Business at the box office is booming …and so are ticket prices, according to the latest second-quarter figures from the National Association of Theater Owners.
NATO reveals (via Deadline) that blockbusters like Avengers: Infinity War — which arrived earlier than normal in April — helped give a 23 percent leap in year-over-year box office revenue, meaning that the first half of 2018 is almost 10 percent ahead of last year.
The total box office haul for the April/May/June second quarter period ended up reaching a record $3.335 billion (with the first half of the year having now reached $6.189 billion.)
As well as the almightly Marvel mash-up, it's safe to say genre movies such as Deadpool 2 ($310 million), Incredibles 2 ($440 million), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($265 million) and even Solo: A Star Wars Story ($207 million) have all been responsible for the record-breaking second quarter.
And although there was a 3 percent decline in the first quarter, the February-released Black Panther still currently holds the title of the highest-grossing North American movie of the year with $699.9 million.
With box office receipts sky-high, perhaps it’s somewhat unsurprising that stub ticket prices have risen too.
Last year, the average ticket price rose to an all-time high of $9.18 towards the end of year. Now, NATO adds (via Variety) that average ticket prices in North America have risen to $9.38, a 22 percent uprise from 2018's first quarter average of $9.16 and 43 cents more compared to the prices from the same period last year.
Although if you're in either Los Angeles or New York, you may feel slightly cheated, as ticket prices are (in some case) already considerably higher than $10 a pop. In any case, we'd say it’s all the more reason to go get yourself a MoviePass or join AMC's A-List while you still can.
