Pixar's 'Soul' is getting rave reviews, but it left me cringing up until the very last minute

  • While the animation and music in the film are beautiful, the studio's first film with a Black lead film makes some questionable creative choices.
  • The strangest creative choice is that, at one point, a soul (voiced by Tina Fey), is placed in Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a Black middle school music teacher.
  • Joe's moment to shine often gets muted by that overly chatty, opinionated, and loud-mouthed soul who doesn't care about life.
  • The movie should have leaned into Joe and his family instead of using a "soul," voiced by a white actress, to help him on his journey.
  • "Soul," which skipped its original theatrical release due to the pandemic, is available now on Disney Plus.

Not sure if I saw it that way...
I thought Joe's relationship with himself, his family and neighborhood were well addressed. His body switch happened because of his tunnel vision and impatience which led to his self discovery and ultimately satisfaction with his lot in life.

I agree with you, it seems like people are digging and trying to find something to dislike about the film. The film was very good in my opinion.

adults might like it, kids will find it boring.
I kinda agree...there wasn't much adventure slapstick things happening... and the lost soul stuff was more scary than adventureful. Anyone letting kids younger than 8 watch it would probably not pick up on the deeper messages and themes.

One thing about Pixar movies is they are good at giving you a headache.

You can’t watch them and try to apply reality into them.

I remember when “Cars” came out and I got the DVD for my two sons who were toddlers at the time. They loved that movie and would watch it 2 or 3 times a day.

I would watch with them and my brain would go into overdrive trying to understand where the damn Cars came from and how the fuck they built there world with no hands, arms or legs.

Complete mindfuck!

HaHa!!!

All I know is that before Up and Coco (both by Pixar) no one has been "chopping onions" around me at an Animated movie since like an American Tail, and I was like 5 or 6 when i watched that movie...lol...so if it's a "deep" movie..like that..im good..lol

I teared up. The mother scene and the part about getting really close to your dreams and never making it hits home....
