I thought he just went to California. Go there, lay low until the trial is done, come back. This happened 10 days after testifying. That's plenty of time to leave again OR get some work. He stayed.
But they did catch the second suspect, so two of them are alive. Probably have the third one soon. So when they all start talking, then what?

They're already laying this out as self defense. He shot them first. They just returned fire.
It's possible that the cops caught them doing something else that probably had some real time associated with it; and this was their way out with only a few years attached at its worst.
