As it turns out, that is an American opinion, not a Japanese one. The Japanese see anime characters as being Japanese. It is Americans who think they are white. Why? Because to them white is the Default Human Being.

Rare occasions when I do not see the euro-centric style of Japanese characters in anime are shows that deal specifically with a historical Japanese time period like Samurai Champloo for instance. And that show was set during the Edo time period (1600's to late 19th century).


A thread with the same inquiry was made a while back and the consensus was that the Americanization of Japan after WW II had a lot to do with how they portrayed themselves in anime.

As far as Chinese, look at history. China is dead right in having beef with Japan, and even to this day Japan hasn't admitted to all they have done.

As for Black people, Japan is an extremely homogeneous country. Black citizens in Japan are essentially unheard of, and even black tourists are extremely uncommon in Japan. so if they rarely see us in real life, the only time they ever see us is on TV, movies and music, and that rarely puts us in a good light.

And being fair, there's a good amount of anime that shows white people as hicks, cowboys or stereotypical solders.
