Mike Miller, the former Knicks interim head coach, could resurface as Jeff Van Gundy’s assistant in Houston if Van Gundy holds off John Lucas for the Rockets’ head coaching job, according to sources.
After Miller was passed over by the Knicks for the permanent position, Miller opted against staying on Tom Thibodeau’s staff to see if he could land another gig. Miller has been Van Gundy’s assistant on Team USA’s World Cup qualifying teams.
Van Gundy has spoken very highly of Miller and thought he deserved to remain as Knicks head coach after he did well taking over for David Fizdale in December. Miller weaved a 17-27 record before the season shut down on March 11.
Van Gundy, when not broadcasting, has moonlighted as part of Team USA’s qualifying program since 2017. He’s also had ex-Knicks assistant Josh Longstaff on his USA staff.
Conceivably, Van Gundy could hire his brother Stan, who interviewed in New Orleans. Neither Stan nor Jeff Van Gundy were considered for the Knicks job.

Meanwhile, Jeff Van Gundy is no lock to make a long-waited return as Rockets coach, battling Lucas. Sources believe one concern is Van Gundy, who still lives in Houston, getting full approval of the Rockets players such as James Harden and Russell Westbrook.

Lucas has been a Rockets assistant coach for Mike D’Antoni and has a lot of player support. Ironically, Thibodeau worked under Lucas in San Antonio and Philadelphia in the early 1990s.
Lucas has been on Thibodeau’s staff in the past. According to a source, the Knicks head coach was amenable to hiring Lucas this time around but Lucas was embroiled in the Rockets’ playoff run.

The Knicks have not ruled out adding a couple more player-development assistants — which is the area in which Lucas has always shined. Royal Ivey, who was on Fizdale’s staff and is being paid for next season, has not been ruled out.

If the Houston Rockets hire veteran NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy to their vacant position, recent New York Knicks interim head coach could be among Van Gundy’s assistants, per Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Van Gundy is believed to be one of three finalists to replace Mike D’Antoni as head coach of the Rockets. The other top candidates are John Lucas, who was D’Antoni’s director of player development in Houston for the last four seasons, and Dallas Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas.
Of those three, Van Gundy has the most prominent experience as a head coach, having worked over parts of 11 seasons in that capacity for the Rockets (2003 to 2007) and Knicks (1996 to 2001).
If Van Gundy is the hire, Miller could potentially be part of his staff in Houston, according to Berman. His report:

The shared USA Basketball experience of the 58-year-old Van Gundy and 56-year-old Miller could certainly be a connection worth monitoring, should “JVG” ultimately land the Houston job. By comparison, the Knicks were 17-27 (.386) under Miller, and 4-18 (.182) with David Fizdale.

According to Berman, Van Gundy’s top competition for the position with the Rockets appears to be Lucas. Having worked in Houston for the last four years, Lucas seems to have the initial endorsement of All-Star guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook, per several media reports.

There is still no definitive timetable for a hire to be made.

Stan Van Gundy, who worked for TNT this season after being fired as president and head coach of the Detroit Pistons in 2018, has agreed to a deal to become the next coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, according to multiple reports. Van Gundy is getting a four-year contract, according to The Athletic.
The 61-year-old Van Gundy also previously coached the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic, compiling a record 523-384 (.577) over 12 NBA seasons.
“I’m excited to join a talented New Orleans Pelicans team,” Van Gundy tweeted. “It will be an honor to work with our players and to work for (owner) Mrs. (Gayle) Benson and (VP of basketball operations) David Griffin, (GM) Trajan Langdon, their staff and the great people of New Orleans. I can’t wait to talk to our players and get the process started.”
Van Gundy will replace Alvin Gentry, who was fired by the Pelicans in August following a 30-42 season that ended without a playoff appearance. New Orleans had 2019 No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson for only 24 games during his rookie campaign due to knee issues.

Van Gundy’s brother Jeff – a longtime NBA analyst for ESPN – interviewed last week for the head coaching vacancy with the Houston Rockets. He coached them for four seasons before getting fired in 2007; he also coached the Knicks for parts of seven seasons from 1996-2001.
The Post reported Monday that Jeff Van Gundy could hire former Knicks interim coach Mike Miller as an assistant if he gets offered the job with the Rockets.

Assistant coach sounds dumb. These "kids" don't need a big brother, they need a mentor that can lead them to be great. A veteran team may need a young coach that can relate and won't ride them but these young players, especially Zion needs someone to instill discipline. Hubie Brown was a great older coach for that reason and JVG is great coaching the USA select team.

The fbi investigator (Phil Scala) assigned to handle gambling nba official Tim Donaghy says that the nba would have been exposed as being as choreographed as the WWE had he been able to complete his investigation.

This investigator Phil Scala is no joke. He was the supervisory special agent in the fbi's Gambino La Cosa Nostra squad and was an important figure in the dismantling of the Gambino Crime Family in NY and Sicily, and the arrest and conviction of John Gotti.

I dunno if y'all are on it but that WHISTLEBLOWER podcast is unbelievable and such a great listen for any fan of the nba... as a fan, this will honestly piss you off.
