and the honey badger dream team to play for would be the 49ers

im happy

There has been plenty of chatter here about former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, and Honey Badger's recent comments will probably not quell that support. Mathieu was in LA on Tuesday to participate in ESPN's "Sports Science" segment. While waiting for his bags at LAX, TMZ cameras caught up with him. Check out the video above.

In the video, Mathieu talks about the Combine and how he is getting ready for the next level, as well as the support he has received. The most pertinent comments came when he was asked who his dream team was (thinking as a kid and as a fan) coming out of the draft. He was quick to point to the 49ers as the team he would love to play for coming out of the draft.

http://www.ninersnation.com/2013/3/15/4110230/aldon-smith-surgery-torn-labrum-injury-49ers

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport just reported that three weeks ago, Aldon Smith underwent surgery for a torn labrum suffered during the 2012 season. There is no timetable on his return, but Rapoport said Smith was recently seen without a brace.

As for when the injury occurred? Well, as Rapoport pointed out, Aldon was on the 49ers injury report starting in Week 12 with a shoulder injury. He was listed as probable through the end of the season and the playoffs with that shoulder injury. The 49ers likely will not be confirming any details on this, but one has to imagine that labrum was an issue during this period. I suppose he could have aggravated a smaller injury, but either way, he was playing hurt.

Aldon put together 19.5 sacks on the season, with all of them coming through December 9. If the labrum was torn before Week 12, that means he grabbed at least 4.5 sacks once injured. We discussed his decline over the close of the season, and Justin Smith's injury was always brought up. Now it is possible a combination of Justin Smith's injury AND Aldon Smith's own injury were the cause of Aldon's decline in sacks.

Whatever the case, this would seem to indicate the right side of the 49ers defensive front made it to the Super Bowl basically with one arm apiece.

This is for anyone fronting on crabtree

Few can deny that Michael Crabtree had a great season in 2012, spilling over into 2013 for the post-season, including an excellent performance in an otherwise disappointing Super Bowl. I'm actually in favor of extending his contract as soon as possible, in fact, before he duplicates or exceeds last season's numbers and seeks an exorbitant amount of money...both of which I think are very likely to happen.

Still some may not consider Crabtree a top-flight NFL wide receiver. They'll cite his lack of deep speed, or the fact that he's not as tall as an Andre Johnson, etc. But what almost everyone knows about the NFL is that first downs and touchdowns are what matter most. If you can't keep the chains moving, or score points, there's no way you'll go far in this league.

That's why ProFootballFocus.com's recent post on wide receivers who excel at first down and/or touchdown productivity (expressed as 1DTD per route run) is so telling of how good Crabtree is. This isn't a subjective stat, either. It's simply dividing the number of passing routes run by how many catches for a first down or touchdown a receiver had. The result should be read as: receiver had a first down or touchdown every X.X routes he ran.

Keep in mind this is routes, not catches. Some of his routes the ball goes to another player, there is a sack, etc. It really speaks to productivity because it looks at every passing play in which the receiver was on the field whatsoever. It also goes beyond catches per route run because catching a 1 yard pass every time wouldn't help the team much.

So on to the results, which have Crabtree as the NFL's fourth best in 1DTD/route run. Crabtree had 57 first downs or touchdowns in 433 routes he ran, good for 13.16%. Another way of looking at it is that he got a first down or touchdown every 7.6 routes he ran, which again, includes passes that didn't even go his way, or were never thrown due to a sack.

49ers acquire Colt McCoy from Browns
Colt McCoy has been on the outs with the Browns all offseason, and trade rumors have been circulating the last few weeks. According to LaCanfora, the deal is done. I have to say that a late round pick for Colt McCoy strikes me as a good use of the plethora of picks.

While McCoy has had more downs than ups, he is coming into a pretty ideal situation. There is pretty much zero pressure on him, other than dueling with Scott Tolzien for clipboard duty. He's not a Colin Kaepernick scrambler by any stretch, but he does have some decent wheels, finishing third all time in rushing by Texas quarterbacks. That is not exactly a ringing endorsement, but the team can still run some read option if he ends up on the field.

This will provide a solid competition for the number two spot, and I think provide solid enough depth behind Kaepernick. Considering Kap is not going anywhere as the starter, the 49ers have a manageable backup situation. I do think they sign one more quarterback in undrafted free agency, but otherwise, the QB depth chart is filling up fairly well.

Nnamdi Asomugha joins Niners

AN FRANCISCO -- Free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha reached agreement on a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday that could pay him as much as $3 million this year.

Asomugha's representative, Ben Dogra, said Asomugha is expected to sign his new deal Wednesday. He was busy taking high school students around his native Bay Area on Tuesday in an effort to show them their future options and college choices.

Sando: Asomugha Must Earn It

San Francisco figures to get the best out of Nnamdi Asomugha, the question is how much is left in the cornerback's tank, Mike Sando writes. Blog

The contract has no guaranteed money. Asomugha is due to earn a base package of $1.35 million with salary and bonuses, and could make an additional $1.65 million in incentives for playing time, awards such as the Pro Bowl and reaching the playoffs.

"He's excited to be a 49er and feels it's a great football team, and he's returning home," Dogra said in a phone interview. "It's such a unique set of circumstances that he's coming back. It's not about the money for him. He wants to play for a winner. He had a very good visit with them 10 days ago and again over the weekend. He thinks they have a great chance to win a Super Bowl and he wants to be part of it. He has a chip on his shoulder, in a good way."

The former All-Pro was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on March 12 after two disappointing seasons -- and now he is ready to help the 49ers return to the Super Bowl and win after losing 34-31 to the Ravens on Feb. 3 in New Orleans. Now, he gets another start right back where his football career began.

The 31-year-old Asomugha spent his first eight NFL seasons (2003-2010) with the Oakland Raiders, who selected him 31st overall in the first round of the 2003 draft out of nearby California in Berkeley. He made three Pro Bowls during his time with Oakland.

Playing in the 49ers' talented secondary means more to Asomugha at this stage of his career than a hefty pay day. Before his release in Philadelphia on the first day of free agency last month, he had been scheduled to make $15 million this season, including $4 million guaranteed, after signing a $60 million, five-year deal with the Eagles in 2011.

"He believes in karma and timing," Dogra said. "He wants to show everybody it's not about the money for him. He wants to prove something. He could have walked away and retired. He wants to play for a winner. He's inspired. He wants to be part of a great team and take care of unfinished business from last year. He wants to end this on his terms. Hopefully, he can get a ring and stay happy."

Asomugha wouldn't comment until he signs the deal Wednesday morning, but a source close to him said he is "very excited" and "coming back with a chip on his shoulder."

It's possible that he won't be coming alone. His good friend and former Raiders and Packers safety Charles Woodson is still a free agent after visiting the 49ers last month, and the two would love to play together again.

"It's definitely still in play," the source said.

hope for you

The San Francisco 49ers are unquestionably one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl next season, but they helped ensure their long-term viability as well on Friday as they reportedly inked right tackle Anthony Davis to a contract extension. If nothing else, this move shows that the Niners front office is proactive and desperately wants to keep its core together moving forward. Davis may not receive as much publicity as players like Colin Kaepernick, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree or Vernon Davis, but he is a key cog that helps make the San Francisco offense go.

Davis is even overshadowed by some of his linemates such as Joe Staley and Mike Iupati, but he is as solid as they come. Since being selected 11th overall in the 2010 draft out of Rutgers, Davis has started all 48 regular-season games the 49ers have played in. That type of durability and consistency is extremely rare in the NFL these days.

The Niners offensive line as a whole is easily the best unit in the league because of its ability to remain healthy as well as its execution in a number of areas. The Niners are generally a run-first team due to a stable of good running backs as well as a mobile quarterback, but Davis and his linemates excel in pass blocking as well.

Davis is particularly important on the line because of the read-option. Kaepernick often keeps the ball and runs to his right, which puts a lot of pressure on Davis to hold up the pass-rusher and ensure that his quarterback remains upright. Davis was fantastic in that regard last year and figures to remain so moving forward.

The Niners are quickly becoming a model franchise in the NFL once again, and the re-signing of Davis certainly adds to their reputation.

http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2011/04/inside-the-49ers/pop-quiz-smith-had-first-test-before-49ers-drafted-him/

Before the 49ers shocked Aldon Smith by taking him with the No. 7 pick, they surprised him during his pre-draft visit to San Francisco.

Smith expected the Niners to test his football acumen. But not like this: How wide is a football field?

At his press conference in Santa Clara today, the former Missouri defensive end laughed when recalling the 50-question, do-you-know-your-football questionnaire.

He copped to missing a few questions on the pop quiz and was reminded of one in particular from a voice in the back of the room.

“Knute Rockne,” test administrator Jim Harbaugh said. “Who was Knute Rockne.”

Smith smiled at the 49ers coach.

“I forgot that one,” he said.

Not much news trickled out of Smith welcome meet-and-greet with the media, but the revelation of the questionnaire made it clear that Harbaugh is serious about wanting his players to have a passion for football. Right down to possessing knowledge of a Notre Dame coach who died 80 years ago.

By the way, a football field is 160 feet, or 53 1/3 yards, wide.

• Smith spoke with defensive end Justin Smith, a fellow Missouri star, on the practice field today. He also ran into safety Taylor Mays and linebacker Thaddeus Gibson in the weight room.

He said his visit hasn’t included any Xs-and-Os talk, but he hopes to leave with a playbook.

• Smith is racking up the frequent flyer miles. After flying in from New York today, he’ll travel back to New York tonight before heading to Missouri on Monday.

He was running on five hours of sleep today.

“It hasn’t all kicked in yet,” he said. “But I’m enjoying every bit of it.”

• Smith doesn’t know what number he’ll sport in the NFL. He wore 85 at Missouri because it was his number at Raytown Senior (Mo.) High, where he also played tight end.

• Just to clarify a point: Smith missed three games with a broken fibula last year, but actually had five weeks between games.

He suffered the injury Sept. 18 against San Diego State and returned to action on Oct. 23 against Oklahoma.

Feel like we could have gotten Reid around 22,but I guess it only matters who's willing to trade with you.

well that's 4 spots difference. the contract is going to be the same. and look at what we gave up to get the 18th pick as opposed to what the vikings gave up to get the 30th pick.

we made out like bandits again

6'2''
10'' hands
210lb safety who's known for hitting and can cover tight ends..

he's never going to be on a wr in our scheme and he specializes in tracking down the deep pass and stopping the run.

this is perfect once he gets the technique and system down our coaches are going to make him an immediate monster :dance:

Weaknesses
Gets overaggressive at times; will jump on short crossers, opening up the back half of the field, and overrun stretch plays to allow cutback lanes. Not a consistently powerful tackler, and will lunge and miss in the open field as he often fails to break down quickly.

everything mentioned as a weakness is something the coaches can change immediately.

and now his strengths

Strengths
Tall, long safety with a solid overall build that is still getting stronger. All-around defender who can play the run and pass. Flashes excellent closing speed, pummels receivers after the catch when coming downhill and can get into the backfield if smelling out the play after the snap. Has length and attitude to wrap up ballcarriers in the open field. Brings power into cut tackles, lowering his shoulder to stop running backs cold. Also lays the wood over the middle, putting a shoulder into their midsection. Gets physical with receivers attempting to block him in the run game. Has athleticism to handle tight ends in the passing game. Possesses the height, vertical and competitive nature to win jump balls. Good enough hands to take advantage of poor throws, will undercut receivers and can catch the ball away from his frame.

Transcripts from the conference call he had with the media tonight.

A LOT of players coming out and that will be coming out for the next couple of years Jim knows already cause he tried to recruit them, including Reid.

It also seems like this was the plan, so will keep an eye out on who we draft that's on our visit list and available at the time of our picks. Reid wasn't, and I think its because we didn't want anyone to know we were interested.

How does it feel to be a Niner?

"It feels amazing."

How would you describe your game to people who are unfamiliar with you?

"I think I'm a very cerebral player. I pride myself on knowing the defense. I pride myself on being able to get the guys lined up on the team, and being a great teammate and also doing my job. I'm very fortunate to be on such an incredible defense with the guys that are up there now, and I just can't wait to get to work."

The guy who was a starter here last year, S Dashon Goldson, had a reputation as a hitter, a big-hitter. How do you see yourself in that regard?

"I play like him, I'd say so. We play with some serious contact at LSU, so it's definitely something I have on my resume as a football player."

What does it tell you that the 49ers traded up to get you? They gave up something, moved up a lot of slots in the draft to claim you, how do you feel about that part of it?

"It's an honor. It's a crazy story, I was on the red carpet and a reporter asked me, it was a trivia question, she asked me who had the most picks in the draft and I said San Francisco. I knew the answer. I guess it's just a small world being that they picked me."

What was your interaction with them leading up to the draft?

"I dealt with coach Harbaugh at the combine when we had our formal meeting because he recruited me coming when I was coming out of high school. He poked fun at me for not going to Stanford and choosing LSU, but the story comes full circle that he ended up drafting me."

Was that the only time you had contact with him?

"Yeah at the combine and I had a couple of phone calls with him. I didn't take a visit to California, but I spoke with him at the combine."

Why didn't you visit the 49ers?

"I didn't have a choice. I guess the teams and the agents setup the visits. It just wasn't on my schedule."

Coming out high school why didn't you go to Stanford?

"Oh, I was born and raised in Louisiana. I bled purple and I still bleed purple and gold. It was a no-brainer for me to go to LSU."

Did coach Harbaugh recruit you pretty hard?

"Yeah, he did. He was actually the only school that recruited me as hard as LSU did. All of the other schools pretty much gave up knowing that I was an in-state guy, but it said a lot about how much he wanted me to go to Stanford and I appreciated it."

Did you come out and take a visit to Stanford?

"No, I didn't take any visits at all. I just took my visit to LSU."

Because of your connection with Harbaugh, did you watch the 49ers much the past year or two?

"I definitely watched them because they have an incredible defense. Some went to LSU, so that's something that I like to see and I'm very fortunate in being that I'll be playing with them."

What strikes you most overall about that defense?

"How many guys are just phenomenal players. I mean you name it and they're the reason they got to the Super Bowl. As the saying goes, defense wins championships. They didn't win it this past year, but I look forward to getting to California and helping them get back to the Super Bowl."

Coach Harbaugh just told the team website that your mom, this is where she wanted you to go too. Can you elaborate on that a little bit?

"Yeah, my mom works in the Bay Area, San Jose. So, she's a traveling nurse. She's a registered nurse and she's been going back and forth to California since I was in middle school. So, that's another reason why I kind of kept an eye on the team because my mom has been there for so long. So, it's a small world."

What is her name?

"Sharon."

When Harbaugh was recruiting you out of high school, did he come ever visit you in Louisiana?

"No, I don't think he did. The recruiting coordinator came and visited me a couple of times in high school, and I talked to him on the phone a bunch."

Was that your daughter you brought on stage when you went to shake NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's hand tonight?

"Yes."

And how old is she?

"She's three. She'll be four in June."

How has that been, just balancing fatherhood and trying to prepare for the NFL?

"It's been tough. It's been a long time coming. But at the same time, it's been such a blessing. She's the reason I am the way I am today, along with the way I was raised. The game of football has changed for me. It was a personal goal at first, but now it's become a way to provide for my family. It's a way to provide for my daughter. I'm just ecstatic that I can do that."

Did the 49ers tell you they were going to draft you if they had a chance?

"They told me they'd love to have me. They didn't tell me straight out that they would draft me because the draft is a big chess game. You never know what happens until it does. I'm just fortunate and ecstatic to be with this team."

How many teams told you something like that?

"A lot of them, but I definitely felt a good vibe from them when I talked to them. They a guy named [assistant secondary coach] Greg Jackson who wasn't too bad at his days at LSU. So. it'll be fun working with him."

What do you know about the other guys in the secondary on the 49ers?

"I know they're a great group, hard-hitting safeties, great cover corners. I just can't wait to get to work with those guys."

What's the tallest receiver you've covered in college?

"The tallest? Probably 6-4. There's a guy at [Texas] A&M, and my freshman year there they had two really tall receivers. [Atlanta Falcons WR] Julio [Jones] was at ‘Bama [Alabama] my freshman year as well."

And what's your daughter's name?

"LeiLani."

Large Bills,
Who do you think we're going to grab with these next 2 picks? Dline and wr?

i only pay attention to the niner specific reporters/mocks/ etc.

and they feel that we're going to take tank or jessie

and then probably a db or wr.

we have 3 picks today. i'd love to grab the best d-lineman available. and then draft the next best d lineman available and then take the honey badger.
