I dont mix mbuna with tanganikians
I have a mbuna tank with a huge ass bumblebee a kenyi, johani aurautus and some yellow labs ill take a vid and pics later

The mbuna are to agressive and the groups have diff diets
The mbuna cant eat as much protien as the tangs or they get bloat

Also you have south americans in there
How big are the jewels? They dont eat the rest of your fish?

Great thread! I just got a 29 gallon freshwater tank & currently have an albino pleco, dark tail pleco, small catfish & 3 giant Danios to cycle my tank with. Also have 2 live plants to assist with cycling & a castle that the catfish likes chilling in when I have the lights on. I feed them only once a day & give my bottom feeders algae wafers. I'm feening to get some more fish to add to the tank but know I gotta wait & let the good bacteria build up as I've only had my tank for a little over a week

Very nice clean tank. That mumba Gonne harass the fuck outta your other fish though.

thanks man
they are all mbuna, they been in that tank together 1 1/2 years now together.
they beat each other up all the time, you cant prevent it
the aurautus is the boss tho, the bumblebee will do some bullying, but when the aurautus is ready to kick ass EVERYONE must fall in line!
i started out with like 12 small fish now im down to 5 big ones
survival of the fittest i guess

Mbuna...I was trying to remember the spelling. Yeah I've owned over 100 fish in the past 7-8yrs. My last one died last week. I'm retiring from the hobby. I've owned both those mbunas, the bumble bee can get pretty big. Very fun fish to watch.

The mbuna are aggressive but so far everythings is even out amongst them.My eye-biter and male jewel keeps everything calm.
No south americans and my jewel aren't that big and they usually stick with each other(3 of them)

I'm having issues with the ammonia levels in my tank and I have a feeling it's due to the chlorine in my tap water. I use Prime, Stability and other solutions in my water to dechlorinate my tank but water changes are becoming a challenge now since it's putting my fish into shock. Any of y'all ever encounter this? What are y'all using for your water changes?

I am getting one of these guys, Blue Jack Dempseys and I have a Green Terror. These guys look great and have some nice size

or you can go with live plants.....there is lots of DIY CO2 and lighting if you wanna go that rout. I have both a Large South American Cichlid tank and planted tank that will have Angles and Discus

Chlorine is independant of your Ammonia. Any Chlorine remover will do. 50-70% water changes weekly until your tank settles. lightly rinse your filter cartridges. You gotta get your Bacteria going. don't put too many fish at this point and don't feed too much.

I think I have too many in the tank now. Mainly the blue platty's. I have 2 females & a male. Both bitches keep getting knocked up. First I saw 3 new fish appear and them mofos grew quick to be damn near the same size as my Neon Tetras. I went away this past weekend and come back to find 8 new fry swimming around near the substrate. They bout to turn my tank into section 8. I'm bout to get rid of them, the Neons, my Cory catfish and just keep my zebra danios and cosmic glow fish along with my albino pleco, otto cinclus catfish and assassin snails.

Do any of y'all use tap water going straight into the tank and then applying your chlorine removers when you do your fish changes or are you pre-treating the water and then applying it after siphoning the tank? Ultimately I'd like to maybe get something that attaches to my faucet & functions as a filter from tap to my tank.

i have a hose that runs the water straight from the tap
then i add the solution. no problems ever
honestly after the tank is established i don't think you even need the solution anymore, your only supposed to change like 15-20% i still use seachem prime tho
NOTHING else. all them other buffers and shit is a waste of money. i change the carbon every couple months and wash off the pads and put them shits right back in

this will not work for salt water

Aside from paying somebody to handle everything (food, water, tank cleaning), is there such a thing as a a no-hassle tank?

There are some low maintenance fish, require less water changes than others. Just go for you hardy fish. The larger tanks are less sensitve.

bought 4 Oscars in March of last year. they were 2 and a half inches long.
now all of them are a foot long. didnt think they'd grow this big this fuckin fast.

I am going to get into this hobby as well in a couple of months. I am new so I am going to start with small freshwater fish.

Zebra danios(peaceful)
Guppies(peaceful)
Sword Tails(peaceful)
White Mountain minnows(peaceful)
Kuhli loaches(great bottom feeders and peaceful)
Small Cory Cats(great bottom feeders and peaceful)
Female bettas(will buy them as female betta babies and get at least 5 they will not fight and less aggressive than male bettas)
Mollies(peaceful)
Platys(peaceful)
Rummy nose tetras(peaceful)
Rasboas(peaceful)
Dwarf gouramis(generally peaceful)

Also have some live plants, some type of shrimp, african dwarf frog, and assassin snails(eat pest snails and reproduce more slowly than other snails). Would even consider getting daphnia(water fleas) makes great live food for tropical fish. I may get a 1 gallon for raising water fleas. Water fleas can be found at any local pond.

I want to connect two maybe three 35 gallon long tanks with an aqua bridge so the fish can swim back and forth between tanks. Also I want one tank to have a 24/7 dimmed light while the other connected tank(s) will have a day/night cycle. The tanks will be stocked with live plants under water and above water with plenty of hiding spaces. Still thinking on what type of substrate to use sand or smooth gravel.

Aqua Bridge:

Here is a simple DIY model using PCV elbows and clear tubing

A more complex DIY using plexi-glass and aquarium silicone

Then keep a 20 tall with like 5 dwarf puffers and they will eat the rapid reproducing pest snails that the assassin snails don't get. Hopefully if I don't get pest snails then I will not need the dwarf puffer tank. Pest snails come from eggs on plants and if you get your plants from a local pond or even your pet store it may have pest stow-away snail eggs. Snails are good but they are pest because they multiply so damn fast.

Also I want to make sure I don't have dangerous stow aways like dragonfly larvae(will kill all your fish) and planaria worms(I hear they can harmful to molting shrimp)

Recently scored a 90Gal bow front tank off of Craigslist. Currently have 3 breeds of rainbow fish, 4 Denison Barbs, 4 Cory Catfish & some live plants. Gonna add some more rainbow fish to really have the tank filled with color

I gotta replace the led light strip with one specifically made for plants. I have a feeling the browning of my leaves are due to insufficient light source nutrients. I'm thinking of getting the Fluval Bluetooth joint but that shit is damn near $200

The eletric blue cichlids are aggressive and if you put them in the tank together make sure that the green terror is bigger than the Jack Dempsey and a female if not you will have one beating the hell out of the other.Oh and live plants, the Green Terror will destroy it for fun and anything else so give em lots of hiding places but the plants aren't going to last especially after it gets bigger.
