Amazon is in the advanced stages of placing its second headquarters in Northern Virginia, The Washington Post reported on Saturday, as the retail giant closes in on a self-imposed deadline to make the closely watched decision.

The Post reported that Amazon has held detailed discussions about the possibility of opening its second outpost in Crystal City, including how quickly it could move employees, its physical plant and how it could make the decision public, people close to the process told the publication. Amazon's planning was more in-depth than it has had with other locations in Northern Virginia, and other cities across the U.S., The Post stated.

In fact, the retail behemoth is said to be so serious about Crystal City that the area's premier developer, JBG Smith, has pulled some of its buildings off the leasing market to make way for Amazon, The Post reported, citing unnamed public and private officials close to the process. It's possible that Amazon may also be in similar talks with other cities considered finalists, the report cautioned.

Separately, sources told CNBC that Amazon and local officials had a "very productive" and "very long" conference call on Friday. A potential incentive package may include a "very generous" transportation incentive to alleviate traffic fears, as well as educational aspects to ensure Amazon has a pipeline to a skilled workforce.

These sources told CNBC that a final decision is "close" and may come down to Northern Virginia or Austin, Texas — or perhaps a split between both cities.

Amazon declined to respond to CNBC's request for comment, but a spokesperson said the company "remain[ed] committed to making a final decision before the end of the year."

Making the decision 'with your heart'
As the Internet retail giant continues to assess 20 locations on its shortlist for its second headquarters ahead of its year-end deadline, CEO Jeff Bezos said this week that the decision is ultimately one you make "with your heart."

In an on-stage interview in New York on Thursday with journalist and author Walter Isaacson, Bezos did not leave any hints about which of the cities on his shortlist he is leaning toward for HQ2. But he clarified that after Amazon has all the data to back up its options, in the end the decision will come down to a gut feeling.

"Ultimately the decision will be made with intuition after gathering and studying a lot of data," Bezos said. "[T]he best way to make it is you collect as much data as you can, you immerse yourself in that data, but then you make that decision with your heart."

Over the past few months, Amazon executives have reportedly revisited several of the locations on its shortlist, including Newark, New Jersey, New York City and Chicago, according to an October report in The Wall Street Journal.

The list below are the 20 locations currently in the running:

  • Atlanta
  • Austin, Texas
  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Dallas
  • Denver
  • Indianapolis
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • Montgomery County, Md.
  • Nashville, Tenn.
  • Newark, N.J.
  • New York City
  • Northern Virginia
  • Philadelphia
  • Pittsburgh
  • Raleigh, N.C.
  • Toronto
  • Washington, D.C.

Woooooooooooooow. Smh.

You thought traffic, cost of living and gentrification was bad before...

Yeah, somebody would be crazy to relocate there for a job at the headquarters.

If true, this will be one of those wins that feel like a loss...I thought the traffic would scare them away plus the fact that they already have huge cloud operations here (figured they wanted a totally new spot)...and Md loses to Va again...wonder what NOVA gave up to get it?

Taxes. While I think part of it is also politically based, MD taxes are much higher. Plus Crystal City is right off the metro. Depending on where they put it in MD that wouldn't have necessarily been the case.

THAT is the question at hand. All of these locations are giving up tax incentives, costs of infrastructure, and other benefits to land a business owned by the wealthiest muhfucka on the list. Amazon is bringing very little to the table in the big scheme of things and the article is talking about education and a skilled workforce???? They're gonna be automating the hell out of these facilities! What workforce, robot maintenance? The Labor requirements are shrinking every year and these competing locations are NOT going to get a return on their investments.

19,2808.4%Black population of Arlington,Va....ok hopefully some will get the job's there, like I know the state has probably given them tax breaks out of the ass and some other under the table benefits for coming to Crystal City,Va

Md gets screwed for giving a little bit of a fuck about workers and the poor....granted it would have made 270 hell on Earth if they had put it in Montgomery County...its not a done deal though and I dont think even Virginia can give away as much as Texas...they got bad traffic in Austin too though....Crystal fucking City...I am imagining 66 and 395 now

Raleigh don’t have the housing for such a big move from Amazon.

Would have sent all the natives of the city right out and it’s already shifting.

Wherever Amazon goes, the change of the city is going to be dramatic.
Yeah. I was reading the average salary is going to be over 100k, so that’s going to turn any city on top of its head. And I think over 50k jobs.

This right here ^^^
Thank gawd they're not coming down here to Raleigh
The Raleigh/Durham area is already getting too saturated with people now
I can't imagine 50,000+ more
Traffic is getting almost as bad as DC & ATL

:smh::smh::smh:

Atlanta didn't need it the traffic is already fucked up in the city.
iirc one of the key requirements was being accessible to public metro. For the amount of money Amazon is going to invest they could have bought Marta a train just to shuttle people to the new headquarters and also incorporate the streetcar.

I don't know how I feel about this. First off, that traffic is gonna be hell. Metro on the blue/yellow line is gonna be standing room only. Cost of living is going to ratchet up even further than it already is. Southeast DC across the river, watch out... Accelerated gentrification. I might have to put in a resume anyway. I hope my prime packages arrive same day from now on.

There are already Plenty of ways for a household to make $100k+ in the DMV because of the high ass cost of living and the abundance of jobs. If the average salary at Amazon is 100k, then that can only bode well for wage competition.

They don't have housing for 50k more workers, they already got all those condo buildings filled with Pentagon and private Defense contractor workers. Amazon workers will have to flood the surrounding area that is on the Metro. It'll be a nightmare. I don't see the upside of allowing them to come considering the tax break package and strain on area resources.

Of the PROJECTED 50K jobs, how many are going to be six figures? That's marshmallow fluff.

Regardless, that type of economy is a major shift anywhere. Even if it’s 100 people out of 50k that’s makes over 6 figures, it moves the average income and cost of living up significantly. Plus, most people that would be working at HQ will not even be natives of the city or area. It’s going to be outsiders that probably have already established salaries and income.

There's way more Blacks in that area than 19% when you include the whole dmv

I thought it was going to be tysons corner

Very true, that's an excellent point! All they are going to be doing is moving salaries to different locations.

That’s the scary part about these big tech companies.

Raleigh’s economy is good, but bringing those type of salaries to a place that is not ready will be a major burden on the city. This would directly affect the surrounding areas as well.

These tech companies have enough money to turn a small town into a booming city. So shifting salaries is not authentic or beneficial, IMO. In the long run maybe, but lots of gentrification is going to happen.
