Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. trailer

Hope Halle can put this behind her since this movie is now guaranteed to lose about $100 million and the rest of the world didn't agree with the casting of an iconic character. Wasn't her fault, it was the rat.

Already don't like Disney for destroying star wars(now marvel can be added to that), but hate how they stay setting up black women to fail. They then demand the women go on the 'going at fans' tour which then sours people on them before these women have a chance to get started. Fuck the rat.

I'm not sure exactly what Disney did wrong here?

Seriously? They make an iconic character unrecognizable. They then attack the fans(not only here, they attacked all of Asia and the rest of the world). They then lose money. She is the face of it.

Halle got memed to hell because of them. Had those lazy bastards created another story(see encanta and Moana) she could be a pioneer for her own princess and doesn't get talked shit about her.

Halle has a beautiful voice and deserved her own story/songs. They could have done this new cartoon(which they will hide on their failing streaming service) while giving her a new princess and legacy(or done a live princes/frog). This is worse than how they did the reeva actress. :smh:

Matter of fact, her in the princess and the frog would have been $1 billion more than likely. Well, as long as Disney don't disney and add some weirdo shit to it.

Ok I guess.

I think she looks great as Ariel and recognizable.

How did they attack the fans?

She could still play those other Disney characters down the line. Those live action versions are still on the table. There many talented black women who could get those roles.

And "fans" as we now have limitless evidence will find any reason real or imagined to complain about any and everything.

I haven't seen the movie yet so I can't comment on quality.

But it's kinda sad that we all knew fake fans would wild out before an image was even shown regardless if this movie was brilliant in the end.

And on that point? Your right Disney knew it was highly likely to get killed by so called fans.

But I'm not happy about stupid is doing as stupid does.

Maybe by doing this now? They can move forward and do whatever they want with the ethnicities of the characters THEY OWN ANYWAY.

I don't see Disney as the bad guys here.

At least in this specific instance.

It's these deluded racists that should be the ones we should be angry at and ignore.

this ....on top of that they changed the whole story to some woman empowering shit and made all the men in the show look like idiots.

It's not about racism at all. People expect icon to be like they know them. Keep it 1000. If they changed Blade to some red head cac, you'd lose your shit. Hell, so would I. That ain't Blade. I like Michael B Jordan, but not as Luke Skywalker. The cries of racism are bullshit. Because right after this fail Spiderman did numbers with a black Spiderman because that Spiderman is a different character than Peter Parker.

Yeah, fans always complain, but Disney is openly hostile and giving people what they ain't asking for then yelling at them and calling them names.

Box office receipts ain't lying.

Yeah, that's Disney being Disney. It's like they ain't even concerned about making money any fucking more. It's all about sticking it to the patriarchy and then yelling at people who don't want to come out to be lectured to.

But it's sinister to throw black women under the bus like they are doing.

Don't do that, you know using characters like blade or black panther as some type of comparison is not even remotely the same.

I don't see the open hostility but like I said I don't get that deep on that side of things. So it's hard for me to understand these so called fans perspective. Most at least from what I've seen? Racist women hating stuff disguised as fandom.

In real life? I ain't meet anyone who had issues with the mermaid movie. I know many who pre orded tix and some even bought out theaters for parties.

I ain't exactly the target audience and I bet the dudes complaining aren't either.

Every one isn't going to like every thing. And for all I know the movie could suck because it sucks regardless of the leads ethnicity.

But many sucky movies have turned a profit and many great ones bombed.

The fact people talking this much about race over a mermaid? I can't take none of that serious.

^^^

This is exactly how I feel about the whole thing.

It is the same. Exactly the same. That's the problem. Folks ain't in touch. Man, I don't want these goofy cacs touching none of my characters. PERIOD. Remember, this ain't just about race. These weirdos could make Blade gay. Make him a woman. So in order to prevent any fuckery, I don't like any fucking swapping of icons. It's lazy and done for messaging.

My daughters are the target audience and they didn't fuck with it. But then again, their pops don't take scraps and that's how they rock too. Give them their own princess or fuck off with the lazy shit. Ain't ariel to them. Hell, my oldest just called out the bullshit(to grandma) while youngest just ignored it altogether. And that's with grandma buying her the new Ariel doll that she just put up somewhere.

And I didn't tell them to like it or not like it. My daughters ain't about to be telling a therapist I ruined their childhood because of how I get down. But I was proud of them for not settling for scraps.

And I agree, plenty of sucky movies turned a profit, but Disney is bleeding money because they are lecturing to audiences and killing IPs. They didn't cut $4 billion because they killing it. This another $100 million or so they burned.

To put this into perspective, the new Barbie movie is about to drop. Them cacs look like barbie and ken. Will the movie do numbers? We shall see. We know Mario did numbers because everyone new that was fucking Mario. Now imagine if they swapped him out and called fans of Mario racist. Or made Barbie and ken Asians and yelled at fans. Seems dumb, right? Welp, that's the new Disney.

And the swapped out actors are the ones who catch the heat and then are forgotten by the rat. :smh:

+++ And if you ain't been paying attention, straight black men are on the chopping block, so it ain't out the realm of possibility for our characters to start getting the business. Hell, all the new IR couples are always black women and white men. They just pulled it again with this movie.

Lookin good

:smh: $570 million worldwide. Can we now admit this was a fail? Given that we seen 2 recognizable IPs -- Barbie and Mario -- be the number 1 and 2 movies of the year, can we admit that Disney left over $500 million on the table by insisting on swapping the IP?

I dare say if they had made Ariel what fans were used to the movie rankings for the year would have been Barbie, Little Mermaid, and Mario 3rd. All over $1 billion though. Worldwide market didn't know WTF was going on with this movie. They knew what Barbie and Mario was though.

Man, If the rat made a Mace Windu series and cast Jason statham as Mace, I'd have to smack fire out of Iger. And no, that's not different.

Lesson for 2024 that Barbie/Mario showed. Stay true or don't do.

I don't think it's that simple.

PLEASE do not under estimate how much that stupid meme and serendipitous scheduling creating a historic ad campaign that drove Oppenheimer and Barbie to numbers no one on this planet foresaw.

So if a studio does another big budget IP movie and it fails that automatically means the movie was "bad"? Or that they didn't listen to fans?

And if a non IP movie is a hit does that mean all non IP is viable again?

Also how the hell do you explain Mission Impossible "flopping"?

I think something you said LONG TIME AGO and I didn't really appreciate is closer to the answer.

LOWER THESE BUDGETS PERIOD.

It's damn near impossible to make a profit now.

Most of these movies didn't NEED a couple of 100 million to be made.

Just make them cheaper.

and DIVERSIFY the schedule!

Always have an animated family friendly movie in theatres at all times.

And use the entire year. Chill with the counter programming stuff.

How the hell you drop a haunted house movie in July????

Why are there no kids movies in theatres in AUGUST!!!???

You know what?

Your right... forget it. They all don't know what they doing. Why we even discussing it? Its hopeless.

i agree and if u look at the box office besides barbie and mario they all did around the same numbers
i mean even now little mermaid is at the 7th place
u take mario and barbie out it would be on the 5th spot

means movies are doing bad in general
so i dont think making her cac would made a difference

All these execs getting exposed for lack of vision and foresight. And worse still noy understanding the current landscape

And now we see my man Iger and Zaslav both on some old white man sh*t leadership wise.

I still don't think listening to fans too much helps.

Now HIRING fans and lovers of these characters?

I'm 1000% down for.

But after Covid and then streaming and now AI?

we gonna see a whole lot of trash that was kept behind the scenes of the inner workings of all this.

Again to me it ain't even about quantity or quality

It's all about the money and decision making.

Sidebar...

Making Ariel white wouldn't have done sh*t.

And if it got the SAME numbers with a white lead the excuse would have been too many live action remakes.

I actually would have done Frozen or Pocahontas or Brave live action first.

Would have been cheaper and less headache.

Especially Brave.

I would have also tried to have Marvel and Pixar or Pixar and Star Wars work together on a big screen animated adventure

It really is simple. It was oppenheimer that benefitted the most from the meme. Go back and look at the projections for Barbie. Oppenheimer is the surprise. Barbie isn't. We both saw Barbie coming a mile away. Especially after Mario. No one saw a movie that is basically talking for 2 hours(oppenheimer) making over 700 million. We all called Barbie.

It's just no coincidence that the 2 biggest movies of the year are easy to recognize IPs. If you downplay that, you're making the same mistake that has cost these folks billions in recent years. It's alot of denial going around because folks don't want 'toxic fans' to be right. Well, follow the money.

Mission is on it's 50th movie. It's in that fast and furious realm.

But you're right about budgets. Lower them across the board. And when you mention family friendly, you know some studios insist on the LGBTQXYZ shit inserted so parents are cautious as hell right now on that shit. From the trailer, Wonka might do numbers. But what was the budget?

We discuss it because we love to be entertained and they keep failing us. And it's nice to be right when we can look back at our posts.

How can you say making Ariel white wouldn't have mattered when it's documented that Asians passed on the movie and folks screamed  "racism!!" We ain't even going to count the domestic cacs that were like "Who the fuck is that?" Come on now. The entire marketing campaign was yelling at fans and calliing them racist.

You keep telling me that the entire industry is down. And I agree. Ticket sales down 25 percent since 2018-19. That's why they just report the money, not tickets. And I keep telling you that changing shit and then yelling at fans while calling them names drives people away.

They adding hundreds of millions of dollars to this total by making Ariel white and casting Halle as a new character. Shit would have been like printing money. And like I said, Halle's mermaid could have been a main focal point.

We having two different maybe three different discussions on the same point simultaneously.

So let's go courtroom on this.

Mr. Cisco please answer the question succinctly.

Do you have a personal issue with Disney casting a Black actress as Ariel the mermaid?

No, why would I? From a personal standpoint, I don't care about The Little Mermaid as an IP.

Now let me ask you, from a personal standpoint -- be completely honest --- how would you feel if a favorite black character from your favorite IP were swapped out for a white or Asian or different sex? I'll provide my answer first. I'd be hot as fish grease(I already provided my Mace Windu example).

Let me ask you another question and be honest. Do you think Barbie or Mario do over $1 billion if the main barbie and ken were black(we know the movie had black barbies I'm talking the main one) and Mario was black? Remember, the promotion would be spent yelling at fans so take that into consideration while answering. I'm using black instead of Asian or Hispanic because Ariel was changed to black.

Man, I'm looking at this from a business standpoint. Fans of IPs don't want major changes or major swaps in their IPs. The successful ones have proven this. This is the easiest shit to get right and these stubborn asses keep failing over and over.

The swap thing the other way argument never works.

Blame racist cacs for decades of abuse and misrepresentation and disenfranchisement. We don't even have that many characters to swap out. They used to color black characters white in comics for years "by accident". The caricatures stereotypes racist tropes. Trust me I've had to hear that garbage take since I started collecting and writing

So that's bullsh*t.

that being said Ariel ain't white she is a mermaid.

Her race or ethnicity has no agency to who she is.

But I ain't looking at money.

That sh*t is just dumb

Why make Mario black though? he is Italian and they knew better than to keep the accent RIGHT? It doesn't make sense to switch him.

a black Ken would have worked if it fit the story.

I still haven't seen it but there was every kind. But according to the story a white Ken fit best. Apparently it mattered.

I'm for the STORY.

Whatever fits.

Folks HATED Miles Morales at one time John Stewart too.

I don't believe in enabling racism and ignorance even for profit.

Now the point you and vicious made about change JUST FOR CHANGE SAKE?

is difficult for me.

It's case by case.

I generally agree don't just change it to change it.

But especially Ariel it shouldn't have been a big deal.

I don't consider it a GOOD thing it flopped because they cast a black girl.

Yes changing the race of the character to Black was bad for business because the world is racist.

We all know this.

Also changing a character from Black to white isn’t in the realm of the discussion because of the majority vs the minority. That’s a very weird question and concept to come from a Black person because we’re smarter than that and we know how race a racism works.
