The army dude said that the playing of the national anthem should be reserved for showing appreciation to service members. That's not the exclusive meaning of the national anthem though. Obama should have corrected him on that.
Obama also should have said that while the army dude may not think it's "convenient" to express opinions that he doesn't like during the national anthem, it's also not "convenient" for many civilians to attend the funeral for their loved ones due to perceived minor infractions at best, or deadly racial profiling at worst.
Obama also could have said that the country was founded by people who disagreed with their government, and by people who wanted freedom of expression for everyone. So if army dude really is a patriot, then he should salute those who are free to express themselves when they make political statements in public arenas.

- not speaking up about police brutality
- not speaking up on the injustices of the judicial system
- the clusterfuck Obamacare and how the young were footing the bill for the old, and how there was no provision to cap the rates you currently have (mine was slated to more than double)
- the "redline" with Syria
- appearances and press conferences for the families of white victims (Sandy Hook, Dallas, Orlando, Boston, Aurora, etc) but nothing for families of black victims
- signing of the "Blue Alerts" bill that's like am Amber Alert for POs
- got a mouthful to say about the civil rights museum, not much to say about the black men shot and killed by the government in the same damn week

I always go back to my experience. My parents split in junior high, My mom, brother & I moved to San Leandro(lily white back then) from Oakland. So in junior high my 2 best friends were a Jewish kid & Mexican kid-We were all outsiders. The Jew kid was a fighter, so we squabbed as a crew.
So to this day when I see blanket statements about Mexicans & Jews, I cant roll with it. Simply because of experience. Those kids parents welcomed me into their homes, gave us rides, went to Raging Waters, went out to eat. And vice versa. I can call both to this day & get the shirt off their back. And I guarantee their worldview is shaped by having a Black friend from the hood in Oakland.
Now for instance my childhood best buddy since 4 yrs old was Mexican. He grew up a few doors down in a majority Black area in Oakland. And I protected him from bullying when we were kids. Nobody fucked with him after I whooped a few cats for fucking with him- Nobody is picking on my dawg who leaves his Millennium Falcon toy at my house playing Star Wars
