Basically, folks need to LIVE in Japan to get a better sense of things (not just VISIT, I mean LIVE in Japan). To anyone who actually knows Japanese people, this couldn't be further from the truth in most cases (not to say that there aren't brainwashed zombies here, but that can be said for EVERY country, so I digress).

How cartoons look and are drawn, MOST of the time, is not meant to be snapshot of reality as far as appearances of the characters are concerned (which is VERY MUCH unlike the philosophy behind how most cartoons are drawn in the US). I'll leave it at that.

There's a really good scene in "A Soldier's Story" where Adolf Caesar is telling one of his soldiers how when he was in europe, some white soldiers got a black dude to put a fake tail on and parade around in front of the white chicks over there.... so basically, he and some other black soldiers got the guy alone and slit his throat. It was a pretty intense scene when he was describing it... gotta see if it's on youtube.

My dad was stationed over there in the late 50s to early 60s and he said that the women who went out with him or who he befriended would always ask to see his tail. When he asked where they got the idea that Black people had tails he said they told him the White military men said that Blacks were closer to monkeys and apes than humans and so Blacks had tails. (The Whites were trying to freeze out the Blacks from getting any Asian poon-tang)
