Since we're now a pay only board with a pretty active membership, I was thinking about what just took place on my Motorcycle board.
The board owner and Admin is pretty much like HNIC - he's a techie who only checks in from time to time. He leaves most of the daily work to the members and mods. But after 2 years of complaints about attacks we had from another motorcycle board (Consider it our Tranny attacks) and about the MODs, he clearly recognized that MODs cannot do all the work and some of the MODs frankly, sucked at their jobs.
They weren't always on the job while playing favorites with some members - while attacking others with bans, locking threads they felt they didn't like, deleting threads, and even a perma-ban for 5 members, 3 of which didn't have shit to with a situation that took place and for which many of us VOCALLY OBJECTED. (all this sound familiar
)
So on Monday he announced a new structure and a new feature. Member controlled deletion options and a MOD annual review!
(1) Members of the board can now vote on a thread via a checkmark or X ... if a certain number of X's are reached in the first 24hours of a post, BANG, the post is automatically deleted.
He didn't say what the magic number is - but did say it's basically 25% of whatever 5% of his most active posters select. (So, if there's about 2000 members, but 100 active users on the board per day - 25 "no" votes and the thread is gone.) Which I think is pretty good idea. Lurkers and the stupid bastard on here who gives EVERYTHING One-Star should not really have any bearing in the polling process.
(2) The MOD annual review and elections are pretty simple. He selects a group of people who he thinks would be MOD worthy (and takes requests from the members). There's a poll - top Vote earners get the position.
MODs with too many complaints get the boot and can be replaced at any time.
So, simple enough questions:
- Should MEMBERS of the board (Non-15 Day at least 1,000 Post) be allowed to vote once per year on who the MODS should be for the upcoming year, and which MODS should have their MOD privileges revoked.
- Should MEMBERS of the board (Non-15 Day at least 1,000 Post) be allowed to vote on which threads can be "Member" deleted. (i.e. Include a member deleted option with a limit of "X" number of votes. If the "X" number is reached within the first 24 hours of the post being active - off it goes. DELETED.
