49ers

Before the game, I was real excited about Quinton Patton. Everything I have read about him made me think he was going to be a player. Buying his own ticket and showing up early after he got drafted really made me feel like he gets it. Kudos to the coaching staff for having him run routes after breaking his hand, he looked like he knew what he was doing out there and had himself a game.

Jim was glowing when talking about Patton.

You obviously saw a lot of Quinton Patton in the offseason, but not a lot of him catching the ball and moving with the ball. Was that impressive to you how quick he was after he had the ball in his hands?

"We saw a lot of him catching the ball prior to July 23, then he had the injury and was out for three weeks. But, he wasn't really out, because he was still out there practicing. But, yeah I think he's a good physical player. I don't think that the big stage bothers him, and it doesn't make him nervous. He's a competitor, you notice that. Boy you hate to say too much more about a rookie player. See if he can't just keep getting better."

he looks so ready.. the perceived weakness is not a real weakness... just watch. and we proved which we knew all along, that we aren't a read option team (we don't even run the read option) we proved that we're a team that COLD run it if and when we want to.

and blaxican welcome... go to the first page and join the group

Parys Haralson traded to the Saints

Pisses me off because we need the depth. I was loving the idea of him and Corey backing up Aldon & Ahmad.

if we traded him, its because he was going to be cut and we wanted to get value for him, simple as that man.

we're too deep.. we were saying this in the game thread yesterday.

smart thing, instead of just releasing people who are good cause they can't make the team.. get something for them.

Scott Tolzien, a third-year quarterback, headlined the group. The former undrafted quarterback out of Wisconsin was signed by San Francisco prior to the 2011 season. Tolzien served as the 49ers No. 3 signal-caller the past two years. He was the only quarterback on the roster to not see action in the team’s 34-14 preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.

In addition, San Francisco waived offensive lineman Al Netter, running back D.J. Harper, punter Colton Schmidt and linebacker Joe Holland.

As expected Tolzein got cut. Seneca is next, after the performances last 2 games, can't hide b.j. daniels on the practice squad too many teams need qb's
we need to be stingy.
we could have our montana and young

I don't think we were going to cut him. The Saints needed someone and I think they offered something Baalke was intrigued by.

At the end of last season we needed a backup OLB badly and had no one. The lack of depth hurt us. That's why I was excited to see him and Corey as the 2 backups. Good depth at the position.

I think they were going to let him go just because of how good the younger cheaper players were playing. there's really good depth at olb for us STILL.

that or the saints really offered multiple picks like some are saying.. a 2nd next year and a 3rd in 2015

I agree with everything just said !!!
Paris was beasting in the preseason, back to his old self.
He is VERY good against the run & was also showing some pass rush ability.
I doubt that we were going to cut him, shit he looked a hella lot better than Cam Johnson!

I just read we traded him for only a 7th rd pick..... WTF!!!
Sometimes this coaching staff fucks up man.
They probably traded him b/c he only has 1 year left on his contract & salary cap reasons.
I really don't think this is a good move.

it aint the end of the world.
we have the depth we need at that position. pick hasn't been confirmed yet

its going to be lemoneir and skuta as the back ups

but if you think about it the olb aren't the problem.. weren't the problem for depth.. neither were the inside linebackers it was the defensive line who were playing too many snaps
Demarcus Dobbs Glenn Dorsey Will Tukuafu

these 3 will be more valuable than anything and then add tank to the mix once he comes back as well..

we got our slot

The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a trade with the New Orleans Saints. The 49ers will receive an undisclosed 2014 draft choice in return for sending linebacker Parys Haralson to the Saints. Haralson must pass a physical in New Orleans for the trade to be executed.

I remember hoping for Cyprien before the draft, but i think Eric Reid is gonna change my mind.

by the time the draft came i was hoping we got reid. i looked at his size and numbers compared to the other safeties and he is actually better at everything than the other safeties physically.

and now we find him having superior intelligence as well?

he's picked up the defense and he had to work for it so he appreciates it.. a couple comments about this news

Q: How do you feel now compared to your first day of camp.

REID: I feel like a professional football player now. The first day I got here, it was a lot faster than college, the defense was a little bit tougher but it just takes practice and repetition.

Q: When were you told you’re the starting free safety?

REID: Just now. It’s obviously good news for me. I’m just going to keep working hard and try to keep the spot.

Q: What did you say when he told you?

REID: He didn’t, you just told me.

Q: Did you have an inkling?

REID: I’ve been running with the Ones the past couple days. I guess that’s always been the goal, but I just try to get better every day at practice.

Q: Did you feel comfortable with the starters against the Vikings?

REID: I did feel comfortable, but I think that’s a credit to training camp. I spent some time with those guys in camp the past couple of days. It’s just like practice, just different uniforms.

I know Goldson was a Pro Bowler and solid for us but he never picked up the game as quickly as Reid has and was often taking bad angles, missing tackles trying to blow people up while at the same time being somewhat of a personal foul machine. Reid seem headier and I believe has a higher ceiling. Looks like TB hit the mark again by moving up and getting his man.

The whole philosophy, you know a lot of people thought, ‘get him in that first game against the Broncos.' Was it all just about making sure that he was competent enough so that when he got that first opportunity he had enough background behind him? Why not just stick him in from the beginning and let him go?

"Well, first off, seven plays against the Broncos and [QB] Peyton Manning and he handed it off three of those seven, I don't know that's going to make much difference in how he plays this year. Two, I think everybody has to come in and earn their position. I've been around too many situations, at times, where guys have been given something and they don't learn to appreciate it or have to fight to go earn something and it becomes too easy. I think we've done a good job of setting a precedent here with that. Like I told you before, Aldon Smith did not earn his nickel rushing job as a rookie until after the fourth preseason game where he really played well against San Diego. That was when he earned his position as the nickel rusher for us. Last year, [WR] A.J. Jenkins barely got on the field so, just being a number one draft pick doesn't mean you come in and get a job."

KLEMKO: Pick one offensive player and one defensive player to start your franchise with, right now.

BILLICK: You’d naturally gravitate towards Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, but when you throw in the long-term, it’s Colin Kaepernick. He’s just so intriguing to me. I think he is such a unique talent. As good as RG3 and Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck are—and I love those guys—I also love the pure throwing action, the accuracy, the velocity, the fluidity of Kaepernick’s throwing. And I’m not even talking about the running. That’s also a factor. Defensively, I would go with J.J. Watt. And you might think, well, I’m going to go with a shutdown corner or a rush end, but I don’t know that there is such a thing as a shutdown corner anymore with the rules, and you can manufacture that edge rush. Getting that inside pass rush that you get from Watt is a unique thing. I’d go with that.

When someone tries to say Colin is a read option qb.

then you post this.

“Will defenses be able to stop Colin Kaepernick, the pistol formation and the read-option?”

Truth be told, this should be two separate questions. Analysts have trouble seeing the forest for the trees, and there isn’t a single fallacy in the NFL greater than attaching Colin Kaepernick’s abilities as a quarterback with the success of the read-option. I went through every touchdown the 49ers scored from the moment Kaepernick stepped on the field in Week 10 (including his two rushing touchdowns in spot appearances early in the season). The final numbers may surprise you:

Read-option rushing touchdowns by Kaepernick from the pistol formation: 4

Week 10 vs. Rams, fourth quarter – play-action fake, 7 yards around right end
Week 14 vs. Dolphins, fourth quarter – play-action fake, 50 yards around left end
Divisional Round vs. Packers, third quarter – play-action fake, 56 yards around right end

Read-option rushing touchdowns by Kaepernick from other formations: 1

Week 12 at Saints, first quarter – Shotgun (single back), read-option play-action fake, 7 yards around left end

NFC Championship at Falcons, third quarter – Pistol, Gore off right tackle for 5 yards

The thing that everyone seems to not talk about is that although we run the read-option. It's the focal point of our offense. We're so much more than the read-option.

So if teams want to focus on stopping the read-option let them. We'll just line up traditionally and score.
