How rare is it to bench 225? (NFL Combine Standard)

You do push/pull workout??

I tell people all the time, if you want a big bench press you better have big numbers on back exercises to match... you can't lift what you can't balance/support, and you absolutely have to have a strong back to support those big bench presses...
Yep. My back workout is short but heavy. Lower back is messed up but not from lifting. From combat.

In HS I was tall and sickly skinny, but my chest was my body part that has always responded the most and thr fastest. Hit 225 in 10th and AR one point could do 5 or 6 reps. That was a huge point of pride for years
These days I pretty much only use bands and dumbells, and that's WHEN I actually find the time and energy to work out. No way I'm hitting 225 on an actual bench these days....that shit went away with my dunking ability.

Every once in a while if a store has their upright chest machine on display and usable, I can actually lift a lot of plates.

.
Yeah, I think that’s in general for most Black men with chest gains while legs(calves) are easier for other groups. I workout my calves and abs every workout.

Who in this thread can't bench press 225?
No shame. Be honest.

I can’t. I haven’t lifted since I was in college. Even then, I could barely do 200 multiple times. I think I maxed around 250. I never liked how lifting weights made feel afterward. My strength was in my legs.

I’m strictly cardio and calisthenics now of days. I run at least two 5ks a week. Working on getting my overall pace down to 8 minutes per mile. I’m around 8:15 a mile right now.

   I said in my first comment that whenever I see this type of video posted on social media I see guys with these stories, first off nobody walked into their gym the first day and was throwing up 225.....TWO PLATES (225 POUNDS) has always been a milestone for people who first start working out so I just can't believe guys who say it's nothing or even normal
It's not normal. This goes super deep into it.

Everytime i've gone to the gym there is at least one other guy there working out with 4 plates on his bench.

It is not uncommon.

Yeah there's always one or two guys that have 3 plates on the incline also but I'd say unless you're going to a specific muscle head gym then 75% of the guys in a regular gym aren't pushing up 225

He breaks it all the way down to people, I'm saying even in the active gym going community 225 is still not easy and something most men are pushing up. I just laugh at the comments from people who can push up 2, 3 and even 4 plates acting like 225 was never a goal for them

Most high school seniors that play sports can get 225. Pick a sport.

Video is correct but its misleading...it includes females for one and looks at total population figures which include people who have never stepped into a gym and never attempted a bench press...there are super strong farm laborers all over the world who can't bench that weight because they have never benched before...after a few times in the gym getting the form right and getting their body used to it, they would bench it with ease

Among men who actually go to the gym and do the bench press, 225 is not that rare at all

Bruh, you've become a super cardio athlete. Well done!
Be sure to take care of these joints.

Appreciate that.

Yes, the joints do take a punishing. That’s why I only do two a week. I need recovery time. But also, being mindful of my shoe choice now. I got some real slick running shoes that reduces foot to ground impact.

Overall, my health is good. That’s what I really care about. Me improving my running times is me challenging myself, but also residual effects of caring about my health to an extended degree.

Gym terminology 3 plates means 3 plates on each side, like when Buk said 4 plates he was talking about 4 plates on each side
I was talking about 4 plates total

I ain't doing 4 on each side, thats a guaranteed permanent residence in Snap City.

:lol:we always say 2 plates, 3 plates, 4 plates...from your name I thought you was pushing big weight up like that

I don't think there's that many people who can bench 225, especially for reps. 10 years ago, I set a goal to bench 100lb dumbbells, it took me several months to get it. I've been back in the gym for a year now and I haven't seen 1 person use those 100's, not even for rowing. I've seen people bench 225 but it's usually for a low number of reps and don't go up from there.

I was just telling my family they don't make men like they used too. These young men are nowhere near as strong as I was even in more 30's and 40's. My daughter said "it's just for the Gram".

this guy dont know what the fuq he talking about...he need to come on down to da south and watch these behemoths on the line.....IN HIGH SCHOOL!!! 225 IS THE WARM UP WEIGHT. everybody on our HS line was over 225 with the top bench being 450+
225 is the perfect weight all way round though. that 30 plus rep goal is a monster to obtain. i dont event try any more to lift heavy weight. shoulder injuries stay with you bruh. but saying only x ampunt of people in the world bench 225 is saying some folks aint trying nor playing sport bruh. if you play any hard hitting sports, you at least 225...period. otherwise people will laugh you the fuq off the team.

bruh...

do you know how many people there are in the world?

over 7.5 Billion....

and you talking about nikkas in high school in the US that play football?

look up statistics and how they work please before you post shyt like this

I was in the gym with some old miss baseball players. Those white boys were putting up numbers so I believe any southern black player that says their high school team could do it

225 is a whole lot of weight for most people and even most male gym goers. Not because it's incredibly difficult to get to the point where an average male could push it, but because most guys and probably most guys in gyms aren't really spending a whole lot of time on trying to get there. I think it's something a much larger percentage if guys could do if they put in the work, but without doing that, 8 out of 10 guys are gonna struggle. It's like running a mile or doing 40 pushups You'd think everyone can do it, but by far, most people (grown folks at least)are gonna gassed and stopping after less than half a mile...cause most people ain't putting in that work.

I don't do weights anymore, but used to a lot for 20+ years, and except for in the high school weight room, I don't think I ever had to wait to use a bench....there was always one free.

High school, we had to wait...

I would agree if it was 315 maybe.

I first hit 2 plates somewhere in my mid 20s and can still do 2 plates to this day at 54yrs old.
I've always wanted to hit 3 plates but never quite got there, and the older i get, the less I care about the numbers.
most workouts i tend to go up to 265-285 and pyramid back down
Every few weeks i'll bench heavy just to 'test myself' and see where I'm at.
fact is, i've always been more of a dumbbell bench presser
Have not pushed up 100lb dumbbells in over a year, yet i know for a fact i can still hit the 100s for 2-3 reps.

that part about developing your back and triceps is spot on. Bench press is not just a chest exercise.

I'm 53 and about to get back in the gym for most things like deadlifts and squats I don't plan on going above 225 but for bench press I still would like to eventually like to get up to 315

you sound like me
I love to deadlift and do the other compound movements
difference is, with age, i just train smarter, take more time/days off, sometimes lift moderate weights, etc

You are messing around in the neck area doing bench press which isn't a natural movement. It creates an arm bar left or right, you have to be careful to keep your neck still. It is similar to Chauvin putting his knee on your neck.

The same thing with squats, loading weights on your shoulder which compresses your spinal disc, bad idea. They can bulge out into the spinal cord. I would do leg presses in a machine or plyometrics. Once the disc in your spine become compressed or foraminal narrowing, it causes all kinds of problems. You can become paralyzed and not even know it.

Trying to walk around as the Terminator is not always a good thing, unless you need the bulk and are gettting paid, I would use these machines sparingly.

I recall a similar stat about worlds population that can bench over 300lbs. My best friend and I use to train to reach that weight, he did but I gave up.

I havent bench pressed over 200lbs since high school maybe a few times after. I can probably get a good 185lbs right now if I tried at my current weight of 199lbs. I do more pull exercise than I do pushing these days.
