see, u fucking with my emotions...i cant even vote for this thread...de la vs. tribe is not fair comparison...two of my fav groups against one another
:angry::angry::angry::angry::angry:

Man, I've always been a big fan of both groups but back in the day l, I liked Tribe more. As a kid, I thought of De La as being weirdos/nerds that made good music. Tribe seemed to be more real to me, I could relate more to them.

I remember seeing De La back in 2000 on the Spitkicker Tour (Reflection Eternal, Common, Pharoah Monch, Biz Markie) and the kids that were at the show didn't know any of De La's songs except for "Ooh" with Redman (which at the time was gettin crazy radio play).

But back to the question at hand: its hard to decide. I guess for me, after Midnight Marauders, Tribe fell the fuck off and hard. Their shyt was just wack to me after that. The Ummah's production just couldn't compare to the first 3 albums. Then in 98 they broke up. But De La on the other hand stayed together for over 20 years and their music stayed consistent. You can't say that De La put out a wack or sub par album. Hell, their shyt still bangs.

Side Note: Trugoy & Pos were pretty much on the same level lyrically to me whereas Tip was killin Phife lyrically up until MM (even though Phife showed promise on "Butter" on Low End Theory).

2 different styles......... De las sampling was on some next shit.... Tribe brought jazz music into hip hop real heavy....
This is a fucked up poll... Wtf????? How you put these groups against each other ....... Fuck you!!!!!!!!+ QUEST BROKE UP..... DE LA NEVER BROKE UP &STILL MAKE MUSIC & DO SHOWS......... NOW!!!!!!!!!!! TOP THAT HOMO....PUTTIN THIS THREAD UP..... THE FUCK IS WRONG WIT YOU?????

Tribe were fire but De La are still around and making dope music.

Quite possibly one of the most difficult polls ever created on BGOL. I forfeit my decision.

I have ask this question to my friends for years and no one ever gives an answer. Always a tie I am going to go with De La Soul.

De la was over rated. After 3 feet, their albums were ass. There live show sucked donkey balls.

Stakes Is High... Art Official Intelligence... The Grind Date...

Midnight marauders>>>>De La's catalogue

And I'm a huge De La fan.
"I hate a buster, unless his name is Busta Rhymes"

Man I can't vote on this shit. This is like being in the middle of a fight between two good friends.:smh:

I pick Tribe for 2 simple reasons...
1. A Low End Theory
2. Midnight Marauders

I cant really name a better group album than those 2. Atliens/Aquemini comes close. Enter the Wutang is close. Mobb Deep's Infamous is close. Only album I put above those 2 is Makaveli because of its completeness, and that was a solo album.

Id take De La for longevity (ie more better albums), lyrical ability of the GROUP, moving the crowd (assuming you have seen both in person), and creativity

but midnight marauders is the best album...imo at least

I'll have to say Tribe because their music had more of a universal appeal that De La.

I don't know anybody that didn't listen to and love Tribe back in the 90's. Black, white, man, woman, child....
De La's sound was more for hardcore underground hip-hop fans.

When I hear a Tribe song it takes be back to high school, college, road trips, even just hanging on the block.

Damn, and I thought it was The Jungle Brothers who birthed both. :hmm:

De La has more hits than Tribe :smh:
De La has influenced more :smh:
Q-Tip still makes music, and Phife will be making an album
Wasn't it Prince Paul who changed how artist sample music?
De La did not have more classic albums :smh:

it took this deep into this post for the real and i still ain't seen " Native Tongues " and JB from Africa Bambatta/Zulu Nation. let me read on....

De La still working, still putting out work. When was the last Tribe album? How was it? Case is made, De La wins this one easily.

De La, hands down. Tribe had catchier soongs and more radio play. they aslo created more classics. but every album after midnight marauders sucked.

On the other hand De La never put out a bad album. Sadly it seems like they didnt hit their stride until after that era had past. but they are still making music and they seem like they keep getting better. they have not fallen off.

Co Sign!!! You cant compare the offspring to the origin. Plus those are my two most Favorite groups. But if I had to I would go with Tribe.

Tribe CAME from De La why compare? :smh::smh::dunno:

De La i will admit was kinda boring compared to Tribe but we should never compare those 2 legendary groups man, never.

atcq made eletric relaxation
and it gets no better than electric relaxation

no disrespect to de la, but I just love tribe

both are pioneers, but…

De La ushered in a new era in hip hop that allowed Tribe to come in.
De La pioneered skits on albums and changed the way artists sample music.
De La has had more classic albums than Tribe.
De La's albums always had at least 2-3 classic joints.
De La has more hits.
De La has influenced more music and more artists.
De La still makes music today.
Every member of De La contributed unlike the whole Jarobi era…:hmm:

if you go album for album, De La clearly wins. Overall, De La wins as well.
still love Tribe though.
shout out to Jarobi wherever you are…

You make a solid case and I agree with some points but if they're better its only because theyre still together to this day makin dope shit, theyre more of an actual group, and none of their members are named QTip.

But from a musical standpoint...The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders were more than just classic albums B, we're talkin about the pinnacle of hip-hop overall and I say that with all the respect and love in the world for De La as a huge fan. What other artist has put out 2 consecutive LPs that at the time up until this day you make the case of either one being the best album ever in hip-hop?

And to say they got more hits and influenced more artists and music is jus a lil cwazay. Lets define hit and influence and lets be real, noones makin a De La movie anytime soon. I'd definitely call that influence. People tend to forget De La changed the game (via Prince Paul who was the architect of their sound), and then Tribe came in and and changed that fucker again and then some (via Tip). Which do you think has had a more lasting influence. I would say Tribe at the end of the day.

tribe of course they were betta more hitz de la was a more mellow calmer group jus like their music

Just Finished watching the Documentry. It was Straight Fiyah!!! Monie Love is as Foine as Ever!!

Gotta go with tribe even though i like de la soul.
Stressed Out, What Really Goes On, Bonita Applebum, Find My Way, Buggin Out, 1nce Again and a personal favorite Lyrics To Go

Never been a deep hip hop head, but De La always spoke to me in ways no other rap group has touched.

I like hip hop, but I rarely connect with it. Except De La.
