This movie was executed perfectly.

Rey & Ren are balancing the forces. Confronting their weak force is essential to their growth beyond past Jedi / sith.

They are moving away from the religion of the Jedi and sith, the master of weaponry and lightsabers to the mastery of the force. The religion / lore pitch each on a side that they can not move from. Accepting the focus and mastering it allows them to embrace both sides.

She is not the daughter of “nobodies”. She is his sister. Finn is her half brother. Ren rescued them from Luke’s school before it burned. Luke and Ren have realized that they must destroy the religious aspect of the orders. It’s fanaticizes and pollutes the force creating cyclical war. The past master focused on skills rather than balance. The new masters will forgo the skills like sabers and truely master the force.

Luke, Ben, yoda, and anikin will train and are guiding Rey. Ren is being trained through Rey as a proxy for Luke.

wait...

what???????????????

Who is Snoke in Star Wars?

Michael Lawson

Answered Jan 4

I’m posting this just to see if Disney has it taken down. If It’s still here tomorrow, I was clearly wrong, because I haven’t seen this anywhere on the internet, and there’s no way I’m the first guy that thought of this:

Snoke is the darkness in Kylo Ren projected into the real world by the power of the force, just as he projects himself across the galaxy to skypesex with Rey. Just like Rey, Ben is stronger than he knows.

Ben created Snoke when he was a child to replace his parents after he was sent off to train with Luke. Leia sent him because she sensed a darkness in him she didn't know how to handle, and when she gave him up, that's when Ben turned that darkness into an imaginary
friend/alternate personality, which is Snoke.

People have speculated that Snoke is an acronym for "Sith No One Knows Exists". Well at one time that's exactly what he was. No one knew he existed except Ben for most of his life.

It explains how Snoke was taunting Ben since childhood without anyone ever noticing.

It's the reason Snoke constantly torments and belittles Ben to this day.

It's the reason Snoke projects himself many times larger than he actually is. And the reason he himself is projected as much taller than Ben.

It would explain why only a few people even know what Snoke looks like, and he barely allows anyone in his presence except Kylo and Hux.

It explains why Snoke is split down the middle and battered up to shit.

It explains how Snoke was powerful enough to abuse and mistreat Ben all his life yet Ben killed him easily.

It explains why Snoke could see Ben's every thought and intention, yet still looked surprised when he was made into a Snoke Kebab.

It explains why, when Snoke turned Ben, Ben remained loyal to Luke. Ben can’t actually learn anything from Snoke, he still needed Luke to grow more powerful.

It explains why Luke briefly considered killing Ben. Not out of fear. Out of compassion. To spare him the fate of living with Snoke forever. To save him from madness.

It explains why Pablo Hidalgo said there were no Sith in The Force Awakens. Neither Kylo nor Snoke is a Sith. Kylo is a sick man and Snoke is the demon on his back.

It's why Han ran away instead of fighting snoke to redeem his son, and why Luke did the same. To kill Snoke, they'd have to kill Ben.

There was only ever one person who could kill Snoke. Ben Solo. And that's exactly what he did as soon as he found someone he needed more. Rey. (it’s also a love story, btw)

Plus whenever they have one of these Bruce Willis ghost reveals, they like to put a really blatant easter egg in the first movie, and I think I know where it is in The Force Awakens.

Under Maz Kanata’s Canteena, after Rey has the lightsaber vision, when she’s talking to Maz, Maz says “Whoever you’re waiting for, they’re never coming back, but there’s someone who still could”.

Rey assumes she’s talking about Luke, but Rey suddenly hears a whisper saying something that sounds like “It’s Ben”. After which, they apparently also cut another flashback scene of Snoke talking to young Ben in the corridor at Cloud City where Luke fought Vader in Empire.

Snoke may have visited Ben in his Dreams, which is probably why Luke didn’t realize he existed until he probed Ben’s mind in his sleep. The only reason Snoke and young Ben would be at Cloud City together and nobody would know about it is if Snoke visited Ben in his dreams at first, probably showing him all the exploits of Darth Vader and the entire rise and fall of the Empire, so he’ll learn from past mistakes.

They never actually said he was super old, remember, the words they used were that he “Saw the rise and fall of the Empire”.

EDIT: I might add, this arc is made especially poignant by the fact that at least two Star Wars alums have suffered with serious mental illness.

Carrie Fisher spoke candidly, as always, about living with bipolar disorder and addiction. Jake Lloyd is a tale every Star Wars fan should know, because we basically ruined his life.

His performance as Anakin in The Phantom Menace was poorly received, and the bullying and taunting he received as a child was a disgrace. He never fully recovered, and after he was arrested in 2015, he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and transferred to a treatment facility.

As much as I’m still not a fan of this movie, THIS is an interesting theory. It could also be used to explain the Jedi that are willing to be struck down to become one with the force. (Obi-Wan, and Luke in particular). Perhaps they realize that the true power lies in the ability to exist ethereally, interacting with individuals through their minds.

It would explain why Obi-Wan said what he said to Vader about striking him down, and why Luke said something similar to Kylo. Maybe Luke realizes the only way to reach Kylo is through his mind. I’ll give this movie more credit if what this guy wrote turns out to be true, or at least close to the truth.

It could also open up endless possibilities in the next film. Maybe Snoke comes back, which is how it’s revealed to the audience, and he and Luke do have the battle that most were gearing up for; just in the ethereal realm. Again, interesting theory. We shall see.

Theory lost me with the 2nd sentence. Rian Johnson just didn't give a shit and had a story to tell. Previous plot points be damned.

I've been re-watching this at home and (to me) it plays a lot better at the house. Maybe because I was tired when I went to see it and nodded off in theater several times. lol
My 2nd and 3rd viewing really helped me appreciate the nuances of the movie, even the casino scenes.

Huge Star Wars fan, but this is the very first film that I have zero desire to see again in theaters. It was entertaining and there were some clap moments (like Luke dusting his shoulder off), but overall I have to say it was a letdown. Rey's Mary Sue-isms CONTINUE TO BE THE BIGGEST HINDRANCE to my enjoyment of the plot. So she's just going to be the most incredible and powerful Jedi of all time without an ounce of proper training? NOT AN OUNCE. Self taught force user after a handful of tips, capable of levitating an entire rock slide without any struggle. For goodness' sake, they showed Luke's X-Wing in the water, at least have a sequence with him teaching her to lift it, so that there is a payoff when she lifts the rocks at the end of the movie. Even worse is the fact that Rey wields lightsabers and goes toe to toe with anyone in the galaxy without ANY instruction. She doesn't even farm for kyber crystals and construct her own lightsaber. She just uses Luke's old lost one, which by the way they still NEVER explained how it got from Cloud City to Maz Kanata.

And while it was a nice sequence and a good use of Yoda's force ghost, NO the burn the old, prepare for the new way of the Jedi concept doesn't explain away everything I was just ranting about. It's plot hole filled lazy story writing. Oh, but wait, Rey took the Jedi texts with her, so I guess she is going to train herself, akin to Daniel LaRusso trying to teach himself Karate from a book. If in episode 9, it turns out that they have Luke's force ghost train her, that will again be short shrift, and lazy writing. What exactly can Luke's force ghost accomplish that Luke alive could not? Which brings me to my second largest issue with this film, the way they ended Luke's story. I get it and even bought the fact Luke wants to die, but to have him go out the way that he did seemed like it was at best; a cheap attempt to tug the heartstrings with the loss of one of our favorite characters, or at worst; a disrespectful out with the old, in with the new transition for the sake of moving the universe forward.

Yoda stated that Luke must teach Rey about failure, but how is he supposed to do that when he's 1. Dead, and 2. Rey has literally never failed at a single force related activity? And if they expect us to count her inability to turn Kylo as a failure, then that is again, lazy writing. Also, what was the deal with Snoke? We won't even get into his terrible CGI. But as a character, he's this uber-powerful Sith that we were never properly introduced to, or given a backstory on. He's just there, and then he's not. Despite his ability to literally toss Rey around the room with his index finger, and manipulate both Kylo and Rey's minds from across the galaxy. While I get that what happened to him was completely in line with the mythos, i.e. the rule of two and how the apprentice is secretly always looking to overthrow the master, particularly once they've identified their own apprentice (which Kylo thought he had in Rey); that moment was neither a surprise, nor did it seem earned by the plot that they'd given us to that point.

My third major gripe with the film is their handling of Finn's storyline. They've completely taken one of the brightest stars in TFA and shifted him to the C plot. And a meaningless C plot at that. He accomplishes NOTHING. He would have been more incremental to the storyline at this point, if they had let him finish the suicide mission, and that had bought time for the rebels to get away. I would have been very pissed that they killed him, but it would have made more sense than just having him bumble around like "Hey guys, I'm still a character in this thing, so I have to do something." It's to John Boyega's charisma, credit, and acting credentials that we are able to see any character development with the plot that they've given him. He could have been a part of the foundation for the continuing Jedi order, if they had just went with the force sensitive angle. Instead we get what amounts to a glorified extra, suddenly thrust into a lazy love triangle. Oh, and some random child laborer doing his best Turbo sweeps the sidewalk impression, as an insight into the potential future of the force.

Again this movie wasn't terrible, but it wasn't that great, especially with what came before it. I see a lot of people already gushing about how awesome this movie was, and those are some of the same people that berated JL up and down for what they considered to be plot holes, and the movie forcing you to connect too many dots from logic or your outside knowledge. TFA is guilty of the same thing to a comparable degree, and it didn't have an hour shaved off of it's runtime. I guess it really comes down to your fandom, with regards to how much movie malarkey you are willing to let slide. Again, I'm a fan, but this movie required us to fill in holes that shouldn't exist, and assumed moments and plot beats that it didn't earn. This just shouldn't happen to a franchise like Star Wars, NINE MOVIES into the universe.

Lastly, the comedy. I'm aware that Star Wars always has comedy, but it was too much in this film. It was approaching Thor Ragnarok levels of incompatibility. It was a Rogue One/ Empire Strikes back level story (good guys getting trounced more or less), with Return of the Jedi level comedy. I will eventually watch it again, and own it like all of the other SW films, but I found it to be a disappointment, overall.

Great breakdown and I pretty much cosign every point you made. I just want to add what makes this movie even more frustrating and annoying... especially regarding Reys "Mary Sue-ism", is unlike every other StarWars Film is this one takes place right after the events of the previous film. There isnt years in between like the other films. So Rey is still a complete force novice kicking all type of Force ass...smh .

They also spent alot of time with the Female general who stepped up after Lea and for what? She had nothing to do with the overall plot going forward. That was valuable time that could have been used to develop characters we are supposed to care about. Seems like her whole purpose as a character was to put Poe in his place.
came here to say all this movie was aight

40 minutes in and I’m thoroughly bored and the shit is far too jokey...I understand a well-placed joke here and there but every other line is on some try to be funny shit...shit kicked off w/ a mom joke? really??? I was so excited to see this movie too and thought cats was just being dickheads by being too critical...I’ll finish it but it feels like I’m forcing it

*edit*

I’m actually finish this flick another day...I’m getting the same disappointing feeling I got when I watched rogue one...coincidentally I rewatched that on fri. and still felt it was underwhelming...disney is cranking these shits out too fast and it’s showing...force awakens was dope tho after a slow start so I’m still holding out hope that the last jedi will follow suit

What I find so funny is that the criticism of this movie is such that they actually think there has been a perfect Star Wars movie. There hasn't been, each movie has some BS in it that sometimes distracts from the movies and sometimes doesn't but at the end of the day, its the overarching story that counts not scenes. As for whether Luke or any character would act a certain way, we have not seen Luke in at least 25 to 30 years in movie time - people change or at least have a crisis of confidence - get over it.

This had me :roflmao2:

This was the video that played next but was pretty good info on use of bathos

Is it possible that Luke Skywalker was already dead in Episode 8 and was a ghost since his school was destroyed?

Michael Fox, I am a Star Wars enthusiast and have vast knowledge about the SW universe.

Yes it’s entirely possible, I believe, that Luke actually crash landed his X-Wing on Ahch-To and died!

When Rey arrived on the island, she tried to persuade Luke to come along. He said no, not because he didn’t want to, but because he couldn’t.

Ach-Too is the birthplace of the Jedi and incredibly strong with the Force. Strong enough for Luke to maintain a “physical” Force presence after death.

The tree “temple” is the conductor of force energy on Ahch-To and Luke didn’t want to destroy it, because he didn’t want to move on. Listen to what Yoda tells him.

Yoda made the decision for Luke, and burned the tree. It was now only a matter of time before Luke became one with the Force, eternally, unable to maintain a physical manifestation.

After “Force Projecting” on to Krait, this expended whatever energy Luke had left, and he faded away, presumably to become a Force Ghost.

Notice when Luke fades, that his robotic hand does not stay behind. That’s because it was never there in the first place. It’s still in the cockpit of the x-wing, under the sea.

Interestingly, the shoot sees what looks like The Ghost next to the Millennium Falcon.
Star Wars fans will know The Ghost from the Star Wars Rebels TV show, set just before the original trilogy.
The ship was piloted by Hera Syndulla, among a band of Lothal rebels and made its live-action debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Perhaps this means we’ll be introduced to a live-action version of Hera herself?
Seeing The Ghost lining up to the Millennium Falcon with a host of other Rebel ships makes it hard not to think of Avengers Endgame’s final battle.
In the Marvel epic’s climactic scene Marvel superheroes from across the franchise came together for a huge charge against Thanos’ forces.

Considering The Rise of Skywalker is concluding the nine-episode spanning Skywalker saga, perhaps a similar battle with characters from across the franchise altogether is what’s planned.
The Last Jedi was particularly divisive among fans, and presumably, director JJ Abrams will play it safe, as he did with The Force Awakens, for the final outing.
No doubt there will be plenty of fan service, plus what he confirms are some answered questions.
In fact, the director teased a “satisfying” ending for The Rise of Skywalker in a recent interview.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams said: “This is about bringing this thing to a close in a way that is emotional and meaningful and also satisfying in terms of actually answering [as many] questions as possible.”
