Gartner: iPhone Doubles Share of Smartphone Market Over Year-Ago Quarter

Research firm Gartner today released a report covering mobile phone sales for the first quarter of 2009. As part of the report, Gartner released sales figures and market share for the smartphone category, which includes Apple's iPhone. According to Gartner's numbers, Apple more than doubled its share of the worldwide smartphone market to 10.8%, up from 5.3% in the year-ago quarter, maintaining its third position behind Nokia and Research in Motion. The increase came in the context of a smartphone marker that grew by 12.7%, while the overall mobile market shrank by 9.4%.

While Apple's smartphone market share saw a significant increase over the year-ago quarter, it was essentially flat compared to Apple's 10.7% share in the fourth quarter of 2008. The quarter-to-quarter results do, however, indicate that iPhone sales held up relatively well as the current model progressed into what should end up being the latter half of its life cycle.

Research in Motion, which offers the BlackBerry line of smartphones, also saw strong sales, seeing its share of the worldwide smartphone market reach 19.9%, a nearly 50% increase over the year-ago quarter and up slightly over its 19.5% share in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Apple is doing an incredible job. They have only been in the smartphone arena 3 years, yet the waves they create shakes all. The iPhone is still changing the game and RIM knows this. On an even playing field, which is AT&T, the iPhone is stepping all over them and the other smartphones. So yes Blackberrys 20 some odd models across numerous carriers sells more. The iPhone if it had the same playing field would be close if not surpass.


Props to Apple. AT&T better put out better plans to attract more people. That I think is the sticking point. I honestly think if they could include unlimited SMS/MMS in the current plan would help. The $5.00 for 200 messages is just too small. Unlimited email is nice but SMS/MMS is more convinient and universal because ALL PHONE RECIEVE SMS. Wake up AT&T.

Looks like the iPhone is very competitivley priced. Its even a better value when you see all the shit it can do with the huge base of free Apps, let alone the slew of equally great paid apps. And the apps are cheaper than their Blackberry equivalents.

Not every one is a person that will like every or anything Apple puts out. If you looked at the charts guess which types of phones sell more than the 200 dollar phone with the crappy contract and expensive plan yeah thats right its the free or 50 dollar phones with the what ever plan you feel like.

If you compared the iphone with other 200 dollar phones it wouldn't be in 3rd place it would be holding its own very nicely. If you compared phones on 1 carrier vs the iphone it wouldn't be in 3rd place it would be holding its own. If you compared cell phone data plans with the iphone it would also hold its own in that catagory.

I cosign. And I have seen the phones people carry. The list I made was on point with the thread, which is about Smart phones. Not average phones. So please look at the list in that context.

Apple has done an amazing job. And trust me, Apple is working on those low-end phones. Also AT&T is working up a $20 limited data plan I hear. Apple has also hinted at a new line of iPhones too.


I see continued growth for the iPhone and its offspring.
