Good post ballscout1, I would have loved that type of info ten years ago. But today it inspired me to rethink who I was ten years ago.

Few here are old enough to remember when wearing cheap blue jeans first became fashionable in the Black community. It was in the aftermath of the riots of 1967 and 1968. Before then, jeans, in our community, were just considered tough working clothes. After the riots, Blacks adopted a new attitude concerning their spending habits, collectively vowing to a new frugal minded mentality. Money was to be used for enhancing the condition of the race. Clothing stores adapted or closed, Black bookstores sprang up all over town.

Sadly the lessons we learned were short lived. America responded with the biggest weapon they had in their arsenal, the Black exploitation movies. Suddenly, we took to the malls and mail orders to dress like Superfly, wore men's perms, ridiculous clown wear with fur trimmings, high "Cuban heels" and years later the blue jeans morphed into "designer jeans" costing absolutely insane prices! And gym shoes costing ten dollars to manufacture but retailing for hundreds! Why are we so fucking easy?

No offense to the OP of the other thread, but as I listened to the guy narrating, it stuck a nerve in me so violently that I was compelled to respond in a separate thread, in hopes it might resonate a little louder. If you don't know me, I'm an African amerikkkan expat living in Central America. The great thing about Central America is a man's wardrobe typically consists of a dozen T-shirts and a dozen pairs of shorts, a pair of gym shoes and a pair of sandals. All this shit the guy on that other video is pushing, sounds so laughable to me now. Having a tailor on a first name basis, making sure your watch tells a fashionable story about the man it's strapped to. Fuck living in the Western world! This is the very shit I wanted to get as far as I could get away from! And in a couple years when I move internationally again, all that I own will be stuffed into one large suitcase and one carry on. Every single dollar I spend goes to the enjoyment of life, nature, or helping the very lowest one percent stay alive; .... not to buying an expensive watch, a tailor making my suits or 400 dollar Mezlan gators or 300 dollar Jordans.

On your death bed, you'll reflect, and measure the quality of your life by the memorable experiences that took your breath away. The places you went, the things you saw and did. The friends you made that weren't flipped from the same cookie cutter as you who opened your eyes to new ways of seeing the world and life. That first time you fed a REAL starving child, or put shoes on others, or held a beautiful girl who didn't speak a common language but you found ways to talk with your eyes and hands. There are places in the world that you can go, with a one semester, 4 credit hour, Red Cross First Aid & Life Support card, and a self assembled medical supply box, and you're gonna be the closest thing to a doctor these people are ever gonna see!

Many won't get my message right now, but time and life experiences makes an entire new person, with an entirely new outlook, out of you every ten to twenty years. The time will arrive where you'll better understand what life has taught me.......... That nobody ever, while laid out on their death bed said, "man, I really regret that I never copped me that Rolex".

PS - Man we getting hurricaned into oblivion down here, and now they say there's even yet another en route. Please ask donald trump to send some paper towels.

Time is a monster that cannot be reasoned with. It responds like a snail to our impatience, then it races like a gazelle when you can't catch a breath.

I have made every life experience into a story...and I spit my knowledge...in microseconds...to any one..that's willing to hear my journey...a picture or a story...is all life is...good postin..brah

Foh I’m Coppin retros until the casket drop
You think? LOL, too bad I'm not likely to be here in twenty years to laugh at you and wave this post in your face, but try to remember that comment till 2040. Twenty years from now, not a single molecule that you're comprised of today will remain. You'll be a completely new person with every though, desire, plan, fear and hope rearranged. A slew of things that you find to be of utmost importance today, you'll no longer give two shits about ... and vice versa. You won't, but you SHOULD trust me when I tell you that you have no idea of who you will morph into in twenty years. If we didn't learn, change and evolve based on our experiences and circumstances, we'd have been extinct LONG ago. Your adaptability is the reason you (and I) still exist.

Sounds a lot like my wardrobe if you added a few old Navy sweaters, some formal wear, and a few extra pairs of shell toe Adidas. My sandals are a busted pair of sneakers with the tongue removed and rubber straps in place of laces.

Muffuckin right.. brah
Right!!!

My issue with self righteous views like this are they act as if its one or the other and what YOU like, is somehow flawed in THEIR view. Time and place are everything, but why cant I wear a pair of "expensive" shoes while also on vacation??? Why can I not drive an "expensive" vehicle for the pleasure of it??? This wag the finger in the face of people that live life how they see fit is annoying as fuck. Do you and let other people live how they like. They may get to your view eventually but let them live and experience shit for themselves.

Toni Morrison said it best, “not strong, only aggressive...”

That has always defined modern society for me. We’re so obsessed to be seen as value to everyone else, that we forget who we are are.

Descendants of kings. The original man.

This white faux capitalism is nothing more than a rouse in the grand scheme of YOUR life, but look at how much people are so obsessed with because it provides “security.” Nonsense.

Hopefully some are ready to receive the information and value their greater purpose in life beyond the status quo.

If that works for you cool

Me I get everything I want for the enjoyment of me or my fam.

I like dressing nice and getting a fresh haircut
I don't do it to impress I do it because ain't no feeling like it especially when you know you look and smell good.

I manage to do this shit while donating to food banks and other organizations every month

You can have it all if you want it all

Dont let people fool you into thinking they know what's true happiness.

True happiness is a personal thing only you can keep it real with yourself and decide.

Right!!!

Please.... point out that sentence you refer to where I tried to tell YOU how to dress, drive, accessorize or anything else. I'll wait. da dee dah dahhh, you done looking for it Mt Yukon? You didn't find it cause it's not there. It is YOU who wants to impede my right to see the world as I see it a tell about it. The entire post is about what I think, not what you think, feel or do. As has happened now about twenty times on BGOL, you guys read something, and make up meanings that aren't there and expect the OP to be responsible for what YOU imagined. So it is YOU not letting ME live MY life and tell about it,, not the other way around. You said QUOTE: " Why can I not drive an "expensive" vehicle for the pleasure of it??? " Where did I say ANYTHING having to do with what YOU drive or buy. Point that out for me since I can't find it. Where did I even hint that those who buy expensive cars are somehow wrong? What I said is that's NOT FOR ME! Nothing more, now.... tell me what is so wrong with me choosing how I love MY life. And why should I be barred from telling about it?

That's the right answer... some dude named Yukon accused me of shaming or trying to manage people who wish to pursue a different path... Nowhere in what I wrote did I try to tell anybody what THEY should do. I just spoke on the world as I see it. I don't care if the guy flushes every dime he ever makes down the shitter. That's on him and his business. I'm just typing away a story about my own personal vision and path and he would argue my right to do even that. That's BGOL.

"... Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.”

As I've gotten older, I've come to the attitude, whatever makes you happy that doesn't effect me. It's not the same for everything. I feel like I am a materialistic person. I like having the new Xbox. I never bought shit to impress people, I bought it because I wanted it. Most of my money nowadays goes to books and old movies. I like nice clothes. I'm comfortable in Levi's and -t-shirts but if I have to wear a suit, it will be nice. I just talked to a friend yesterday who told me he bought his first TV in 3 years. There's no way I can live a simple life like that but I do admire people who do.

I'm an introverted person, I don't know if that was my nature or did I become that way because I spent a career surrounded by conservative white people. I was more out-going when I was young but now all I need are a few close real friends. I recognize the difference between friends, associates and co-workers. I'm happiest to be around my kids, maybe it's narcissistic because their love is unconditional towards me.

Very relatable.

No problem.

Life is fluid so happiness is a moment and whatever makes you happy is the right thing.

If it changes later it wasn't a waste of time--- it made you happy

That's all that counts

Fam, I wasnt specifically going at you, as you were piggybacking another thread where I assume something was posted about this issue. But I've grown tired of those self righteous articles/videos/podcasts about this subject and they typically come from a place where they're attempting to judge and shame those that don't see the world as they do. If this aint you, then cool. No dis intended. Just this subject as a whole can get real judgy.
