Just my 2 cents on the analytics vs old school ball agrument
The problem with going 100 in either direction is bad because they both have a place. Analytics can get you some quality wins and even a playoff run. But great players tend to step up in crisis moments and defy logic, reason, and stats. They defy analytics and go super saiyan. That's what makes them great.
Take Kobe, there were probably plenty of games during the down years where Kobe might have gone like 8/30 and had a bunch of missed contested inside jump shots. So the analytic crowd would look at the numbers and see definitive proof that those are terrible shots. But what they don't see is 7 of those 8 made shots probably came in the 4th quarter when the team needed them the most.
Or Lebron's block in the finals. Analytics would dictate that the smart move would have been to go for the foul and hope for missed free throws. But Lebron being a great player, said fuck stats and turn the gear to superman mode and came away with one of the best blocks in finals history.
All the great players have moments like that. Jordan, Magic, Bird, Curry, Kobe, etc. That's what I mean by great players defying logic in crisis moments.
I honestly think that's the reason the Rockets haven't been able to get over the hump in the playoffs. Analytics can get you there, but once you're there you need to unleash your star player to do what the fuck he does best. Fuck the stat sheets. When the game is on the line they don't need stats. They need to get out their own way and let Harden go off.
