How Do Women Really Want To Be Portrayed In Music Videos?

It's been said a million times that you ladies don't like the disrespectful way you're portrayed in most music videos, but it's rarely ever expressed how you want to be portrayed instead. :dunno:

I'm set to start shooting a new video soon for a very sensual track and would like to know (straight from the source)... How do you really want to see yourself portrayed? Thanks in advance, ladies!

BTW: This is the song I'm shooting the video for http://www.zshare.net/audio/5110823e9dd748/

The same way they were portrayed back in the 80's with the likes of New Edition, Lionel Richie, etc. Even Rick James didn't have women in thongs ass shaking all the time in his vids.

the ones in the videos typically act like they are. No need to have classy women in bullshit videos, it makes no sense. Leave videos as they are, with hoes doing hoe roles.

I like the way Ne-yo does most of his music videos...or maybe its just me ... Alot of it has to do with the lyrics though...if a man is singing about "I dont love them hoes and I skeet on they back and superman that hoe" even if the main videogirl is Mother Theresa herself in her habit and all the garb that goes along with nunnery...I am sorry to tell you... No woman would be perceived in a favorable light set to a soundtrack of that nature no matter what visual you put with it:smh:.

I love this Ne-yo song...the lyrics are encouraging, the girl is beautiful but shown in an everyday light... and it all seems so romantic and sexually charged at the same time...

Black artists in the 80's were heavily censored to a far greater degree than their White contemporaries. Were it not for artists Prince & Rick James there would have been little if any representation of Black sensuality/sexuality at all in the 80's. Lionel Ritchie's & New Edition's music didn't call for sensual imagery. I should be more specific: My question pertains more to music that does have sensual/sexual content... Surely there a more female friendly way to present sex/sensuality in videos? Right?

You are SO right about lyrical content!

LOL! True...

How about showing women as mothers and wives? I don't think that sexuality should be taken out of videos. But women and men are multi-dimensional, so videos should reflect that.

One of my favorite videos is David Hollister's One Woman Man because of that.

I kinda feel you... one video that disappointed me was "Bed"...Am I the only one that thought the video didn't quite match the song?

The whole time I am watching the video thinking, "Did the director really just reuse a treatment that he meant to give Tony Rich but never got around to it?"

A song like 'One Woman Man' is easy to portray a woman as a wife or mother in the video, but what about a song like 'Bed'? And secondarily, not all women are wives and/or mothers. Single/childless ladies need love too... lol. j/k

Exactly! lol... I think the artists who have presented sex distastefully have made it hard for any artist to present sex at all.

I'm not going to front... THIS video set a great standard on how to present sensuality in a video. IMO one of the dopest sensual video ever... great balance of all the needed elements to pull off a sensual video... More brothas need to take note from this joint.

Thank you TnE22 appreciated.

The videos of girls half naked or naked in hottubs or sweaty dancehalls have become rather boring. Not that they were ever that exciting to begin with.

You can still sell the fantasy with out all the ass shaking. Just my two cents.

Peace

Agreed... While doing the video treatment for my next joint, guys kept coming up with all this cliche' shit stuff that was just plain tired. Personally, I prefer to shoot with just one woman at a time... One artist being flanked with a gang of strippers just spells L-A-M-E to me.

MING!!!!! All of those are my jams and who is that brother that sings Soul Sista again- I had his CD but lost it a long time ago!
All of those are amazing and artistic- Soul Sista especially. Soul Sista has the same lush feel of the photography in the Noire thread.

Bilal sings Soul Sista... He really needs to get himself together and put out some new music. Him, D'Angelo and Maxwell must be smoking the same thing! All of them are Missing In Action. :dunno:

Hey, I can't leave the female artists out... THIS video is also one of my favorite sensual videos EVER!!!!!

 ..and was it Cherish where she had that hypnotic mermaid imagery? That's my girl right there.

Speaking of Maxwell- This is by far one of my favorites in terms of style. It loses a lot on youtube but to see it in hi-def the interplay of brown skin colors, background and the freeze photography are spectacular. Sensual still life

Sorry don't know how to embed

Yeah he's having a lot of fun in those bubbles- maybe too much  I love that song.

Yeah Maxwell, Bilal, D'angelo please stop smokin that stuff and D'angelo stop eating all that pork brotha! We need you.

If we could get all of the above + Lauryn on a master cleanse maybe we could save soul music and hip hop. :)

I'd go with simplicity.I would think the video should complement the song not be the song. Subtlety works.
Most videos I find that you lose the song period.

Its a song like this yes. This is a beautiful example of what is missing from video's nowadays. Simple and elegant and you lose nothing. Everything meshes.

Indeed! These are other great displays of affection in a sensual video...

I agree we need more balance but the video hoes aint goin nowhere. Also I think its apples and oranges to compare portrayal between R2B and Rap vids. The subject matter is different. Sorry, but wives and mothers aint 'gon work in "Ass Like That".

LOL @paradoxical statements in this thread.

As long as they are women who will get naked or half-naked for money.Music videos will always protray women like that.

True... but even R&B videos have gotten real reckless these days. Not enough creativity across the board. Too many people think that the sollution to gratuitous sex in videos is no sex at all... I couldn't disagree with that more. I think it's all in the presentation.

Bump ^^^ because there's some great music in this thread and for the cable deprived the embedded videos are very very cool.

Thanks Ming and Thighz and Lady S!

Imma be like

All the women in this video are great-looking and definitely on point. There's a couple famous females in it too.

(isn't the best version but the better ones aren't embeddable)

That's how women should be represented in videos. It's a shame the dude who made this song isn't as popular as he should be.
