I believe Chalky actually knew the shot was coming. But the Doc having his daughter as a hostage was totally unexpected. He had no way to contact his family and didn't even know his daughter had cancelled the wedding he was negotiating with the Doc to be a part of. Once the shot missed, it was one of the Doc's men who got Richard in the rafters. He actually could have gotten away unharmed but was trying to finish the job which at the point was futile

That's the only way Chaulky would have stepped foot in the building even though it was "his" spot, he was severely out manned. To tell you the truth, I thought she would have already been sprayed in some crossfire within the club the week b4 with her wandering into her Pops business without him knowing exactly where she was;
Richard has probably never missed since he put himself in that Sniper's mentality so the shock alone of him having the shakes & his subconscious manifesting through his actions was enough to 'kill' him;
there was never any room for more than one shot from where he was @ so of course any hesitation, stalling & giving his position away would spell the end of & for him;
quite poetic & meaningful but the dropping of Chaulky's daughter (even though I was expecting it) took the air out of the room for me more than anything else which was the price he paid for fucking with Bluetic along with everything else of value he lost while the whole town had to bear witness to it.
