Basketball Heads: Why The Hell Is Bill Walton In The Hall of Fame?

How long was his peak? Compare that to the rest of the players on the list. I cant think of another player who only had 4 years as a top player. A 6th man award doesnt mean shit when we are talking about the TOP 50 PLAYERS EVER.

How old are you?? This guy was only a "6th Man" because he was playing on crippled feet and ankles, and he still DOMINATED in that role. He wasn't a "6th Man" because he wasn't good enough to start.

Why are you talking to me about "what could have been"? Is that supposed to count for something? Cause it doesnt to me.

It's not "what could have been," but what was. Everytime he was physically able to step on the court he was one of the best players in the league. If you were alive back then you might understand that.

If Len Bias didnt smoke crack he would be on the list too. But guess what, he did. Does that mean something to you?

Len Bias didn't play 10 years in the NBA and dominate the league for a number of them. Maybe YOU'RE the one on crack, or just a simple racist.

Re: Why The Hell Is Bill Walton In The Hall of Fame?

not for nothing, but bill walton played in 49 NBA playoff games.

son luke walton? 59 NBA playoff games.

That is why Luke, not Bill should be in the hall. Dragging the rat faced weasel Tobe into the playoffs once Snaq left is an accomplishment in itself.

Bull.

Again, compare how many peak years are we talking about? Compare that to the rest of the players on the list. I have no idea since when 4-5 top years get in a top 50 ever list. Or even the hall. You still talking shit about "what could have been" or "when he was healthy". What about the players who DID do it for a long time and are not in the hall?

HNIC gonna get major traffic in about 12 hours from now. still haven't decided if i want to drive into LA or watch at home.

When you're an MVP and a dominant CENTER with unusual skills.

Or even the hall. You still talking shit about "what could have been" or "when he was healthy". What about the players who DID do it for a long time and are not in the hall?

None of those "players who did it for a long time" (whoever they are) had the peak years that Walton did, obviously. Were they ever MVPs?? No.

How many "peak years" did Gale Sayers have? He played all of 4.5 years due to injuries. No one questioned his HOF credentials. He clearly established himself as one of the all-time greats over a short period of time, as did Walton (who played longer, and became one of the all-time great "6th Men" along with an all-time great center).

Again, Walton's career was hindered by injury, and not by a failure to perform beyond 4 or 5 great years (as a starter). He wasn't a "flash in the pan" as you seem to imply. He was outstanding right to the end, in whatever role he was able to play.

First 6 years (mostly starting): 33.1 MPG 16.6 PPG 12.8 RPG 4.2 APG

That's all in less than 3/4 of a game.

Last 3 regular years (less playing time): 23.1 MPG 9.6 PPG 8.0 RPG 2.5 APG

That's in less than 1/2 a game. 8.0 RPG!!! 2.5 APG!!!

Bill Walton belongs in the Hall for what he did at UCLA...but to have him as an NBA top 50 player, invalidates the list.

I believe this stems from the days when most of the NBA centers were big and black, and Walton was the antidote. He was gonna dominate the league and win championships year after year...obviously it didn't happen.
But some of them like to pretend it did...

The year Portland won...they would say how Walton dominated Kareem.I'd look in the paper and Kareem's numbers would double Walton's...but Walton, with the better team would win.

All part of the illusion...as is Walton being a top 50 player.

Umm, you do realize it's the basketball hall of fame (college and the pros) right?

But if that was the case the HOF would be full of Duke players.

2 years. 2 years with more than 18 points and never a season with more than 14 after that.

I can dig all of the questions regarding Walton's pro resume but... real talk... dude was beast before he got hurt.

No one gets in based predominantly on their college career ('cept coaches and women), fool. You still have to make a big impact in the NBA.

If he did get in based on college (which he didn't), then what are you bitching about? He's one of the Top 5 greatest college players in history. It should be a no-brainer.

I know you really like having dialogue, eventhough 3/4's of 50k members have you on ignore...and you being BGOL's resident Perez Hilton I dont blame them...you are an obvious Googlehound , and misanthrope and not a sports fan so miss me with your alledged first-hand knowledge of Sport...see its little things like knowing not searching the starting 5 who played with Walton at Westwood, why Luke wears #4 or why the Wiz loved Red...youre trying to stump the Schwab and it wont happen:lol:...but its all good say Hello to my little friend.

My ignore button

Because he's possibly the greatest college player of all time and if not for injuries would have been one the top 7 or 8 NBA centers at least. Bill Walton was a GREAT basketball player.

There are no Duke players that accomplished what Bill Walton did. Dunking was outlawed his entire college career and he still shot about 60%, led his team to an 88 game win streak and went like 20 for 22 in one national championship game. he may have been the most skilled college center ever.

Umm, you do realize it's the basketball hall of fame (college and the pros) right?

he is also in the nba top 50 of all time. CAC was good but he is not deserving of hall of fame he missed to many games with injuries. dude was softer then macgrady.

thats sum funny shit there lol. FUCK TOBE!!!!!!!

I am old enouh to remember watching Walton Play in college and for Portland. He was a tremendous player that due to injuries stopped him from becoming one of the greatest of all time.

But lets put things into context, at the time of Walton's pro basketball career, besides Kareem ad possible malone though I could argue the point no center dominated like Walton.

Hall of fame voters vote based on the player during thier time not against other players of other eras. So Walton wasn't compared to Russel not was he compared to Hakeem of Shaq, he was compared to Darryl Dawkins and Tom Riker, the NBA had a down period on centers (excluding Dave Cowens) during his career and he was he best even with his injuries of a bad lot.

Yeah he was white and he got in on sentimentality( for his UCLA) and a bit of extrapolation (of what he could have been) and a bit of identification(young white dope smoking sports writers related to him).

My biggest problem is he is a pain in the ass as a commentator on NBA games, to much of a no it all.

When healthy he was one of the greatest, most verstaile centers in NBA history.

MVP, NBA champion and 6th Man winner. Played his whole career on basically crippled feet.

And he shot 21 for 22 in the National Championship Game scoring 44 points. You can't play the race card on this one this dude belongs in the hall of fame.

Re: Why The Hell Is Bill Walton In The Hall of Fame?

Walton was both in 77

Actually, he was the Finals MVP in '76-'77 the year before he was the NBA MVP (when Portland won 50 of its first 60 games before he got injured).

He was a distant runner-up to Abdul-Jabbar for league MVP the year Portland won the title. He took the MVP for himself the next year, though that great team fell short of repeating because of his injury.

Or just one of the greatest centers in the history of basketball.

One of the greatest centers of all time? Is he top ten? Cause I can named 10 better than him in my sleep. And do you think Penny and Grant Hill are HOFer because they both were dominate players at there positions before injury (although neither won a ring or were MVP)? He had a few great seasons but I don't think he played 500 career games.

When healthy, yes!! What couldn't he do (beside make a high percentage of free throws)?

Cause I can named 10 better than him in my sleep.

Good for you.

Since neither won an MVP (or even came close) they obviously weren't as dominant at their positions as Walton was at his (much more important) one. Hardaway really did nothing HOF worthy. Hill is certainly an HOF quality player and better than a number of those already in the Hall. He should get some consideration, though he likely won't because there are too many great players at his position. I'll ask again, name an MVP who isn't in the Hall.

He had a few great seasons but I don't think he played 500 career games.

How many games did HOFers Gale Sayers play or Sandy Koufax pitch? Players whose off-the-charts careers are blown up due to injury, and not simple failure-to-perform, can still be recognized by knowledgeable people. Walton put in 10 years on two bad feet. He was highly productive in 9 of them.

(BTW, I thought it was stated earlier that college play was also factored into his HOF status, and he was arguably the greatest college player ever. Dude went nearly 5 years without losing a game from high school through college.)

Would be a good comparison if Walton was the player the caliber of Koufax and Sayers. Koufax was the most dominate BASEBALL PLAYER for 5 years. Sayers was the best Offensive weapon for maybe four years before injuries. Bill Walton wasn't the best basketball player (or center for that matter) before his injuries.

Combination of both. DUke players for the most part havent done shit in the NBA.
