what happens if they not win ANY Oscars...

forget THAT

what WE gonna do if it doesn't get the BIG nominations?

I thought we would be cool with them winning and accepting NAACP awards.

MB Jordam has to get best supporting for Killmonger

Set Design, Costume, Make Up...even effects.

Screen play, picture and director

but I am VERY leery

sidebar: did wonder woman get anything last year?

You know I forgot about Michael B Jordan's performance.... He could get a nomination, but it would be tough.

Heath Ledger won for his performance as the Joker in the Dark Knight and his interpretation of This new type of Joker was revolutionary.

Getting a Supporting Oscar nomination for a Superhero flick.. Michael B Jordan's Killmonger would need to be on that type of level. While I think his Character was truly a great tragic villain.. I don't know if performance is on that level. I actually wish that Michael B Jordan's adult Killmonger showed up just a little earlier in the film ... I would have loved a couple more scenes with him and his girl or him among the crew. Maybe a couple flashbacks...

If he did get a nomination... Personally I would view it as a do over for them Overlooking him for his Amazing performance in Fruitvale Station.

I think Set Design, Costume, Make Up are Given Nominations and given Wins. I think Infinity Wars will likely get nominations for Effects, Sound, and Set Design.. but Lose to Black Panther on Set Design.

As for for Screen play, picture, and director.....

I don't see it getting best screen play... but I just don't see how it can't get a nomination for Best Picture. Black Panther has that GET OUT type of Buzz to it.

As for Director... I'm on the fence. Ryan's Direction in this movie was outstanding and his ability to convey Africa... while shooting in Atlanta... Is freaking insane. But man.... Getting a nomination for Directing a Superhero flick is unheard of.

Christopher Nolan didn't even get a nomination for the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight is a fucking Flawless movie. Fucking FLAWLESS!!

And shockingly Wonder Woman was completely snubbed by the Oscars.

But even with Wonder Woman getting Snubbed... I would be fucking Shocked if Black Panther gets the same treatment.

we should be...

but wouldn't that or shouldn't that be the FINAL nail in the coffin of NOT only the Academy Awards/Oscars but Grammys, Emmys etc?

I mean if Black Panther gets shut out?

I think a whole segment of the population

the population is FINANCIALLY DEPENDENT ON

would completely disavow them...

the ratings were down AGAIN this year

and Rotten Tomatoes carry more weight than these awards.

I could see this doing permanent irrevocable damage to the Oscars legitimacy.

Don't forget about Best Original Score. I think that's a definite nomination and win.

There's a lot of politics involved with the Oscars and one thing to keep in mind is that Ryan Coogler turned down an invitation to join the Academy. He also didn't attend the 2016 ceremony when Stallone was nominated for Creed. Instead, he went to a Flint charity event with Ava DuVernay. Some petty Academy members will hold this against him. Maybe not enough to prevent him from getting a best director or best picture nomination, we'll have to see.

If black Panther gets completely shut out... shit would get very interesting. The only way that I’d see that coming would be if one of the stars got hit with a METOO allegation like what happened with James Franco.

James Franco should have gotten a Nomination for the Disaster Artist. He was brilliant in that Flick.... but that METOO shit took him down.

This...

That’s why I do think that flick gets a best picture nomination but I don’t think he gets a best director nomination....

But Ryan’s Time is coming.....

A Best Picture nomination at this point is almost a given with the financial and critical acclaim.

They expanded the field a few years back to 10 with the express reason of getting films in that were actually popular thinking that would attract viewers.

Add in the factor that Oscar ratings were down again this year with a bunch of films that didn’t make much impact at the box office I don’t see much chance that the #3 highest grossing film of all time doesn’t get one of those noms.

Avengers Infinity War Black Panther 2...

Bigger & Blacker

* Wakanda Forever....

@slam @ansatsusha_gouki @godofwine @fonzerrillii @largebillsonlyplease @raze

Disney KNOWS what EXACTLY what the f*ck they doing...

they pushing Wakanda ALL THE WAY to the FRONT.

Infinity War may actually beat Titanic and give Avatar a SERIOUS run....

that 2nd weekend will tell what it will do ...& how the worldwide releases r set up ...

They might get an Oscar for special effects or something like that, but all it'll take is one movie with a white person crying for two hours to guarantee BP doesn't get a best picture award. This movie is full of black folks AND it's a superhero movie, two categories the Academy isn't super eager to give awards to.

As long as it gets props at the NAACP image awards, that's all I care about.

not interesting...

it would be a watershed moment...

especially after get out (which was lessened by the screenplay win)

cause that would be their version of a trump election win

a middle finger to a segment of America that is already looking for a reason

(like they do not have enough already but i digress)

It would be like an assassination attempt on Kaepernick while he was playing on an NFL field.

seriously

these internet militants wold be called the hell out.

cause that is sadly?

enough to get black people off they collective asses.

I don't think Black Panther gets shut out, but at the same time, the Oscars are only meaningful to a small segment of the population. The average person on the street doesn't need the Academy to tell them Black Panther was the best picture of 2018 or that Ryan Coogler is an incredible director.

Wins and nominations would be nice, especially for people who go unnoticed by the general public like Nate Moore, Hannah Beachler, Ruth Carter, etc. but the movie did its job and then some. More black boys and girls are going to pick up cameras, start writing stories, and do great things. Mission accomplished.

you are 100% right...

but I think sometimes things just take on a bigger meaning...

I think Black Panther breaking box office records was IMPORTANT to the black community on MANY levels...

that money is going STRAIGHT to DISNEY

but the TITLE?

It belongs to US

and somehow someway

right or wrong

that DOES mean something to Black People.

So I DO think Oscar recognition would be important

(industry awards on a whole is a WHOLE other thread topic)

but specifically BP and the Oscars I think it breaking records and the critical acclaim?

And it didn't win ANYTHING?

I think it WOULD be a big issue.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Oscar snubs shouldn't be our red line. Let's say Black Panther wins 6-7 Academy awards, including Best Picture and Director, then what? We still won't have black studio executives with the ability to green light black projects, foreign distributors won't be interested in black films unless they're from Marvel, and black projects will continue to struggle for funding.

Remember when Halle and Denzel both won Oscars in 2002? That meant something to black people too. It didn't bring the change many of us hoped though. Regardless of an Oscar win or snub, our attitude towards Hollywood should be: "See what Black Panther did? Pay attention to these black filmmakers and screenwriters. Give them the same resources as everyone else. Hire more black executives like Nate Moore. Listen to them. Promote your black projects overseas. Some of you A-list black movie stars need to stop treating black writers and directors like they have contagious diseases, especially when your careers ain't what they used to be. If y'all can't give us these things, we'll stay our collective asses home and won't watch your award shows either."

I'm all for Black Panther being nominated and winning Academy Awards, just long as folks understand that a few wins doesn't mean the war is over.

dam that keep quiet movie made 50 mill...

17 mill budget ...those low budget horror type flicks r good investments...they rarely fail ..

A Quiet Place was a really good movie. Saw it at a Thursday preview. Those high concept films are usually letdown by execution. This was done just right. Krasinski is a really good director. It’s an almost totally silent film and you have to know what you’re doing with the camera to tell the story. Not sure how it’ll play with the BGOL crowd — there was some stupid white people stuff that almost took me out of the film in the first ten minutes but after it got going in the 2nd act it was really good.

That 40% hold is really good for Ready Player One. Wasn’t sure how that second weekend was going to be, but it got good word of mouth out the gate.

Tyler Perry’s recent films are usually budgeted around $20 mill or so, but he’s his own entity so it’s tough to confirm.

Blockers made back its budget but it opened on over 3300 screens, so that P&A budget was probably through the roof. That number is separate from the production budget so they’ve got a ways to go before the studio is in the black. Plus it’s not a true tent pole so I’m sure the exhibitors were able to get a nice chunk of that opening weekend vs. what they have to do with Marvel type films where they’re almost showing it for free the first weekend.

just got back from seeing it. I agree with you. I was expecting a bit more horror though, it wasn't really that scary.

i ahve a really good bootleg bout to post it...

the movie had captions...? i kinda skimmed thru it ...

i didnt know that ...

Yeah, it wasn't a straight horror film the way I think the marketing solid it as. That's probably why it only got a B cinema score. Off that I'm interested to see what kind of legs it got in the coming weeks. It's a little more a family drama that leans on more pure suspense... I kept thinking back to M. Night Shyamalan's Signs when I was watching it.

Yeah, it's an almost totally silent film. The characters communicate mainly through sign language.

I think I watch this gif like 30 times in a row

But sadly, they don't want to give black people Oscars for positive black representations. Other than Louis Gossett jr. in An Officer and a Gentleman, Jamie Foxx in Ray (I don't recall what Sidney Poitier was in Lillies in the Field), the majority have been negative representations of black people

  • Hattie McDaniel played a maid
  • Halle Berry played a whorish woman (I don't really know what to call that role)
  • Denzel Washington played a psychopathic narcissist criminal cop
  • Mo'Nique played a horrible mother who pimped out her daughter
  • Lupita Nyong'o played a slave who got raped repeatedly
  • Moonlight was all about gay shit

I'm going to see black panther again for the 13th time tonight with my girl, but I'll see a quiet place, blockers, and Ready Player One with tickets I purchase for black panther next week.

I'll see them, but they won't get my black panther dollars
