The other part is is the movement off the ball by the Cameroonians. This where coaching comes in, and I am sorry, they were terrible at it.

...

This bullshit these bullshit European coaches have Cameroon and Nigeria playing is not African football.

C/S

This team needs to watch the 1990 team.

The game was won and lost in midfield. Do not listen to any American, they run their mouths and spout ignorance. If you want to learn real football, listen carefully to Ruud Gullit and Klins-Nazi-man. The midfield is the first line of defence and the chinks simply were able to choke off supplies to the Cameroonia forward. They were also able to put numbers around him and isolate him from the lazy Cameroonian midfield that never came up to support the strikes and very rarely went back in defence. They just stood around and let their forward and back 4 play man to man defence. The Chinks chocked out the spacing and tackled well enough in numbers to leave the isolated Cameroonian defender or winger no room.

Ruud Gullit questioned the staffing of the Cameroonian midfield. He is more familiar with the players than I am. I could see within the first 4 minutes that they were disjointed in midfield, and that their problem would be hard to correct. You can see it from my comments from the start of the game..

What you need is a skilled midfielder like Paul Gaxcoigne, Andreas Iniesta or JJ Okocha to beat some people and draw away the coverage. That is how you open up a clogged defence. Taking the ball to the wing is not the answer because the Japanese were always defending in numbers... This why a person like Lionel Messi is so valuable because he goes in an causes the defence to shift towards him and open day light.

The other part is is the movement off the ball by the Cameroonians. This where coaching comes in, and I am sorry, they were terrible at it. They tackled harder in the second half and slowed the Chinks but they really did not move well in open space. The best teams at this are Brazil and Argentina. The Mexicans try it, but they are not in the league of Brazil of the Nazi from th River Plate...

This is quality Cameroon used to be good at, but like Mike Tyson, they abandoned their skill set some time ago, thinking they can overpower people just because they are Cameroon. Where is the brilliance in midfield of Makanaki and Paul Louis Mfede? Of the Biyik brothers? This bullshit these bullshit European coaches have Cameroon and Nigeria playing is not African football.

Fuck that bullshit! Mustoe was right. It was basic defense, and when Cameroon was getting frustrated because of the middle being shut down, they should've adjusted. This match was lost from bench, but you couldn't see that from the bottle. You're always yelling that midfield shit. Muhfucka, make the adjustment! They had all kinds of chances when they were dumping the ball into the 18 yard box. Japan had been taking away the midfield all match. What the fuck did you think was going to change midway through the second half?! so far, you've blamed EVERYONE but the players. Whose fault was it when Nigeria rolled over like a bunch of bitches, was it a European coach too?

i alll these teams who are losing always wait till the last 2 minutes of the game to step up and start putting pressure to score?

Damn... I am telling you this is the lowest point for Africa... Unfortunately, all this does is pump Korea for Nigeria..Fortunately, the Nigerians have more skilled players than the rabble village nonsense I saw in the Cameroon uniform. If Lagenback calls a good system, Nigeria should beat Korea easily.

It can only get better from here though. Ghana won, but even they did not look too good.

Isn't Robbie Mustoe english?

Because these are the group stages, and the first games for all these teams. Nobody wants to go all out open. That's why all the games have been low scoring, 1-1, nil-nil draws or 1 goal wins.

It'll pick up in the latter stages of the tournament.

I still maintain that it was a lack of width in addition to the midfield being dominated by the Japanese. Cameroon looked much more bright in the second half when they brought on players who got wide and fed the ball into the box. You would have thought that Cameroon would adjust their formation after the Japanese were able to clog the midfield but for some reason they didn't. Finally, I thought they should have brought on Song as he goes box to box and keeps possession better than any of the midfielders they had on today.

Which is why I was surprised that the game didn't really open up after the Japanese goal. No side can afford to lose the opening game...

You are shrill but ignorant about the game. You make wrong attributions, and yet use my arguments. If the game is disjointed in midfield, and it is not the fault of one players, it is usually because of a deficient coaching scheme. Here is why (the ignorant American) Mustrowe is wrong, and Ruud Gullit basically said the same thing. Defence is midfield. Midfield is defence. I do not care if you 4 Lothar Mathiases on defence, if your team keeps exposing you to the other teams strikers, they will score sooner or later. This is not about the back 4, or about discipline... It is about the midfield. Most teams use 4 defenders in the back. Left to their own devices, they would have to face 2 forwards and 2 midfielders..If you look at the spacing, the offense has an advantage. One defender will pressure the ball, leaving 3. Another defender must share his attention with of keeping an eye on his wing, that leaves you with 2 defenders marking 2 or 3 men. I do care if the goal keeper is combination of Dino Zoof, Oliver Kahn and Gordon banks, the ball is going.. from any of so many ways..

Even that ignoramus, Alexi Lalas, had the sense to see during the confederations cup, that fundamental defense requires the placement of at least 2 bodies between the ball and the next striker. Well, that means someone must come in from somewhere and provide that defence. Cameroon did not do this, and left their defenders in solo istuations. Most of the time they won the ball, since defence is the stronger of the two types of warfare, but sometimes the Chinks got through and Cameroon had to foul, leading to the many Chink (and Argentine) kicks.

All the above relates to the play of the midfield, not of the backline. The midfielders have the job of plugging in the spaces. That is not about disciplined back 4 defending, but about midfielders understanding how to move without the ball. Klins-Nazi said the same thing about the Australia. He said they were moving with the ball, not not moving without the ball. The US used to play that way 15 years ago (I know because I saw them live on many occasions), now they are better at it.

This game is about the midfield, and if you read my comments, I said at half time, that the Cameroon coach would have to earn his money with his half time adjustments. He told the midfielders to go after the Chinks and they did. However, they did not improve their offensive movement and could not improve their passing because these are things you have to prepare and perfect in training. This team is not built that way, and they are gonna pay a stiff price. They will lose their next 2 games and be on the way.

This game proves my point about the midfield. Eto'o , one of the best strikers in the world, was nowhere to be seen partly because his midfield was not existent and partly because he was out of position. You put Eto'o on South Africa, to receive service from Pienaar and Benard Parker, South Africa scores 5 goals.

The reason why I know these things is that I grew up playing this sport. I went to training with a few people who became pros and went to Europe. I was taught these fundamentals, but I did not have the talent. Other people were faster on their feet and in their mind than I was... But I learned a lot about the game...

That is why I know bullshit when I hear it. Martinez, was saying the same thing. Listen to the Europeans. Do not listen to these Americans... they cannot break down this game..

Cameroon's problem is a tactical one, not a technical one. Technique is a player issue, tactics are a coaching issue. The same was true about Nigeria. That is why we blame the coach and not the players. A technical problem was the weak or reluctant marking of Pienaar. This is directly what led to the Mexican goal. The bugger reached the guy with the ball, and then stopped 2 yards from him. He made a perfect cross and Rafa Marquez scored. As good as the bugger was offensively, Carlos Aberto Perreira was angry and he took the motherfucker out..

Do not listen to me.. do not listen to any commentator. Rewind your DVR and watch the game. See how many times Cameroonian forwards were isolated by 3 Japanese defenders with no help in sight. And then see how the Japanese always seemed to have some around to support whoever had the ball. This speaks to good movement without the ball. This is a midfield tactical issue.. bucause in order to facilitate progress, you must not only move into space, but you must move into the right space... This was the big difference between Mexico and South Africa in the first half. The Mexican midfield just obliterated the South African one with superior movement. However, Carlos Aberto Perreira not only corrected the situation at half time, but countered brilliantly with speed up the middle... such that Mexico almost lost the game. One advantage South Africa have is that they replaced one Brazilian coach with another, and so it was easy for theire to be continuity in the system.

The first reason why this stupid coach needs to go is that he made Eto'o play a central, and even defensive midfield role.. and promoted this bulb headed idiot, Webo, to the place where Eto'o should be... I mean, how can you misuse a million dollar striker like that? This motherfucker must hate Eto'o..

Eto'o is by far their best player and it does seem like the coach must hate him. the coach has the right pieces but doesnt know how to use them, how he is their coach i don't know it was just sad watching it. i hate the fact that there was no creativity consistently. just a couple of times where eto'o managed to break away and create but they couldn't get it in. next up were strikes from impossible ranges just to i guess attempt to have a shot on goal.

to me the coach must go because the system he has with the players is just silly.

Decided to finally check out the world cup this morning and the horns make it unbearable to watch. If they continue to let people use those this will go down as one of the biggest blunders in sports history!

i dont understand the gripe with the horns you dont even notice them after a while well at least i dont. its just a constant noise and its not that bad to me. horns arent an issue in the tournament. if they didnt have horns, they'd be singing random songs dancing beating the noise wouldnt stop at all so everyone needs to chill with being upset with the horns

That is why the coach has to go. There are lot of talented European coaches who can do the job. Herve Renaurd, the coach who just resigned from the Zambia job is such a person. Wieslaw Grabowski, Westerhoff are all coaches who have proven that they understand African players... I am sure that there are many many more who would like to make a name in Afrca before landing a big job in Europe.. Why not hire them. Why always recycle the same rejects like Claude Le Roi or Otto Pfister.. Of course now we can add the motherfucking Phillip Le Guen to the list. I personally would love to see the job given to Steven Keshi or Emmanuel Kunde.. Look at the miracle George Weah did with Liberia a couple of years ago.

are there any qualified former african players that can coach

Nzingha is right it all starts and ends in the midfield. Every team needs a Claude makelele to be succussful.

Zidane said that when Madrid sold Mak and brought in Beckham "Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?"

Everyone saw what he did for both France and Chelsea...

Steven Keshi..and Emmanuel Kunde, Santos Mutubile, George Weah, Samson Siasia, Charles Musonda, Kalusha Bwalya etc etc...

They do not get the jobs because African football admins have a colonial mentality and think Europeans are the only ones who know how to coach..Also, there is the question of corruption.. There are also local politics that militate against local hires..

I am not wise or cleverer than other people, I am simply regurgitating the old formular...

which is stupid. i'd like to see someone get the chance, im sure that they can do the job. at this point i think cameroon would be better off coaching themselves the rest of the world cup

4 years and you do this, what a waste

hope they believe in miracles cause that's the only way they make it out. could've had 3 points and in the driver seat.
now they're passengers with child locks on the door

Cameroon's shit performance if Paraguay can manage to beat these Italian bastards...I fucking HATE the racist Italians...FUCK THEM

Say what you want, but the Americans are more organised than we are, and it will show results soon. They have a well organised youth system where they develop young players... They also have a system where they are recruiting their own coaches. There was Sampson, who replaced with Arena, who replaced with Bob Bradley... The confidence shown in the coaching, hopefully infuses into players..

Yo man...what is up with the African teams...only 1 win so far

We did not expect much out of South Africa, but they almost won.
We though that Nigeria might lose but they did worse.
Algeria were unlucky
Ghana did as all should do
There is no excuse for the shit we just saw from Cameroon. The coaches needs to go, and evaluation of the whole team needs to follow..
Ivory Cioast have a legitimate excuse in a hobble Drogba..

Other than that I do not know what to say.

Fuck this BBC Commentary. So fucking biased

Mick McCarthy commentating! Roy Keane was right.....he is a cunt

When did Ireland win anything??? Where is David Platt or James Richardson?????

I was watching some BBC coverage of the Worl Cup about an hr ago and they mentioned that the German team has the new ball for the whole season to practice with which is not case for the other teams.

It could be true because adidas is a German firm. But the ball is round and I am tired of hearing weak ass excuses

Nzinga; The Italians have the flop in their DNA and are proud of it
