It's also the highest grossing Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) movie in its first week, the biggest opening for an African-American director, highest rated superhero movie of all time, among many more records it continues to break.
In a recent Vanity Fair feature, our very own Tobago-born Winston Duke has been named as one of the “ones to watch”. Also from Tobago, Sekani Solomon, a motion designer, worked behind the scenes to help create some of the movie’s memorable effects.
With Black Panther scoring sales above 41% above Fast and Furious 7, Black Panther ranks as the biggest opening weekend in Trinidad and Tobago and the #1 movie in the world.

It's also the highest grossing Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) movie in its first week, the biggest opening for an African-American director, highest rated superhero movie of all time, among many more records it continues to break.
In a recent Vanity Fair feature, our very own Tobago-born Winston Duke has been named as one of the “ones to watch”. Also from Tobago, Sekani Solomon, a motion designer, worked behind the scenes to help create some of the movie’s memorable effects.

It’s been almost two months since the Black Panther movie premiered at the Palace Multiplex Cinema in Montego Bay. The first-ever All Black Marvel movie has silenced all its critic as it continues to dominate in theaters all over the world, sending the black community into a frenzy. Black Panther broke records in Montego Bay as one of the longest-running movies to be shown at the Bogue Multiplex Cinema and at last reports, has grossed over $1 Billion dollars in revenue and according to Forbes Magazine, it is now the 34 highest grossing movie ever.
Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and was directed by Ryan Coogler. Hollywood, in general, didn’t expect much from the movie as Black Panther was once considered an unknown C class comic book character, that would only pull in dismal numbers comparing to the other franchise Marvel movies series such as Thor, The Avengers, or Ant-Man, but boy were they all wrong!
On February 15th, 2018, Black Panther opened in Montego Bay with a well-organized Grand Opening Premier produced by Montego Bays’ business and networking organization, Corporate U supported by various media houses and journalist.

The Premier was held in a well-branded tent at the Palace Multiplex parking lot, so as you walked into the plaza it was obvious that something magical was unfolding as persons could be seen in groups dressed in bright, glorious African styles clothing including headdresses and dashiki. The elegantly decorated tent featured music, food, and drink, and of course a red carpet that leads into the cinema. Patrons were encouraged to have their pictures taken with models made-up to represent African warriors as the DJ kept the energy alive with afro-beats and African inspired music, while the Host for the evening, actor/comedian Marlon “Adubbs” Brown, brought laughter to the live performance segment that also featured a local dance group, a poet, giveaways and unforgettable masterful drumming that was perfect for the mood of the occasion.
As the time came closer to the main event, a massive exodus from the tent started lead by both the drummers and dancers, it was like a river of colors as patrons flooded the lobby and made their way to their respected auditorium, 1 or 2 which were both sold out days before the event. Heads were held high, full of pride, anticipation and bright smiles reminding us that Montego Bay, despite the state of emergency, is indeed still the Friendly City.
Many times we see a movie that has a tremendous amount of hype surrounding it but does not live up to the expectation, this was not the case with Black Panther, as it continues to smash records and has changed the way Hollywood sees and treats Black movies and talent.
When it’s all said and done, this was a great movie and deserve all the success it’s continuing to receive, as people all over the world have found something resounding in this project as the African diaspora celebrates see themselves depicted on the big screen in a positive light for the first time ever – “Wakanda Forever”.

Disney-Marvel’s superhero tentpole “Black Panther” has launched with a massive $169 million in about 70% of international markets.
The opening gave “Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman as the king of a mythical African nation, a worldwide total of $361 million through Sunday.
South Korea led the way with $25.3 million, representing the fifth biggest launch of a Western title in that market — ahead of ahead of “Dr. Strange” and “Thor: Ragnarok” and already topping the entire runs of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Ant-Man.”
In the U.K./Ireland, “Black Panther” took in $24.8 million and is the second-highest opening for a Marvel title, behind only “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” It has already overtaken the entire run of “Justice League,” “Captain America,” “Thor” and “Iron Man” and broke the record for highest grossing February opening weekend of all time.
Mexico was the third-largest market with $9.6 million,
followed by Brazil with $9.4 million,
Australia with $9.2 million,
France with $7.7 million,
Indonesia with $6.5 million and
Germany with $6.2 million.
The Netherlands posted the highest grossing day ever for a superhero film and the highest grossing February opening weekend ever.
“Black Panther” opened in first in nearly all markets, except for Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Bosnia, Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia.
In Africa, “Black Panther “set records with the biggest opening weekend of all time in both East Africa and West Africa.
In South Africa, it was the highest grossing Saturday ever in industry history.
The “Black Panther” opening weekend has already exceeded the entire run of “Guardians of the Galaxy” in Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, The Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. It posted the highest grossing February opening of all-time in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay.
“Black Panther” will open in Russia on Feb 22, Japan on March 1 and China on March 9.
“Black Panther” is the second biggest international opening of 2018. Universal’s international opening of “Fifty Shades Freed” took in $98.1 million in 57 markets last weekend, which had been the best international launch of the year but Raman Hui’s family-friendly adventure, “Monster Hunt 2” earned a stunning $190 million to top the China box office over the first three days of the Chinese New Year holidays.
“Detective Chinatown 2” also earned $154 million in three days, and took the crown from “Monster Hunt” on Sunday. Data from Ent Group showed fantasy “The Monkey King 3: Kingdom of Women” earning $79.9 million, and actioner “Operation Red Sea” scoring $70.3 million. Chinese-made animation title “Boonie Bears” earned a cool $40.9 million in fifth place.
Together the top five films scored a record-breaking $543 million — more than double the score achieved in the equivalent Chinese New Year weekend in either of the last two years.
Other than “Black Panther” and the Chinese titles, the second weekend of Universal’s “Fifty Shades Freed” led the rest of the pack with $47.7 million to lift its international total to $190.8 million. The best performance came in Germany with $7 million, down only 19% — and enough to top “Black Panther” by 23% in that market.
Fox’s “The Shape of Water,” which has a leading 13 Oscar nominations, took in $12.3 million from 3,709 screens in 40 markets, including openings of $3.3 million in the U.K., $2.2 million in Italy, $2.1 million in Spain and $1 million in Germany. The international total has hit $38.7 million.
Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” generated $11 million from 5,789 screens in 65 markets, led by $4.1 million in France, pushing the international total to over $205 million.

Are The Oscars Scared Of Disrespecting Black Panther?
The Academy’s announcement of a Best Popular Film Oscar hints at wider fears of shutting out blockbusters and superhero films: Is Black Panther the reason for the change?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, best known as the home of the Oscars, have been struggling to find their place in the world for the past decade. For many years, it was common practice for the Academy to reward mainstream blockbuster movies like Star Wars and Jaws alongside the expected critical favorites like Annie Hall.

As Hollywood’s priorities changed and the Oscars became a means for indie films to get good publicity, the Academy focused less on populist movies, and so the gap between critical and commercial hits seemed to grow only wider. Audiences weren’t happy.
After facing criticisms that they were shutting out more populist fare, the Academy expanded the Best Picture category to ten nominees (later changed again to be up to ten nominees based on voting) in hopes of allowing for more general audience friendly movies. It could mean almost anything, from the little indie movie that made bank (Get Out) to the family-friendly cartoon (Moana) to the fluffy popcorn fare of the Summer (Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again!). If a film makes over a certain amount of money, does it immediately become popular and therefore in a different category of excellence from the Best Picture nominees?

Ultimately, it’s hard to overlook the cynicism and elitism of a decision like this. It instantly reinforces the outdated notion that something can’t be critically worthy if it’s a mainstream success. Regardless of the earnestness behind such a decision, introducing a whole new category so the Academy won’t have to worry about angering people is a cop-out and it diminishes everyone involved. Clearly, they’re concerned that Black Panther may not make the cut, but rather than waiting to see what happens, they’re putting a safety net in place that’s riddled with holes. The assumption is that fans of Black Panther will be fine with any old award the film gets, even one as blatantly condescending as this. As evidenced by the reactions on social media, this wouldn’t be the case. Audiences know when they’re being talked down to and so do creators.

Think of rousing big-budget action epics like Mad Max: Fury Road (which was nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Picture) or this year’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, a film as well reviewed as Black Panther. Plenty of critics will have these films on their Top 10 lists of 2018, as will general audiences, yet we’ve all but accepted that most of these films aren’t going to get love beyond that at the Oscars because they aren’t perceived as prestigious. Instead of confronting that bias, the Academy has decided to introduce a category that further strengthens it.
A Best Popular Film category only reinforces the divide between critical and commercial success. It insists that the two concepts are mutually exclusive and that no amount of reviews or audience love can make something like Black Panther worthy of the same level of love as, say, the latest Winston Churchill biopic. If films like Black Panther are left to a side category, what’s to stop Best Picture from becoming clogged up with the same middlebrow prestige fare that audiences are so bored with in the first place?
The thing about Black Panther’s Oscar chances could be completely legitimate if this is something Marvel is willing to campaign behind and ride a wave of cultural impact all the way to the Kodak Theatre. Yet the Academy aren’t even going to give it a chance to prove itself without throwing in a condescending back-up option to prevent an anger that they’ve only exacerbated with this announcement. It's disrespect disguised as its opposite. They haven’t given their younger and more diverse membership the opportunity to vote for the kind of films that wouldn’t usually make the cut, and that’s a major disappointment given how much progress the Academy had made in recent years. After a box office run that saw the film gross an astonishing $1.344 billion worldwide, Marvel and Disney’s Black Panther will make its Netflix debut in September. Black Panther will however be one of the last Disney movies released on Netflix as the studio prepares to launch its own subscription streaming service.
A phenomenon upon its release earlier this year, Black Panther’s impact was felt well beyond the box office, as the movie became as much a cultural cause as a blockbuster. Due in large part to the film’s cultural impact, many have predicted Black Panther will have a real chance to contend for this year’s Oscar for Best Picture, becoming the rare superhero film to receive such recognition. Perhaps at least partially in response to the buzz over Black Panther getting an Oscar nod, the Academy recently announced the creation of a new Best Popular Film category, with an eye toward giving more audience-friendly fare a chance to win gold during awards season (and hopefully draw more viewers to the Oscars ceremony).

With Black Panther garnering Oscar buzz as well as basking in the glow of a massive box office run, Netflix subscribers will get a chance to watch - or re-watch - the film beginning on September 4, as revealed by Netflix Twitter account Strong Black Lead. Black Pantherjoins Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Captain America: Civil War on Netflix’s currently available line-up of MCU films. But as previously mentioned, with Disney looking to launch its own streaming service, there’s no telling how long the above titles will remain available to Netflix users.
According to previous reports, Disney’s deal with Netflix will cover MCU films through Ant-Man and the Wasp, but will end with next year’s Captain Marvel. This means 2018’s other MCU blockbuster, the universe-shaking Avengers: Infinity War, will also become available on Netflix at some point likely late in the year. It’s possible that around Christmas time families will be able to gather for a truly awesome Netflix double-feature of Black Pantherand Infinity War.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences added the "outstanding achievement in popular film" category this year, but have yet to announce the criteria. Nobody knows how nominees will be decided, or whether or not it's an insult to be recognized in this new category. Still, Boseman has made it clear that he has a certain preference when it comes to his film Black Panther.
Many would argue that Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther is the most popular film of 2018 and perhaps even the most popular film in the MCU, breaking box office records throughout its theatrical run. The film inspired a huge cultural movement around Wakanda and all that the hero Black Panther represents, not only in the United States, but around the world. It would make sense, then, that many would think of Black Panther when the Academy announced its plans for its newest popular film category this summer. And for the first time, Marvel Studios is putting together a serious awards campaign in an attempt to get Black Panther the accolades it deserves.

But according to Black Panther’s lead actor Chadwick Boseman in an interview with THR, the film is Best Picture material only. The actor explained, “We don't know what it [the new prize] is, so I don't know whether to be happy about it or not. Many think negatively of the popular film award, arguing that it is an insult to audiences and filmmakers alike and that the move reflects the Academy’s attempts to cater to popular audiences and drive viewership to its televised awards ceremony, which has seen a marked decline in viewers over the years. Others, such as Mark Wahlberg or Jason Blum, have made efforts to openly support the category and urge others not to judge it too quickly. The conversation has grown so heated within the industry that the Academy is already considering scrapping the plans for the new category completely.
Ever since plans for the popular film award was announced, everybody’s attention turned to Black Panther, a movie that many believe would be a shoo-in for a nomination and win in the category. But as Boseman’s comments point out, a lot went into this film that some Academy voters might push aside as a “simple” popular comic book flick. The issue also raises the question – even if Black Panther was the most popular film of the year, does that mean it is undeserving of the Best Picture award?
Black Panther sparked important cultural and political discussions after its release due to its illumination of certain social issues. Now, it is at the center of an entirely new debate: the politics of Hollywood’s awards season. If the Academy decides to keep its new category in “outstanding achievement in popular film”, there’s no doubt that it will be very interesting watching what films get nominated for which categories and who the winner of this brand new category will end up being – and perhaps most importantly, what exactly that win will mean for the film industry as a whole moving into the future.

Imagine being so absorbed in an ideology or belief system, that reality itself is no longer truth to you. The response says it's not the worst movie, the box office says it's not the worst movie...so what makes it the worst movie? I'd respect a racist if they just came out and said "it has too many black people and I don't like that." At least that's fucking honest. Dog whistling and making fake comparisons to try to prove that Black Panther wasn't successful is just pathetic.
