Cowboys Giants are gonna be the determining factor. If they can't draw numbers Sunday, the NFL has a problem on its hands.

TV Ratings: NFL Kickoff Ticks Down for Second Year in a Row

Thursday's game between defending Super Bowl champion New England Pariots and the Kansas City Chiefs earned an overnight 14.6 rating among households.

As the broadcast networks prepare for the launch of the new season, NFL football's return on Thursday gave NBC an early jolt.

The NFL season opener, which saw the Kansas City Chiefs upset the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, earned an overnight 14.6 rating among households. That's down from the 16.5 rating for the comparable outing last year, when the Denver Broncos battled the Carolina Panthers in a Super Bowl L rematch. The 25 share for Thursday's game was also down from last year's 29 share.

According to NBC's total audience delivery metric, 22.2 million viewers, down from 2016's haul of 25.4 million viewers, but up from Sunday Night Football's average for the 2016 season (20.5 million). (While airing on Thursday, the NFL kickoff game is always presented as Sunday Night Football. Thursday Night Football premieres next week on CBS and NFL Network.)

This is the second year in a row the first NFL game of the season has brought diminishing returns. The 2015 opener brought in a 17.7 rating among households, 21.4 million viewers and 7.4 rating among adults 18-49, when Tom Brady made a triumphant return following the "Deflategate" scandal and his subsequent four-game suspension, which was thrown out before the opener.

More eyes have been on NFL in recent years as broadcast networks like NBC and CBS — which will continue to split Thursday Night Football games this season — look to live programs to help bolster ratings. Viewership for NFL games in the 2016 regular season was down an average of eight percent. However, Sunday Night Football still ranked as the No. 1 show of the 2016-17 broadcast season in the 18-49 demo, averaging a 6.7 rating. (Thursday Night Football on NBC and CBS ranked second and fourth for the season, respectively.)

As been pointed out several times in this thread...

Using Kodi or watching on TV if you're not one of the 5000 nielsens selected households is the same thing. The only way you can affect the ratings either way is if you are one of the homes they are surveying.

If you aren't one of the Nielsens homes, the only person that knows whether you watched or not it you.

So either don't watch on principal knowing you're not affecting ratings or find an actually effective way to protest.

Not disputing but... local stations dont capture metrics? How do they know what to charge for local ads?

Yup.

I worked for Nielsen like 10 years ago and there are only 2 ways they get their ratings. The first and oldest is basically survey's. They "randomly" select a home or 2 or 3 depending on the size, in every zip code in the country. They contact you via mail or phone to ask if you want to participate and if you do, they either send you a URL link, the oldschool "sweeps week book", and it's completely up to you to recall what you were watching at various times of the time frame they ask.

The newer way is they actually have technicians come to your home, open up the back of your TV sets to put in little wire sensors that detect when the TV is powered on, along with audio, and hook up connections that ride off of every other device you have connected to your TV...VCR/DVD/Game system/cable box etc. And then there is a box on top of the TV that has light buttons assigned to everyone in the home, and the people in the house press their corresponding button when they are watching/using the TV. It's a lot more invasive, but a lot more accurate and they normally kick out a little cash to the home for it. All that data for every TV in the home is sent down to their data center overnight and that's what gets reported as ratings. If you are one of these homes that have the monitoring equipment in them, YOU are very important with affecting the ratings. The rest of us? Not so much.

If you aren't one of the homes, we can still make our voices heard...it won't affect the ratings, but things like stop buying NFL merchandise, going to bars/lounges that broadcast the games, going to their websites (they count hits), and obviously not going to games will help make the point.

Yall can boycott, but I WILL be at the Bears vs Falcons game tomorrow. Havent seen Julio Jones play live in years. Also wanna see what my Bears will look like.

Whereas what Colin is going through is bs, not being employed and being attacked for not honoring some pussy ass flag/what White folks love, I still dont think dude is being genuine.

Btw......boycotting means also not looking at any games. I bet 95% of the people who are Team Colin will be looking at a few games over the next few weeks. If you plan to stand for something, dont half ass it w/ some bs impulse.. Also, make sure what youre doing is gonna bring about some REAL change. If Colin simply getting a job will shut you up, then your priorities are fucked.

I thought this was the boycott thread, not the the let's discuss the game thread.

@HNIC can I get my hat now...I just want to delete a few comments.

real talk...

it was a weird feeling

actively NOT watching

and the updates in the thread didn't help? :hmm:

but it did show me a LITTLE about addiction

and how it can be ANYTHING

cause I DEFINITELY felt it and felt left out the next day (the tradition, camaraderie etc)

and the reaction was very odd from friends and co workers when I told them I boycotted.

it wasn't easy (I aint comparing it to Selma or nothing!)

but avoiding pre game post game the ACTUAL game and internet updates?

Wow.

But I DID feel it and I could fully understand it being DIFFICULT for many

but I am glad I did it.

I don't know how LONG I will do this but I like knowing I can control myself and have the self discipline.

I'm in the same boat. It's a great challenge for sure.

NFL going to take a hit because people will be protesting on both sides. There are some players still taking knees, and there are white folks all over the Internet and sports talk saying they done. On the other side, people are saying fuck the NFL because of Kap being fucked over.

And best believe the NFL knows this is deeper than Neilson ratings.

Not watching this shit is easier than I thought. Browns second-string QB is fucking Hogan and Kap can't get a job? Then the browns breaking their backs to appease police, EMT, and firemen unions. When did the protests extend to EMT and firemen? How are they being disrespected? These cacs have truly gone batshit.

Man. Fuck the NFL.

Chiefs’ upset over Patriots was a fun NFL season opener, but TV ratings were still down

The first game of the 2017 season brought in 12 percent fewer viewers than last year’s.

The NFL season kicked off on Thursday with a stunning Chiefs win over the Patriots. But the TV audience for the 42-27 season opener was 12 percent smaller than last year’s, according toDeadline’s Dominic Patten.

The Patriots were heavily favored, and it was an entertaining upset. The game also aired on NBC, so it was more broadly available than Thursday night games that are only televised on NFL Network. But that didn’t improve ratings.

Last year’s season opener was a thriller, with the Broncos pulling off a close one, 21-20, over the Carolina Panthers in a Super Bowl 50 matchup. And the season openers for the 2015 and 2014 seasons both brought in larger audiences, too.

But while declining TV ratings for the NFL have been a topic of conversation for some time, the reasons aren’t entirely clear. Data from the latest J.D. Power Fan Experience Survey suggests people are tuning out because of the league’s handling of players who commit domestic violence, national anthem protests, game delays for penalties and reviews, and too many commercials.

Many viewers are canceling cable and satellite subscriptions, which changes the way these cord cutters watch games. Whether they stream games online legally — or illegally — or just follow the action on Twitter or their phones, the way viewers follow the NFL is constantly changing. There aren’t numbers readily available to track that.

The 2016 election cycle was a particularly contentious one, and constant coverage of it also pulled viewers away from NFL games. But the people who said they were watching fewer games for any of these reasons represented 3 percent or less of the total number of respondents for that survey.

Perhaps the biggest competition Chiefs-Patriots had on television Thursday was coverage of Hurricane Irma. Irma is expected to make landfall on the Florida coast as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of over 150 miles per hour. As Houston and the rest of the region impacted by Hurricane Harvey begin the recovery process, many viewers prioritized news about Irma over football, and understandably so.

This was the smallest audience for an NFL season opener since 2009, according to Sports Business Daily’s Austin Karp. Ratings will continue to be a concern for the NFL, and the league will keep trying to find ways to make the game more watchable.

Yeah coworkers do look at you weird. For years Fridays during football season I always wore something representing my team, but at the beginning of the season, they were talking about it and I simply said I'm not watching this year nor participating and someone said why so I said I'm boycotting. The only other black in the office said I'll join you and now I have two more that's white joining too. But one of the "bleached" Mexicans said it was pointless and wants to talk about it and they stop him every time.

So yes it's definitely difficult but I'll endure it for the long haul if necessary. Especially now that others have joined because of me.

As we were talking about it, one of the white coworkers said if you're somewhere where they play the anthem if you're not comfortable sitting just go to the restroom or somewhere to keep from being harassed until it's over. He said that's what he and his family has started doing.

well DAMN.

I do not know how to respond to that. Salute to them and a great idea.

yeah I noticed something that my elders used to tell me about during back in the civil rights era...

events like these EXPOSE a whole of people.

and most of the time its is a big surprise.

I have been very disappointed AND pleasantly surprised the past few months of Trump and Kaepernick.

Not disputing but... local stations dont capture metrics? How do they know what to charge for local ads?

Everyone uses Nielsen.

Which is why, if you are in the Nielsen survey, your boycott is detected.

If you are not, it will not affect the TV ratings at all. Not even a little bit.

well DAMN.

I do not know how to respond to that. Salute to them and a great idea.
Yeah I didn't either. But he said you'll always have some burly white boy trying to show out and that will be his reason to pick and because others will fear him they will agree with him or say nothing at all. He said it's not about standing your ground it's about saving your life in an outnumbered situation and it makes sense.

Shaun King Calls For Complete Boycott Of NFL Over Colin Kaepernick
September 8th, 2017

RTX2N9WS-e1476279945950.jpg

King provided people with four ways to protest the NFL until Kaepernick gets signed to a team: officially signing up to boycott the NFL, following TheNFLBoycott on Twitter, joining the Facebook community on the boycott and waiting for further instructions.

“So, I’m asking you to join me in boycotting the NFL this year. We will end our boycott when Colin Kaepernick is signed to an NFL roster. It’s that simple. Listen, we have power,” King wrote. “Our money has power. Our viewership has power. Our buying power can sway what companies do or don’t support. But we have to unify and make this power mean something.”

While playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick decided to kneel during the National Anthem to protest police brutality and the ways America oppresses black people. Kaepernick has struggled to get signed ever since then, with team owners wary of having him join their rosters.

“Colin Kaepernick is in the prime of his athletic life. He is in peak physical condition. He is a model citizen. He is a compassionate and generous soul. He was so well-liked by his teammates last season that they voted to give him the team’s highest honor for his performance on and off the field. He has set NFL records,” King said.

King explained that Kaepernick is still not signed because white team owners are upset that he continued to kneel, despite them telling him not to.

“These white team owners cannot believe that Colin took a stance against injustice in America without their expressed permission and blessing. And they particularly cannot believe that when they expressed their displeasure, that he continued to do it anyway — with players all over the league following his example,” King wrote. “That’s why they hate him. He is a quiet, peaceful man. To hate him says much more about you than it does about Colin.”

First bolded: I hate people taking that approach about the NFL. What's pointless about it? Best believe when all those white people call teams to say they aren't going to watch because they heard the teams were interested in Kap, shit worked. Players take a knee one week and are magically standing the next. Why? Because of the 'pointless' phone calls threatening to not watch or go to the game.

Second bolded: That's a smart way to handle the shit. A person's life can go to shit over this(quicker than Kap's career). Get into a fight with some drunk cac(s). Police find out what it's about and just keep you as long as they can before charging you. Catch a case. Legal fees. End up in front of some patriotic judge who wants to make an example of you(possible jail time). :smh: At football games, some of those fans been drinking since 8am. And cats in the stands protesting will definitely be in the minority.
