Star Wars The Last Jedi (SPOILER Discussion thread)

Okay.. I thought that this movie was an EXCELLENT science fiction film, but- for me, at least- this storyline (and, because of this movie, The Force Awakens) would be FAR better as an expanded universe/ non-canon novelization of what happens post EP VI.

I LOVED:

1. The Sith Acolyte/Kylo-Rey fight. That scene brought back memories of trying to beat those red mfs on "The Force Unleashed."
2. The light speed jump directly into enemy battlecruisers. Always wondered what would happen if someone turned their ship into a hyperspace missile.
3. The ability of the Jedi to create force projections of themselves across nearly unlimited amounts of space.
4. Poe's handling of the X-Wing in the opening scene. Beautiful.
5. The MILF hips on the purple-haired lady. Don't judge me.

I HATED:

1. Glaring continuity problems between the first and second movies. HOW did the Empire go from "on the fringes" to "First Order taking over" in the space of the few minutes between the first movie's ending and the second movie's beginning?
2. Grumpy hermit Luke hiding out on the island. That ain't Skywalker. I don't think he ever would have chosen to kill his nephew (or ignite a lightsaber, or sneak into his bedroom while his nephew was sleeping, etc.) no matter how much darkness he saw.
3. The new emo goth Kylo. Sith are pure passion, hate, and lust for power, not weepy, moody, emotionally unstable psych ward patients. Yes, Vader stood out because of his conflict, but we didn't even see a hint of that conflict until the end of EPV and EPVI. Kylo doesn't need redemption, he just needs a Xanax. His "I'mma kill off parents until I'm mad enough to be a good Sith lord" is on some depression, angst-filled BS.
4. EVERYBODY needs training to handle swords and fighting styles, much less light sabers.
5. Leia's "Superman" flight scene. Yes, powerful/ trained Jedi can create force bubbles to withstand the elements/ environment, but I think it could have been done more effectively as a problem within the ship (plasma explosion where she saves Ackbar or something like that. Speaking of Ackbar..)
6. Ackbar should have been given a better death. He didn't even get to observe whether or not the bridge blowing out was a trap or not.
7. For Snoke to be the Supreme Leader and all-powerful, he sure got murked pretty easily. How do you read minds and not notice your moody apprentice twisting the business end of a lightsaber toward your chest?? How does your security team put up a better fight than you do???
8. Constant discussion/reliance on the fact that Finn was in "sanitation" and knew the layout of the ship from having worked in it. Yes, he could have been an elite trooper, and sanitation could refer to them mopping up innocent civilians, etc. but still??
9. Movement away from developing Finn's force sensitivity. I was SO hoping he would take out a hidden lightsaber from his jacket and engage in a stunning fight scene, but NOOOOO....

Here's some Star Wars women for your time (yes, they are melanin-deprived, but we haven't quite caught up to sci-fi cosplay just yet):

Did anyone mention that Kylo Ren DID NOT shoot down Leia's ship. He hesitated. But it was too late.
Everyone is saying he cannot be redeemed... I dont know about that.
I think it might play out like return of the Jedi. Kylo and Rey might team up to defeat Snoke. That's if Snoke is still alive.

my bad on Revan - I confused a deleted episode from Clone Wars with Rebels ep on Malachor

Vador wasn't being an empath - empaths can only read emotions not information

"your thoughts betray you..."

Yoda could have ran any where - he picked Dagobah for its force properties

www.starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dagobah
Dagobah was a planet in the Dagobah system, and one of the purest places in the galaxy within the Force...
...after the Great Jedi Purge and his subsequent failure to defeat Darth Sidious, Jedi Master Yoda went into voluntary exile on Dagobah. Here,Yoda lived near a cave infused with the dark side of the Force, which kept him from detection by Emperor Palpatine.

Is this what made Yoda crazy?

I agree with your whole post and its similar to my thoughts on the film.

2. Luke was told about Vader and all of his evil and crazy shit that he did. He knew all of that shit, still when he had the chance to strike him down he said no. He still has good in him.
You take that as being Luke's mindset, against EVERYONE'S thoughts, wishes, etc Vader was too far gone. Luke proved that no one is ever truly all the way evil and pulled him to the light.
Take that from his character and then have the shit that they showed in the last jedi is just wrong on so many levels.

3. I judge movies based off of their villains and Kylo just isn't it. Driver is a great actor but Kylo as a character is not fleshed out, poorly developed and overly convoluted. Then they try to pass that emotional mess off as "complex" and its just not hitting home with me.

6. Ackbar shouldve been the one to take the hyper drive sacrifice. "Im passing the torch on to you Poe. You can be hot headed, and thats ok. I am too, you just have to know when to cut losse and point it in the right direction." Cue ship pointing towards first order fleet.

7. If snoke is that adept at using the force as they showed with him using the electricity so casually.... why the hell could he not feel Kylo using the force right in front of him??? Evil monologue or not. Shit was so sloppy.

9. It ain't ever going to happen. They had 2.5 hours and chose to have Finn have the EXACT same story arc as the previous movie. Such a let down

Also.

Shouldve been Anakin to come back as a force ghost and talk to Luke. How touching would THAT have been??? Father son moment about their legacy and how to go forward. Wouldn't be a dry eye in the theater.

gave the movie a 6/10

After rewatching Return of the Jedi... I’ve changed my mind on the Shock of Lei using the Force..

Luke tells her that the Force is strong within his family and in time she will be able to use it just like he can.

Based on that... her use of the force makes perfect sense. It’s not like Force awakens and The Last Jedi happened right after Return of The Jedi.

When Kevin got to the part about Luke and Yoda's interaction, I had to go back and watch that scene again

Interesting spoiler line Yoda dropped.

After he set fire to the tree and Luke was bitching Yoda says: 'that library contains nothing that the girl rey does not already possess!!!'

At its core this was a delicious movie of irony, twist on established norms and a Retcon that, even tho I love the classic trilogy, was very much needed for the story to continue.

I think it’s also cause Yoda knew that Rey took the books with her.

Yoda also said a similar line to Luke before Yoda died in Return.

I’ve been on a Star Wars mini marathon all week.

Started with Star Wars and right now I’m watching Return...

Side note.... how the fuck can I get the unedited/fucked to CGI versions of the Original Trilogy. ..

I don't mean to sound condescending, and maybe I'm jaded from too many movies (& I am also a Christopher Nolan fan), but I wasn't really impressed with those clues/connections.

The salted red sand wasn't unique to me cause it seemed to just rehash tESB, except now with sand. If its sole purpose was to be able to forshadow that Luke was a hologram, that's cool. But I didnt think that was revolutionary. Maybe I'm blinded because I hated The Last Jedi.

The Salt actually fell more in line with the original Japanese originals of the Star Wars. It really was more about the color scheme. The movie really felt like an old samurai movie with the collar scheme.

I think people have hyped up Ackbar way more then he was ever supposed to be... he only had made 5 lines in Return of the Jedi and I’m watchkmg it now.

I think it’s his “it’s a trap” phrase that has made people think he really was this amazing thing but actually he was just a background character.

I fully believe that now that disney owns fox (and the masters to the original trilogy) They will restore them to the original theatrical version and re-release them if not in theaters definitely on dvd/blu ray.

Finn was an elite emperial cadet... who was top of his unite but as punishment for a mission he was put on santitation detail on Starkiller base. That’s why he knows all about the weapons and specific details. I also think that Finn keeps letting people know he is a janitor because deep down he is ashamed of what he did as a cadet. You really need to read the prequel story on FInn. It fills in a lot of gaps.

Is this what made Yoda crazy?
I dont think Yoda was crazy.

I love the way the thrawn/timothy zahn trilogy explains yoda on dagobah.

He had a battle with a darkside jedi on dagobah and defeated him. The reserve or left over dark side energy acted as a perfect mask or cloaking of yoda's force presence on the planet.

1. Glaring continuity problems between the first and second movies. HOW did the Empire go from "on the fringes" to "First Order taking over" in the space of the few minutes between the first movie's ending and the second movie's beginning?

The heck are you talking about... I just watched Force Awakens Monday.

1. The Empire was dead. And the First Order has taken over its place. That was mentioned in the scrolling credits of Force Awakens.

2. The First Order was never on the Fringes. They used their weapon to completely destroy most of the planets that were sympathetic to the rebels. At the end... the rebels only claimed a small victory by destroying one of their bases.

7. If snoke is that adept at using the force as they showed with him using the electricity so casually.... why the hell could he not feel Kylo using the force right in front of him??? Evil monologue or not. Shit was so sloppy.

If the Emperor could sense Dark Vader emotions why couldn’t he sense him coming up behind him and thrownimg him over a railing.
Same situation... also sloppy

I continue to think people are just complaining because it’s the BGOL cool thing to do..

But if you watch the original trilogy it’s got Way more problems but we overlook them because it’s a special movie.. it’s close to our heart.

But I think we all had blinders on...

After looking at Return... I think Snoke died the same way that the Emperor did... but let their ego get in the way and we’re taken down because of it. The Emperor was so determined to catch Luke and destroy the rebellion that he completely overlooked the Ewoks

Also I’ve got to get the fucking original Trilogy... This new fucking Irish Spring ending is horse shit and I’ve got no clue why young Anakin from the prequel is the ghost while... Old Obi wan and Old Yoda are their. That shit makes no sense...

When you look at the release release now... you completely understand why George Lucas had to be stopped.

I fully believe that now that disney owns fox (and the masters to the original trilogy) They will restore them to the original theatrical version and re-release them if not in theaters definitely on dvd/blu ray.
IIRC they can't...
something with Director's Guild rules and they still might need Lucas' permission to change those works

I also recently started watching the Phantom Menace again recently. I was intending to see the whole thing but when Qui-Gon Jinn ran into Jar Jar immediately turned it off.
I don't think Rose is worse or more racist than this

Rose is a real groupie of the Resistance. She could not help showing her emotions and motivations (the animals, the children, Finn) for her actions.

I kind of called it when i said it was implied that there may be some kind of love triangle thing between Finn/Rose/Rey

Mustve been that dress :dunno:

 Mild again. Clone Wars is top 3 in the franchise. Out of respect for Leia's passing. I won't completely shit on this "movie,"this time.
