Why do black people think white people speak properly????

I didn't finish reading the rest of the thread, but I understand the point Kayanation is trying to make. Why do some Black people think imitating the dialect of the typical white person is speaking properly when it surely isn't?

I did a lot of moving around during my childhood. At one point, my parents would have me in a predominately white school and then back to a mostly Black school. Often, I had to change up my voice once I got around my Black peers because they accused me of speaking proper like a white person. But that isn't true. It wasn't that I was speaking proper. Rather, I just got used to mimicing the intonation of my white counterparts.

I don't know about taking 'sounding white' as a compliment, but the average negro in the street thinks white people speak properly because they can't speak properly themselves. Too many of us just don't give enough of a damn to open a book. I remember one time this white girl told me I sound white and she was 'more black' than I am. I swear on everything I almost caught a case.

Why do black people think white people speak properly????

For the life of me I can't figure out that shit.

Then when someone says that they are sounding white they take it as a compliment............ :smh: :smh: :smh:

It is not a compliment. It is referring to you forcing yourself to assimilate to the DICTION of a white person.

Since when did "like" after every two words become correct?????

I have travelled to many cities over the years and I KNOW that a lot of white people DO NOT speak properly.

Why do black people feel that white people speak properly?????

So much so that they have white people feeling that they do!

As far as I see it you can speak properly without a "white" diction and be fine.

Patel, Prakash and Singh do fine with their indian dialect.

As far as I see it, the pressure to assimilate crosses good common sense in our own people.

Most times the person discriminating against a black sounding name in HR is black himself/herself.

We need to stop that shit.

I didn't read your post, maybe later

but my random answer is because white people commonly enunciate their words more

and usually use words that are found in the dictionary

just caught that part of pastor wright...."whoa"
never looked at it like that before.

respect bruh' kayanation

Some people almost killed me in this thread for saying the very same thing last year..........

Now we are moving again and would have to re-visit this same question that we ran from collectively as a people.........

To me when I say a person sounds white what I'm saying is their voice has the same accent that the average white person has, not the way they are pronouncing words because most americans don't pronounce english right regardless of race or ethnicity.

I think most people feel this way but express it wrong.

We know how we change our accent, especially women when they get around white people and to me that is trying to talk white because instead of using their average accent they change it up due to subconsciously having shame for their own accents or they don't want someone to know their race on the phone due to discrimination.

If they learn vocabulary and how to pronounce words they can talk with the heaviest accents and be the shit due to them knowing what hey are talking about and how to express it which most people can't do.

No one is really saying you're speaking "white" or that every white person speaks "properly". They're saying you don't sound like an ignorant fucking moron who doesn't understand basic grammar.

Many white people don't be talkin' right.

Thats some bullshit I know what you mean, I use different words to express my points so some people think im trying to be proper when im really being myself.

Now it would fuck me up to her a black person say motherfucker instead of mothafucka. Thats because we have alot of style when we speak. We have a different rhythm when we speak where as white people really just talk.

Really the sound of a white persons voice makes me want to slap they ass no matter what they are saying.

This isn't necessarily true. Plenty of black folks were simply raised in households where some semblance of standard English was spoken. Excessive slang, especially in the context of hip hop, is largely an affectation. I.e., lots of brothers go out of their way to sound less educated than they are.

damn i hate im so late gettin 2 this thread. im always talkin bout this.

it's basically ghetto & country people (not necessarily Blacks) who fuck up the english language,,, for the record, red necks, mexicans and asians fuck it up too,,,

every launguage has a standard,,, either you are speaking it correctly, or you are not,,,

but who's 2 say whats "proper english"?

I think its not that they speak "properly" but that some of us have reverted to such a malaigned form of an improper use of the english language where "slang" has become a norm in some cases; that many want to get as far away from the broken slang language as possible.
I'm continually listening to my students DELIBERATELY misuse the english language because they think its the hip thing to do.
I literally detest it when you have a Black person CHANGE their voice to a white diction.... where its repulsively obvious that that are over doing it.
In my opinion there is nothing wrong with having your own Black voice while speaking english with good diction.

co sign on most of this.

i always say "y am i supposed 2 sound like a white man 2 b considered "proper""? im NOT a white man. i have different roots and a TOTALLY different culture. now it IS a difference in soundin intelligent and soundin just straight up ignorant. but just because u wanna sound intelligent doesnt mean u have 2 sound white. i got a cousin that does that shit and i cant STAND it. i swear if u heard her over the phone you would think she was a cali valley girl. :smh: as black people we have a certain diction and tone 2 our voices. u DONT have 2 change that tone 2 sound intelligent.

and another thing 2 ponder. we were TAUGHT english by WHO?....WHITE people. so they taught us 2 speak as THEY speak. if we were never dragged over here from our homeland u dont know HOW we would b talkin. ill tell u THIS: it WOULDNT b english, u can BET that. so when we say certain words a certain way, that is our culture coming through. they might've taken us outta africa but africa STILL runs through our blood and history.

remember, the same people tellin us what "proper" english is are descendents of the same people who DIDNT want us 2 READ in the FIRST place.

so in the end who's 2 say whats "proper english" and whats not?

chuuch.

My take is this, we tend to mumble within a normal conversation to a certain degree. If you ever happen to listen to a young person call into the radio station or talk to them selves, you will notice that a large part of their vonverstation is mumbled, sort of lazy, enough to fustrate anyone trying to listen them because now you have to decipher what the message is, so the speaker is putting a greater burden on the listener. The problem is perpetuated when we begin to understand this mumbling. You have to put energy into your own dialect regardless of slang or lack of slang. Most white people, not all but most white put energy and effort into their speech creating a psuedo elusion of proper dialect , because of this we tend be able to understand most white people when they speak but have problems deciphering some of our brothers and sistas at time. The bottom line each person simply has to make sure everyone he or she is speaking to can understand them with ease. I have never changed my speech accent (southern) and people always say I speak well simply because I always try to make it easy for those who listen to me can EASILY understand me and the easier I make it the more of my people say I'm trying to sound white.

"Communication" add effort and people will understand you.

"Speaking is like a good book....the easier it is to understand the more people will read it."

only young ignorant kids, of all nationalities, think that way.
i havent ran into many black adults who preach this same BS.

we have to work on conditioning our chuildrens minds...thats all.
they have been misinformed.
this is just another case of self hate.

all humans use slang words....yes white folks have slang words also.
slang usage is not a BLACK thing.
we are not the only enthnicity that screwed and chopped the english language.

Wanna hear a large group of white people that speak terrible english move to New Orleans, guaranteed its one of the worst variations of the english language you'll hear in the country.

and probably the only set of white people use "Bruh" without necessarily being wiggers.

I have to disagree with this. My parents and grand parents were from the south, and they speak/spoke pretty standard English. Now, they might have used some expressions that weren't common to Northern Midwestern English, but it was nothing like the mangling of the language exemplified in the highly affected argot of hip hop types. Those negroes, and wiggers for that matter, speak that way on purpose. That shit is pure pretense, and I'd bet my left nut that most of their parents and grand parents didn't speak that way either.

Moreover, Africans don't speak that way. For all intents and purposes, I live with a Cameroonian woman. She is as appalled by this complete rejection of the most elementary rules of grammar--as part of a more comprehensive rejection of education in its entirety--as I am.

Why do black people feel that white people speak properly?????
To me there is no proper way of speaking because no matter what the subject is if you know what your talking about we all can sound intellegent and if we dont we all can sound ignorant.

I guess this way of think can be like how some northerns think when they hear a southern speak, they think he's dumb,slow,country...little do they know.

On the rilla my nilla fuck dem' cracka's...

hey, who dat iz? who dat rite dere??

I'm funna fuck dat bitch right dere..

Sometime we should just give credit where credit is due. I host functions and have business meetings with Corporations on a daily basis. They do speak properly.

Most blacks that I work with, when speaking properly tend to lighten their voice a la Bryant Gumble. The educated and professional caucasians try to speak with a certain eloquence in their twang. Therefore making them sound more sophisticated. Ultimately, their knowlege and use or the english language is vast.

This is my experience.

no, it's not feelings. people are saying that from their life experiences

i know a lot more black people that use words that aren't in the dictionary than white people

it's one thing to have an urban/hood accent when using real words, that's cool

but, lol, niggas aren't even using words, man.

I made my statements based on the caucasians that I interact with on a daily basis. People from all over the globe. My statements are also based on the blacks that I interact with that speak properly. people in the hood not withstanding. This is my reality.

What am I supposed to do base it on Movies and Television??:smh:

If you feel that they don't speak properly that is your opinion and experience homie.

Anecdotal evidence doesn't make it true. You are only using what you have experienced as if that is the totality of a group. If I only met Black people who spoke "standard" English then I would assume that Black all Black people spoke that way based on my experience, but the truth is that your experience is limited to a small segment of society and that segment doesn't represent an entire group.

I personally have met people from all backgrounds who do not speak standard English. As a matter of fact, there is only a small segment of American society who speaks standard Englis our rather newspeak.

That's a good rebuttal. You're right. That's also the answer to the question "Why do black people think white people speak properly????"

If I had to assume, I would say that most Americans speak standard American English, and that it's not race specific

Hopefully Kanya lets the thread die now

It seems like you are all taking this statement and applying it to the wrong white people. I was born and raised in the projects and my grandmother tells me that I talk like a white person. Not the white kids in their teens and early twenties. Not the white kids that bump Chamillionaire and 50 cent. When my grandmother tells me that I speak like a white person, she means that when she was growing up, people of color (not just african americans) didn't and couldn't obtain a firm command of the eglish language. When she says that to me, she means that I sound educated. While I don't agree with her implication that you have to be white to speak properly, I do however understand how and why she would have come up with such a twisted view. All the white kids that walk around saying dude and like every five seconds are not speaking proper english just as many of us aren't speaking it. Thats my two cents. I hope someone responds to it.
