49ers look to trade Alex Smith; Chiefs, Cardinals loom as possible destinations
HTML:
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--49ers-look-to-trade-alex-smith--chiefs--cardinals-loom-as-possible-destinations-014704869.html

INDIANAPOLIS – As San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh was trying to sell reporters on the idea that the 49ers could keep quarterback Alex Smith, other members of his organization were quite clear about what is going to happen to Smith as they prepared to sign players.

The 49ers will pursue a trade for Alex Smith rather than release him. (USA Today Sports)Smith is going to get traded and probably sooner than later.

As San Francisco front-office representatives met with several agents to gauge the free-agent market on Friday at the NFL scouting combine, there was a common theme to their discussions.

Don't worry, we'll have plenty of money once we trade Smith. The 49ers spent much of the day checking with agents on the upcoming cornerback market, which will feature Aqib Talib, Leodis McKelvin, Greg Toler, Cary Williams, Sean Smith, Derek Cox, Quentin Jammer, Dominique Rogers-Cromartie and Michael Jenkins. Several of those players figure to cost in the area of $8 million to $9 million per year as the 49ers search for a No. 1 cornerback.

That more clandestine message was being delivered even as Harbaugh tried to say Smith might be staying.

"I think the main thing is that Alex is an excellent football player," Harbaugh said. "Alex is really playing the best football of his career the last two years. We think we got the best quarterback situation in the National Football League, feel strongly about that. Again, that'll be a process that plays out. Alex Smith continuing to be a 49er or if a trade occurs in the next weeks or months. Those are the two possibilities, most likely possibilities."

Harbaugh then made it pretty clear that Smith won't simply be released as the 49ers deal with the $8.5 million he is owed this season in base salary and bonus.

"That's unlikely," Harbaugh said.

It's also equally unlikely that the 49ers will go into next season with the most expensive backup quarterback in NFL history (at least going in). While Smith has played the role of good soldier since losing his job midway through last season to Colin Kaepernick, those close to him have made it clear that he won't be so abiding if the 49ers don't work something out quickly.

That means that the better question is where Smith will end up. Although one source said it's far too early to guess, Kansas City appears to be the most interested team. The Chiefs are unlikely to use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback this year because none of the top ones – such as Geno Smith and Matt Barkley – appear to be worth it. Several head coaches and offensive coordinators this week said they wouldn't be surprised if no quarterback were selected in the first round this year.

"I don't see a single guy that I would feel confident about doing that with," an NFC offensive coordinator said. "Maybe you get into the 20s and, depending on your situation, you take a chance on one. But none of these guys look like sure-fire starters. Good players? Sure, but nobody who looks like some of the guys we have seen the past two years."

All of that means that teams looking for quarterbacks, such as Kansas City and Arizona, will be far more tempted to go the veteran route and trade for Smith.

Alex Smith rumors: Jason LaCanfora reports deal to unnamed team 'effectively complete'

Jason LaCanfora just tweeted out that the San Francisco 49ers are telling other teams that a deal for Alex Smith is "effectively complete." He did not know the second team, but he felt the Chiefs and Jaguars made some measure of sense. The Chiefs emerged as the leading candidate in recent days, although the market could very well have included the Jaguars, Cardinals, Browns, Bills, Raiders, Jets and others.

Alex Smith Trade Rumor Has Been Debunked

Late last night, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that a trade was in place for 49ers backup quarterback Alex Smith. No destination was mentioned as nothing official can be announced until the beginning of the new league year on March 12.

However, less than 24 hours later, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee has debunked any trade rumors:

Matt Barrows @mattbarrows

With the caveat that everyone fibs at this time of the year: I'm told the #49ers do not have a trade deal in place for Alex Smith.

Which just goes to show that around the start of free agency, smokescreens and lies begin as agents and sources try to drum up news that only helps their client. Without question, the fabricated rumor that was passed along to La Canfora was nothing but a ploy to help sweeten a deal for the 49ers.

For example, if San Francisco were to say they had a deal in place for Smith in exchange for a fifth-round pick, they were hoping someone would call the 49ers and say, "I want Smith, but I'm willing to give you a fourth-round pick for him instead."

It's no surprise that this type of stuff goes on, the NFL is ultra competitive. Rumors and such also teach us the lesson that we should be skeptical until there is truly a deal in place and all parties have signed on the dotted line. Quote, unquote "trusted sources" can not always be trusted either. Just think about how often we hear "trusted sources" divulging false info.

So, it's safe to say the 49ers are still shopping No. 11. There's no official word as to what they are hoping to get for the veteran quarterback, yet in all likelihood, they will be looking to take the best offer that comes their way. Even if is a sixth-round pick.

San Francisco 49ers: Possible targets with the No. 31 pick

The 49ers hold the rights to the No. 31 pick in the 2013 NFL draft, which will take April 25-27. As the scouting combine continues in Indianapolis, here is a list of 10 potential players the 49ers might target with their first-round pick:

Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford

Delanie Walker is a free agent, coach Jim Harbaugh loves tight ends and coached Ertz in college. Vernon Davis remains the primary receiving tight end, but Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman can't ever have enough tight ends. Ertz is on the 49ers radar, even if it means trading up.

DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama

Regarded as the top cornerback

in the draft. He is talented enough to excel in man-to-man coverage. The 49ers discovered during their postseason run that they need more help at cornerback, even if it means packaging several picks to move up and get a player of Milliner's caliber.

Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington

His stock soared after a superb showing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile in January. Like Milliner, Trufant is regarded as an all-around cornerback that has the ability to step in right away and make a significant contribution.

Robert Woods, WR, USC

He is a polished receiver that likely won't need much time to adapt to the NFL. His stock slipped as a
result of an injury-plagued 2012 season. Still, he is the kind of receiver that can step in and help out from the outset. His production was eye-opening at times in college.

Keenan Allen, WR, Cal

His production from 2011 to 2012 dropped quite a bit. However, he still is viewed as the top receiver prospect in this year's draft class. His size - 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds - speed and hands make him a prized target.

Cordarelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee

He is a raw player that piqued the interest of NFL teams with a breakout season in 2012. He is the kind of player that figures to be available at the end of the first round, which places him in the crosshairs of the 49ers.

Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State

Rhodes, 6-2 and 215, has impressive size and strength for a cornerback. That is something the 49ers will take into account, playing in a division that features WR Larry Fitzgerald.

Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

He held up well in the rugged SEC and showed that he is a legitimate NFL prospect. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns against Tim Tebow as a freshman. Oh, and he also is an accomplished punt returner, something the 49ers might need if Ginn Jr. isn't re-signed.

Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas

He showed that he is equally adept playing against the run and the pass during a solid collegiate career. He also is an outstanding special teams player, which boosts his value.

Jonathan Hankins, NT, Ohio State

Star Lotulelei figures to be long gone by the time the 49ers make their first selection. Therefore, their sights are on Hankins, the next-best nose tackle prospect. He holds up very well against the run and also is a consistently disruptive force against the pass.

2013 NFL Draft: 49ers prospect meetings to date

NFL Combine is a great opportunity for teams to get some one-on-one time with draft prospects, but it is not the only time for this. Aside from Pro Days and individual workouts in March and April, teams have had a chance to meet with prospects dating all the way back to the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl.

The folks at Walter Football have put together a list of reported meetings between prospects and teams. Here are the players they have connected to the 49ers. EW is East-West game, SR is Senior Bowl and COM is Combine:

Jeff Baca, OL, UCLA (EW)
Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois (EW)
Gerald Hodges, LB, Penn State (EW)
Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M, (COM)
Zach Line, RB, SMU (EW)
Sio Moore, LB, Connecticut (EW)
Zeke Motta, S, Notre Dame (EW)
Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech (COM)
Phillip Thomas, DB, Fresno State (SR)
Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse (EW)
Melvin White, CB, Louisiana Lafayette (EW)

This list was updated on Monday, but is not all inclusive, as the 49ers have also met with Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen. Sheldon Richardson also indicated he met with the 49ers. If you know of any players not listed above, let me know in the comments. I would like to come up with an all-inclusive list of 49ers player meetings.

This list is not going to tell us everything we need to know, or even much of what we need to know. The 49ers are allowed to meet with a lot of players, and they will not draft most of them. We know a guy like Luke Joeckel will not be around when the 49ers pick. Furthermore, we know that even if the 49ers moved up to be in a position to draft Joeckel, he is not a guy they would be trading up to get based on their need. Yes they may look at best player available, but they simply would not trade up to draft Joeckel.

AP Source: 49ers to send Smith to KC

Alex Smith is headed to Kansas City, the first major acquisition by the Chiefs since Andy Reid took over as coach.

A person with knowledge of the trade told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Chiefs have agreed to deal for the 2005 top overall draft pick who lost his starting quarterback job in San Francisco to Colin Kaepernick last season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade does not become official until March 12, when the NFL's new business year begins.

Another person familiar with the deal said the 49ers will get a second-round draft pick in April, No. 34 overall, and a conditional pick in the 2014 draft.

Fox Sports first reported the deal.

Smith sustained a concussion Nov. 11 and Kaepernick played well in his place. Coach Jim Harbaugh stuck with him even when Smith got healthy, and Kaepernick led the 49ers to the NFC championship and a close loss to Baltimore in the Super Bowl.

The 28-year-old Smith struggled for most of his career in San Francisco, plagued as much by coaching and coordinator changes as by his own indecisiveness. But when Harbaugh became coach, Smith blossomed. He was among the league leaders in passer rating (104.1) with a 70.2 completion percentage when he was injured in a 24-24 tie against St. Louis.

Smith never started again for the 49ers, but now will replace Matt Cassel in Kansas City.

The Chiefs went 2-14 in 2012, earning the top pick in April's draft. But with
no standout quarterbacks coming out of college this year, they quickly turned to finding a veteran.

Reid was fired by Philadelphia after 14 highly successful seasons, although the Eagles went 4-12 last year. Kansas City made him the first coach hired to fill a vacancy in January—there were eight of them—and the Chiefs also fired general manager Scott Pioli.

Now Reid has found his quarterback, and Smith has found another starting job.

Kansas City also has Brady Quinn on the roster, and he started eight games last season, going 1-7.

The 49ers, meanwhile, will be searching for a veteran to back up Kaepernick, their second-round draft choice in 2011.

we'll have 15 total.

a couple from trades. pushed the total up excluding this newest one.

and then we're getting 3 comp picks in march
we can't trade those we have to use them.

but im thinking NOW with this deal

we could call the jets and say you need players and you're not gonna pay revis.
we'll give you a 2nd round this year and a 4th round this year and a conditional pick next year and you give us revis.

and essentially we would have traded alex smith for Darelle Revis :D

49ers reportedly “poised” to make a run at Darrelle Revis

The trade sending quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City can’t be officially completed for a while yet, but that isn’t stopping people from talking about what they might be thinking about doing next.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports via a pair of sources that the 49ers have discussed the possibility of trading for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and that they are “poised” to make a run at trading for him even if it is just for one year. Cornerback was as weak a spot as there was on the NFC champs last season so there’s probably not much need to explain why the prospect of acquiring Revis would be appealing.

The Niners certainly have the ammunition for it. Assuming the Chiefs trade goes through, they’ll have 12 draft picks with three more selections (which can’t be traded) expected through the compensatory system. There aren’t 15 roster spots up for grabs on the 49ers so it makes sense to leverage those picks for quality instead of quantity. With the Chiefs second-round pick, the 49ers would have five of the first 93 picks in the draft and that would be an obvious starting point in any Revis trade.

It’s all speculative at this point, but the bounty of picks and space for Revis in San Francisco mean we’ll probably be hearing more on this front.

NFL free agents 2013: Ravens could pursue Ricky Jean Francois

It is safe to say a nice little market could be developing for San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois. Reports out of Baltimore indicate the Ravens are interested in pursuing the 49ers utility defensive lineman. Aaron Wilson is reporting the Ravens indicated after the Super Bowl that they were looking to upgrade the nose guard position. A league source told him that the Ravens view RJF as one such option.

This adds the Ravens to a list that includes the Packers, and might include the Eagles. Although RJF has only had a few injury replacement starts in his career, several teams are likely intrigued by his versatility. RJF is listed as a defensive tackle, but can play all three positions on the line. He filled in for Isaac Sopoaga when Ice was hurt. He filled in for Ray McDonald when he was hurt. And of course we saw him get extensive playing time this past season when Justin Smith went down with his triceps injury late in the season.

Matt Maiocco has subsequently reported that the 49ers and RJF have had no movement in working toward a contract extension. I have to think with the rumors heating up, RJF wants to test the market and potentially move the needle on his price. The 49ers have no been a team that is willing to get into bidding wars, so if it starts moving north, this might bethe end of the PBJ dance in San Francisco.

mixed feelings. he filled in ok for others but he was a huge drop off for justin smith. and if he wants to break the bank he can do that elsewhere. don't need to do that for a backup and don't need to do that when we have 15 picks in the draft and could possibly draft a player better than him already right now.

our draft history from 05-12

with notes from ninersnation

Say what you want about taking Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers No. 1 overall in 2005, but the 49ers have been one of the NFL's best drafting teams since, and it's the foundational reason why the team is where it is today.

Let's run down those drafts, one by one:

2005: Smith, center Davis Baas, running back Gore, guard/tackle Adam Snyder. Smith revived his career late, and led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game in 2012. Baas and Snyder have been starters in the NFL, even if both have moved on to other teams. Gore remains the backbone of the 49ers' running game.
2006: Tight end Vernon Davis, linebacker Manny Lawson, fullback Michael Robinson and tight end Delanie Walker. Davis is a top-5 NFL tight end, and Walker is the perfect secondary complement at the position. Lawson was a disappointment in San Francisco but has continued on a successful NFL career elsewhere. Robinson starts for the Seattle Seahawks.
2007: Linebacker Patrick Willis, tackle Joe Staley, defensive end Ray McDonald, safety Dashon Goldson, cornerback Tarell Brown. Jackpot. Willis, Staley and Goldson are All-Pros, McDonald is one of the more underrated 3-4 defensive ends, and Brown started in the Super Bowl. Can't ask for much more out of a draft class.
2008: The one letdown year. Kentwan Balmer was a bust, and Chilo Rachal moved on after a brief stint starting at right guard.
2009: Michael Crabtree. Mostly a one-man class, but Crabtree's emergence as a No. 1 receiver sparked the 49ers' late surge in 2012. His stock is trending up.
2010: Offensive tackle Anthony Davis, guard Mike Iupati, safety Taylor Mays and linebacker NaVorro Bowman. Believe it or not, all eight players in this class ended 2012 on an active NFL roster. Davis, Iupati and Bowman are all elite players at their position. Another really, really good class.
2011: Linebacker Aldon Smith, quarterback Colin Kaepernick, cornerback Chris Culliver, running back Kendall Hunter and fullback Bruce Miller. Drafting an elite pass-rusher and the one of the game's up-and-coming quarterbacks back to back is as good as it gets. Culliver, Hunter and Miller are each important role players.
2012: Running back LaMichael James. First-round receiver A.J. Jenkins needed a year to marinate, so there's no need to provide comment there. James is the gem, and his speed and agility brought another element to the 49ers' read-option offense.

Should the San Francisco 49ers Trade for Darrelle Revis

once again, the San Francisco 49ers are in the spotlight.

Last week, it was the news that San Francisco was going to trade its long-time-starter-turned backup quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for more draft picks.

This week, the 49ers again are in the news but this time, they are being discussed as one of the top teams interested in New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.

For the Jets, moving Revis makes plenty of sense. New York is coming off an abysmal 6-10 season which was filled with injury, disappointment and controversy. The Jets have plenty of needs to address this offseason if they look to improve in the NFC East in the upcoming year. In an article by Newsday's Bob Glauber, former NFL receiver Keyshawn Johnson stated that, since the Jets have so many holes, moving Revis makes perfect sense.

I think it's a smart move if they do move him and get value...He's not going to win any games for you. He's a defensive back who will shut down the top receiver, but the ball is not in his hands. The Jets need more than a top corner. They need some pieces. If he gives them the value to get those pieces, then move him. (via nfl.com)

Revis is set to make $6 million in the final year of his contract and is likely to seek around $16 million per year when he becomes a free agent in 2014 (espn.com). If the Jets are able to move him, the money saved could be used on shoring up some of their own shortcomings.

Signs point to the Jets doing just that. New York Daily News columnist Manish Mehta and CBS Sports columnist Jason La Canfora have both indicated that Revis shall be traded and soon.
Hi-res-130192566_crop_exact Darrelle Revis had four interceptions and 41 tackles in 2011.
Nick Laham/Getty Images

For Revis, a pending trade seems bittersweet. The four-time Pro Bowler and 2009 AFC Defensive Player of the Year indicated his frustration at being shopped by the Jets this offseason. Revis stated, “This definitely hit home especially being one of the best players out there and come to find out you’re getting shopped. It really hits home" (via nydailynews.com).

He did state in the same interview that playing for the 49ers would be "awesome."

In addition to the 49ers, the Falcons, Colts, Buccaneers and Chiefs have also been rumored to have interest in Revis (cbssports.com).

Yet, for the 49ers, the move seems to make the most sense. For starters, San Francisco's lone defensive liability in 2012 was its backfield, which was exposed during their Super Bowl run. 49ers cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and Chris Culliver struggled in the postseason, leading to some impressive quarterbacking numbers by Atlanta's Matt Ryan and Baltimore's Joe Flacco. If there was an area that needed help, San Francisco's secondary would be it.

Furthermore, the 49ers have 15 draft picks going into the NFL draft this year. While San Francisco could make some upgrades and add depth through the draft, there certainly are not 15 holes to fill. Thus, packaging some of those draft picks in exchange for a player who would have an immediate impact would seem both likely and beneficial.

Of course, there is substantial risk in the trade. Revis suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins and missed the rest of the regular season. Before the injury, Revis was one of the best shut-down corners in the game. After the injury and recovery, it is difficult to determine how effective he will be.
Hi-res-6605596_crop_exact Darrelle Revis tore his ACL in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins, creating concerns about his effectiveness in 2013.
Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

It would be risky for the 49ers to make a trade considering the unknowns, but considering San Francisco's current roster, which is already stacked with talent along with the large number of draft picks they have, the risk may be worth the reward.

Bay Area News Group columnist Monte Poole feels that the 49ers need to make a big trade with all those draft picks and feels that Revis might be the best option (via mercurynews.com):

With their pockets stuffed with as many as 15 picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Niners can afford to get crazy. If there is a time to take a risk, it is now. If there is a guy worth the risk, it is Revis.

Assuming that the 49ers are able to make the trade, what would it spell for their salary cap and what would it mean for some of their current free agents hoping to re-sign with the team, most notably safety Dashon Goldson?

The 49ers are currently pressed up against the salary cap. Trading Alex Smith, along with potential releases of kicker David Akers and linebacker Parys Haralson will free up some cap space. Goldson remains the biggest priority for the 49ers. He has also mentioned that he would love to see something work out with the 49ers (via csnbayarea.com). San Francisco did not use its franchise tag on Goldson and have indicated that they want him back.

Goldson made over $6 million in 2012, and given his performance during the season, he is likely to command a large contract in 2013 (spotrac.com). Could the 49ers afford both Goldson and Revis? That is a difficult question to answer.
Where does Darrelle Revis end up in 2013?
NY Jets SF 49ers Atlanta Falcons Indianapolis Colts Other Team Submit Vote vote to see results

Whether or not San Francisco can retain Goldson and trade for Revis, the 49ers camp has revealed very little about its intentions.

According to CSN Bay Area analyst Ray Ratto, the potential trade seems to be similar to the 49ers interest in Peyton Manning a year ago: a lot of hype and rumors that fail to amount to much of anything. He indicates that while the deal may seem to be a no-brainer, fans should not be surprised if the rumor fails to amount to anything (csnbayarea.com).

Indeed the 49ers have not shown much of their hand. They have reason not to. With other teams like the Falcons potentially in the market, the Jets are in a great position to evaluate the best package offered. Given the steep contract Revis has, along with his injury, the 49ers may be looking elsewhere.

ESPN writer Chris Mortensen reported a source stating that San Francisco has almost no interest in Revis, citing that the contract issues along with the package it would take to get him might be too much for the 49ers to bear. Revis' injury may also be a factor.

The potential trade seems to be a high-risk, high-reward scenario for the 49ers. They need help at cornerback and Revis is out there. San Francisco has all those draft picks too, and it seems unlikely that they would use all of them solely on the upcoming draft.

Darrelle Revis roaming the 49ers secondary would be a huge addition if he returns to his pre-injury form. For San Francisco, already poised on another return to the Super Bowl, all that risk may be worth the high reward.

you cannot put him on a specific man unless its an underneath route.

he's best at run support and db support.

so stopping the run, breaking up crossing routes, covering and coming in to deflect passes sometime intercept them he can do that.

covering someone deep by himself?

no bueno

Relax! No need to get testy just kicking the tires seeing whats what.

 i would've just left it at training camp if i was testy

Also, Who the HELL is ya'll back-up QB?

we have 2 currently both drafted by jim as projects we might get another in the 5th round.

the thing about having a qb guru is im not worried about that. he's proven he can make quarterbacks and he's proven he knows what he's doing drafting qb's so whoever he feels will be the #2 whether it be someone current or bringing in a vet i trust it totally.

the misconception out there is that we better have one cause kaepernick is a running qb and running qb's get injured faster and we'll need one.

colin is NOT a running qb. the pistol is but a formation in the offense like single back and shotgun. its no the BASE of the offense like say in washington or carolina. HUGE difference.

we ran it selectively and only when there was an advantage.

green bay sucked at it. so he ran it up.
atlanta prepped for it so we didn't run him we just used their keying on him to open up lanes for the rb's

baltimore tries to stop it but couldn't he had 300 yard passing 2 100 yard receivers and a 100 yard rusher.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000149401/article/report-anquan-boldin-to-be-traded-to-san-francisco-49ers
Seeking salary-cap relief, the Baltimore Ravens desperately want Anquan Boldin to accept a $2 million reduction in pay for the 2013 season. A man of principle, Boldin is sticking to his guns about playing under the contract he originally signed.

With both sides at a standstill, general manager Ozzie Newsome has come up with a solution that could strengthen a fierce competitor while leaving his team worse off in the long run. NFL.com's Albert Breer reported Monday, citing a Ravens source, that Boldin will be traded to the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round draft pick.

The Baltimore Sun first reported the trade. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the trade is contingent on Boldin -- currently on an African mission -- passing a physical.

Three years ago, Newsome netted Boldin and a fifth-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a third- and fourth-round pick. Playoff hero or no, Newsome did well to collect a draft pick for a player about to enter the decline phase of his career. Boldin wasn't going to see his $6 million salary, in which case the Ravens would have simply released him on Tuesday.

http://www.ninersnation.com/2013/3/11/4092366/colin-kaepernick-pistol-jim-mastro

Mastro currently coaches at Washington State, but was an assistant under Chris Ault at Nevada. Ault is credited with creating the Pistol, and there has been a lot of talk about Greg Roman working with him to learn more about the Pistol. Mastro worked with Ault during the development process and likely knows plenty about the offense. I suspect Mike Leach has picked his brain quite a bit since hiring him at WSU.

Plenty of NFL coaches will spend a sizable chunk of this offseason trying to figure out how to defend the various wrinkles of the 49ers offense. Whether it be The Pistol formation, the read option plays, or an assortment of other parts of the scheme, it will be a busy offseason for NFL coaches.
