‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’: What Luke’s New Look Reveals About His Destiny
There has been plenty of new information floating around the internet relating to
Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Disney has released the original teaser trailer and, more recently, a sizzle reel that has given us an inside look at the making of the movie with director Rian Johnson, as well as
a few teases of new things to come — Porgs!
Prominent YouTuber
Mike Zeroh puts out a ton of great
Star Wars content if you’re interested in inside information and spoilers for the upcoming movie. Zeroh pulls from inside sources as well as the website
Making Star Wars to keep fans updated on current rumors. We took a look at some of his recent videos and what they may reveal as we get closer to the release of
The Last Jedi. Spoilers ahead, you have been warned!
Luke’s wardrobe

We could read into Luke’s outfit all we want, and how black is traditionally worn by characters that use the dark side of the Force or are leaning toward the dark side — Darth Vader, the Emperor, Darth Maul, and Anakin Skywalker in
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith are great examples. Is Luke Skywalker leaning toward the dark side, or is he merely
embracing a larger view of the Force? It’s fun to speculate about it, for now.
Darth Vader references

Darth Vader appeared as a quasi-unspoken background character in
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Kylo Ren speaking to his melted helmet and dealing with the frustrations of trying to live up to his grandfather’s reputation as a brutal leader. According to Zeroh,
the references to Vader will be ramped up in
The Last Jedi.
In one example, Vice Admiral Holdo (played by Laura Dern) mocks General Leia for her relation to Vader and how it may have turned her own son against her. Later, Snoke and Ren will discuss Vader while Luke and Rey also have a conversation about the former Sith Lord. Although the character of Darth Vader won’t appear, we will get plenty of references to him and probably even see a few Vader artifacts, like with his helmet in
The Force Awakens.
Anakin will return

Even though we won’t see the return of Darth Vader, one thing we have learned is that Anakin Skywalker will return.
Zeroh explains that actor Hayden Christensen was rumored to have visited Pinewood Studios to record lines for the film about six months ago and that his character will make its first appearance in
Star Wars since being put inside the iconic black suit at the end of
Revenge of the Sith.
But here is the kicker: Apparently, Anakin will only appear as a voice, not in his physical form. Zeroh also mentions that
Obi-Wan Kenobi, long rumored to appear in
The Last Jedi, will also be merely a voice without a physical appearance. While somewhat disappointing, it’s understandable why Disney might lean this way. For Kenobi, having Ewan McGregor attempt to do an Alec Guinness impression makes little sense. Going the CGI route, as they did with Grand Moff Tarkin in
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, would also be a mistake.
As for Anakin, we aren’t exactly sure what the reasoning is behind not having him seen on screen. It could be Disney’s continued uneasiness with tying their new trilogy to anything relating to the prequels, or it could simply be that they were uncomfortable with Christensen’s on-screen acting — something that he was criticized for in his two previous movies.
Flashback sequences

Star Wars: The Last Jedi | Lucasfilm
Zeroh has learned that there will be flashback sequences, referred to as Forceback visions (like the one Rey experienced in
The Force Awakenswhen holding Anakin’s lightsaber). Rey experiences a vision where we will see her parents leaving her on Jakku, and later from her point of view as Kylo Ren murders the students at Luke’s Jedi Academy. Luke will also have a vision, where he sees moments from his past.
But the most interesting rumored vision is that of Ren, who will be in his own private quarters with the Vader helmet much like we saw in
The Force Awakens. This Forceback vision will relate to his father, Han Solo, who is not seen in any new footage but is heard speaking. We’ll get a young Ben Solo learning to fly the Millennium Falcon with his father, and later seeing the moment that he murdered Han on Starkiller Base. This vision supposedly is what will cause Kylo to destroy his helmet in a fit of rage.
More plot details
What could be going through Ren’s mind in this scene? | LucasFilm via YouTube
In a Yahoo! Movies Exclusive, new details are confirmed for the plot of
The Last Jedi. In the video,
Zeroh looks at a previously unseen imageof Rey standing on the island of Ahch-To holding a bow staff as well as the description given. It reads:
“Is it
really time for the Jedi to end? That’s the main question going into
Episode VIII as Rey meets a reluctant Luke; Kylo and Snoke plot revenge; Finn and Poe embark on new adventures … and we prepare to bid a teary farewell to Princess Leia.”
None of this is tremendously surprising. We could sense from the tone of the teaser trailer and interviews with Hamill that Luke Skywalker is not exactly thrilled to be getting involved with Rey, the Resistance, or any of this. What is especially interesting is the note about Leia, who was originally slated to survive the movie. The plans for the character have changed with the passing of iconic actress Carrie Fisher, and this gives us a little clue about how
Star Wars may have chosen to close out Leia’s storyline.
Luke Skywalker’s regrets
Luke Skywalker in
Star Wars: The Force Awakens | LucasFilm
What we know coming in about Luke is that his nephew (Kylo Ren) turned on him and murdered the rest of his Jedi pupils. Having a character turn to the dark side and wipe out the Jedi isn’t exactly a new storyline for
Star Wars, and Luke returning to the original Jedi temple sets us up for some possibly big new information. What does Luke see or learn on Ahch-To that makes him think that it’s time for the Jedi to end?
Zeroh’s speculation here is that Luke will have learned where the Jedi, as he knows of them from learning under Obi-Wan and Yoda, will have gone away from their original teachings — leading to arrogance, ignorance of the dark side of the Force, and ultimately their own failure. When he says that it’s time for the Jedi to end, there’s a great chance that Luke means the order of the Jedi as Yoda and Kenobi knew of it.
More on Benicio Del Toro’s character

Rian Johnson has kept information about Benicio Del Toro’s character, simply referred to as DJ, close to the vest.
But Zeroh has some new detailsthat he revealed in a recent video, and it gives us a little insight into what is happening with Finn in the movie as well. Apparently, DJ is being held prisoner in the casino city of Canto Bight. Finn and Kelly Marie Tran’s character Rose get themselves caught and imprisoned for the purposes of breaking DJ out.
Other information about DJ includes that the outfit he is seen wearing in many of the official photos was given to him by the Resistance, his ship is from before the time of the prequel trilogy, and it may or may not have been stolen. The fact that they have been so secretive about Del Toro’s character has led to a ton of speculation, but it appears that there may not be some massive, jaw-dropping reveal. He may just be a new character that has a lot to do with the plot of
The Last Jedi.
