No FEMA. Severe Central Texas flooding

NBC 5 Investigates has learned an inspector from the Texas Department of State Health Services visited Camp Mystic to conduct an annual safety inspection just two days before deadly flooding swept through the camp.

The state said those inspections included a check of the camp's emergency plan for disasters, including flooding.

State inspection reports released Tuesday showed that during last week's visit, inspectors found Camp Mystic did have a written disaster procedure plan. The report said the camp had records showing staff and volunteers had been trained on those disaster procedures. Among the details in the procedure plan were instructions for campers on what to do if they need to evacuate and assigning specific duties to each staff member and counselor.

Under state law, camps are required to post their emergency plans in each occupied camp building.

The state checks those plans but does not keep a copy, so the agency was not able to provide more detail about the specifics of what Camp Mystic's plan included.

The reports released Tuesday show that state inspectors also determined that the camp had adequate disaster plans and staff training in the previous two years.

Camp Mystic has not responded to a request regarding information on its safety plans.

As of Wednesday morning, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said they are still searching for five campers and one camp counselor from Camp Mystic.

Officials have not released a list of the children who were reported missing or killed in the flood, but six North Texas families whose daughters were among those who died have shared brief statements talking about the impact their children had on the world and their unimaginable loss.

This wasn't a NOAA/NWS issue. They had extra people on staff and sent out alerts the way they were supposed to. People are getting too caught up in online propaganda, be it left or right. The problem was, those camps shouldn't have been built on a flood plane after this had already happened before. It was also the fact that, locally, the people in that area voted against storm sirens outside claiming it was too expensive. You know how for most people in this country, if there's a weather emergency, those sirens go off outside? Well, they don't have those because they didn't want to pay for it. I hate Trump's government as much as everyone else but that wasn't the issue here. A flash flood warning for that area was issued 3 hours before it happened.

this is the worst kind of news, i know they are 'natural' disasters, but the human toll is not just for those who pass, but for those who are also heavily impacted in a very bad way.

shout out to the people of texas.
Half the country is placed in areas that don't absorb water well, it's limestone under a thin layer of dirt in alot of states, when rain hit constantly it's a wrap.

Also keep in mind the weather changes create storms, when it's hot mixed with cooler air in a area like north texas it's a problem. I don't think they could have planned for this, the camp sits at a downward slope so rain is hitting areas that can't absorb water too well.

In florida even with 6-8 of rain, the water is gone within a few days due to soil and heat, Texas isn't like that.

The weatherman this morning talked about purchasing a NOAA radio (never knew there was such a thing). He mentioned many versions are battery operated and get 24 hour alerts nationwide. He said even some had hand cranks to power them if the batteries died.

I wonder if the NWS/NOAA cuts will dismantle this also

Didn't know you could still buy these. This was the type of thing you would find at Radio Shack.

This was most certainly a political issue. TX was given money By the Obama and Biden administrations for this very issue, storm sirens. They refused to use the money for them but also refused to return the money

Add to it that Drumpf made cuts to NOAA and this was a very difficult situation to anticipate and manage.....

It also doesn't help that fema wasn't activated until 3 days later and they're being instructed to let the state lead and manage the situation......

Fema has decades of experience managing natural disasters across the country...... but, no let the wildly inexperienced and clearly inept TX state people lead the way.......

Make that make sense

You can find these at thrift stores for some reason. I got 2.

Mexico sends aid to Texas following deadly flooding

A spokesperson for the Mexican city of Acuña — which is across the Rio Grande from Texas and more than 140 miles from the most devastated flooding areas — said in a social media post on Tuesday that the city has sent a rescue team from its civil protection and firefighting units to Kerr County, Texas, to assist teams from the U.S. with search and rescue efforts.

You didnt dispute anything I said lol. I didnt say it wasnt a political issue. I said it wasn't a TRUMP issue this time because it wasn't. It was the locals that opted not to install sirens and not evacuate. The weather service sent out alerts as they were supposed to. That was my point.

Weather warnings gave officials a 3 hour, 21 minute window to save lives in Kerr County. What happened then remains unclear.

Given the cuts Drumpf made it stunted the ability to forecast or predict the floods were coming. But also that NWS is severely understaffed

"Additionally, as of the flood event, the San Antonio and San Angelo NWS offices, which serve the affected area, were operating with 10 vacancies out of their full staffing complement of 33.

Notably, the San Antonio office lacked a Warning Coordination Meteorologist, a vital liaison position for communication between forecasters and local officials."

You got mfkrs trying to make up for 30% of the workforce.

Conversely neither the city nor the county issued their own weather alerts via the IPAWS alert system that sends alerts to cellphones... .

An overburdened NWS office had to do it.

There were numerous failings here and even if Drumpf didn't do anything wrong, ( I still think that he did), but as a leader he has yet to make THE STATEMENT.

"Thoughts and prayers from my family to all the families that are affected, to the ones that lost loved ones and to all anyone that had to witness or experience that first hand. There were mistakes or shortfalls somewhere in the system. I have appointed X,Y, and Z to oversee the investigation and to make recommendations so that we are able to act quickly and more effectively when the next weather event occurs."

All that mfkr said was, it's a tragedy and I don't think my cuts to NOAA had any effect on the response.
