically at 45 as he was at 25?? Dont get much realer than that?

Naw...you can't have that. These dudes look at their Batman underoos and a tear runs down their cheek..."They trusted him".....

Let's all hope u right...

Funny thing last time Affleck played a superhero movie was panned but directors cut was heralded.

Funny u say that on his youtube podcast he is always directing the shots and close ups

I always think damn if you paid that much attention on your actual movies you'd be a great success.

It’s not that they are trying to set-up a movie (in the future) where Superman will be evil… (at least we don’t know that yet, for a fact :dunno:)

Zach Snyder 'hinted' to where they were going with the storylines one of his recent interviews…

- They have already identified and found OTHER Superheroes in the BvS movie... (Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, etc)

- Now if Superman was ALIVE.. he could EASILY convince/recruit the rest of these metahumans to fight by HIS side, in the future.

- But with Superman dead… it will fall on Batman to actually 'step up & become the Leader' and form the 'Justice League' instead.

- The REAL question is.. How will Bruce Wayne CONVINCE these other heroes (who are soooo much more powerful than he is) to Band together? :dunno:

- So it makes for a more interesting dynamic & adds a certain amount of ‘drama’… for a ‘regular human’ to convince these ‘superpowered’ beings (who might ‘look down’ on him, at first).... to band together for the ‘greater good’.

So if the Justice League were a modern day NBA Team....
Who would have a MUCH HARDER time trying to convince other (current) Superstars to come build a ‘team’?

- Would Michael Jordan (i.e Superman)…. who already has 6 championship rings as a player?
- Or would Jerry West (ie Batman)… who has only 1 championship ring as a player?

Jordan can carry ALL of them on his back… And they ALL know it.
If he told them tomorrow... 'I want you on my squad to fight [insert villain]'... it's a no-brainer. They coming. Without hesitation.

But Jerry West is the NBA logo…. Can he still do it on his own? Is he too old to get the job done? :dunno:

And after they agree to ’team up’ without him... and struggle a bit with ‘Team Chemistry’ in the Playoffs… ‘Jordan’ LITERALLY comes back from 'retirement' to bring it home & ‘close the show’.

[** Insert Russell Simmons voice: “Thanks for coming out folks. God Bless & Goodnight” **]

THAT’s pretty much the underlying storyline they are trying to set-up, in my opinion.

Not bad. :smh: Not bad at all.

Dude you gave that so much clear concise thought flow and creative arc and real character development...

YOU KNOW DC Ain't Try To Hear ALL THAT Shit right?

a movie is 100x more complicated... so I understand his issues

But he made 2 legitimate classics...Clerks and chasing amy

And to be fair mall rats and that religious movie didn't suck.

Matter of fact that John Goodman religious movie with the bad ending? That was so good I didn't believe it was him the first hour was excellent...the performances damn near award worthy then he had to Kevin Smith it up.

So basically Justice League 1 is going to be all about this.

Man I'm tripping out that the rant on this movie has gone on for 23 fucking pages.... 5 more pages and this will be in Ock territory.

Dude isn't dead so why does it matter?
They should have saved all that "Superman is dead" crap for his 2nd solo film. It's like they pushed fast forward in this film. They should have had him fight Doomsday in the next Superman film. Too many story lines in one. Makes Superman look like a sucka. He gets out smarted and gets the shit kicked out of him by a mere human "Bruce Wayne". Then, later gets deaded by Doomsday. He had help and STILL DIED lol

you serious?
why waste superman's best story so soon with no build up...they basically ruined his AND doomsday's story for nothing. Doomsday has ties to darksied, braniac and the lantern corp
the wasted all that in about 15 mins of an awful movie
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOU! That's what I basically meant in my reply to "boi".

Wait

Since when does batman have sand nighas on the payroll?

This nigga was in the fucking wastelands of mad max.

How in thee fuck did he get caught up in a double cross?

What was the fucking purpose of those flying alien bad n shit

He snapping necks and shit

Omg

My blood pressure is building.

I'm bout to watch dark knight rises

Bane entertains me thoroughly

i agree...the batman dream shit....smh.... 45 minutes right there...lol
Them fuckas were bullettiming all kinds of unnecessary shot too. Watching shells from the 21 gun salute while my 6 year old was fast asleep was laughable. Also travel times from point to point was slow as hell. The only redeeming quality of the movie is that I had free tickets.
